Final Fantasy: Discovery is an RGSS3 learning project aiming to mimic popular Final Fantasy series mechanics and blend them into a single game.

For decades, since the discovery of the Fire Crystal in Palamecia, the nation has been growing increasingly bold, looking to expand their territory and grip over Gaia. Of the five nations that make up the world of Gaia, only the Burmecian kingdom of Figaro has prepared themselves to challenge Palamecia, led by Emperor Vayne...

Fifty years after the Crystal's unearthing, a young girl, Ashe, emerges from where it once slept, claiming to have come from a gateway to other worlds similar to Gaia. She appears with a dire warning; the Crystals of Gaia and many other worlds are in danger. After a chance encounter with Lyra, the Princess of Tycoon, Ashe sets out with her to stabilize Gaia's Crystal of Fire...

A former Palamecian engineer and airship pilot, exiled from his home after an incident in the past, embarks on a mission to infiltrate Palamecia and observe, and if possible, steal the Fire Crystal from Palamecia. What he finds there launches him to join the bigger fight against the Empire...

A stalwart Dragoon, Reeve, from the Burmecian seat of power in Figaro, leaves the kingdom to work alongside Mysidian twins, Wedge and Vicks, on various assignments from the Elder of Mysidia. He hopes to reclaim the honor that the Burmecian Dragoons once held long ago, when his father was a Dragoon under the previous king...

In Figaro, the king's personal bodyguard, Beclem, finds a young female Caller on death's door after a long journey from Aquaria, and takes her under his care. The girl, Ellie, reveals that the Esperkind her people communicate with also feel that many worlds are in danger of utter collapse. They will need to unite the humans and Esperkind once again, as it was in the distant past, to overcome the battles ahead...

Across the mountains, in the Sanubian deserts where the famous Gold Saucer rises from the earth, the leader of a secret spy organization finds information important to Figaro's mission. The time for her to choose a side has come, and Parker, of the Gold Saucer Syndicate, always picks the winning side...

Far to the south, in Ivalice, a civil war is brewing between various political figures, coinciding with the relentless defense of the borders against demons emanating endlessly from a civilization long since destroyed. A young Lionguard trainee, Leon, is tasked with ending Ivalice's plight, allowing the once mighty nation to stand up against Palamecian advances...

In the Bisga Greenlands, home to chocobos, moogles, and people of all kinds, a reclusive hunter watches in horror as the Palamecian war machine marches on her lands. The hunter, Priscilla, vows to put an end to their destruction of Gaia's natural resources...

Deep undercover in Palamecia's military ranks, a rebel soldier who's been fighting the Palamecian Empire almost his entire life is about to bring his organization into the light, for the sake of defeating them. With his custom firearms in hand, Kelger joins the fray...

Final Fantasy Discovery is very much about bringing it all together, both in terms of mechanics and the game's story. I hope you enjoy it.

Just wanted to pop by and see how the state of the project was coming along. Is there anything you're working on that you're particularly excited about.

Well, we're in the middle of changing up how the player will travel from place to place, that's got us pretty excited. Hopefully, we can show that off pretty soon. I'm also personally trying to correct some long-standing bugs within the battle system that will make things way more fun once I can actually include them again. I'll talk more about that when I have something to talk about there.

I think he might be excited about Gold Saucer TBH.

Oh yes. The Gold Saucer has me excited.

I've been experimenting with improving battle visuals. More on that when I've completed enough resources for actual testing.

And yes... I concur. The Gold Saucer is going to be pretty freaking sweet. Oh, and Limit Break cut ins... I've decided to make some. :)

You made me one happy moogle, kupo! ^o^
<<Finally... out of curiosity (maybe), if there was ONE Final Fantasy franchise character you could choose to be a playable guest... who would it be? (Again... this is just out of uh... curiosity...) >>

Hmmmm i would vote for Sephiroth. SOMEHOW in the game u can summon him accidentally and fight him as one tough son of a... BOSS ^^ then if u can defed him he will join as guest for some Quest or something like that use ur imagination :P !

I hate to disappoint you, but I can't say no to this enough. I'm not ruling out being able to fight Sephiroth in the game at some point (I would love to include a lot of familiar bosses in some way, as long as we can KIND OF have it make some sense) but there's no chance of him being playable ever.
What about any of the girls from Final Fantasy 13 Lighting or Lumina Fang or Vanille.

What the PHUMPH. YES. I'm all up-ons this.

Subscribed, downloaded, pretty much...

The fact that a game such as this can be on RMN for over two years and have this much buzz without me even being aware of it till now really makes me wonder if RMN is working as intended.
And reading comments like that makes me want to get this next release out so badly. It's so wildly different (and better) than the last RSW release. =)

Okay I played a little bit of this (RSW Release). A very little bit, but I'm really digging it so far. Aesthetically everything (graphics, sound, music, general design choices) has a 'just right' Final Fantasy feel that's "cooked to perfection", but mechanics wise I've barely dipped my toes in. Well, actually, if I'm gonna nitpick, one thing felt very wrong in the early game--that Cid had steal and Locke did not.

It was a bit "mean" how you had Cloud, Squall, and Locke all die to friendly fire during the intro but I'm going to assume that was done "for the gigs" so to speak; still, harsh way to treat a "celebrity cameo" : P

I guess my question for fun would be...what are the STATS/Character Attributes in Final Fantasy games? Do they vary from game to game? The attributes here look a bit more like the VX Ace defaults rather than stats I've seen in Final Fantasy games. Was that an intentional decision?

Final thought, I really love that you left the project open. That is very classy, and locking it when is itself so dependent on borrowed and stolen stuff would have been markedly non-classy so, good on ya.

Totally gonna play more of this beaut later on. Generally speaking I try not to pay attention to wildly popular projects like this one to maintain my reputation as an iconoclast, but this bandwagon is full of delicious candy and I can't not jump on.
I should note that the project's older releases are open, but not everything in those releases is allowed to be used. Anything Paul or I didn't make or code, sure. If you have any questions as to what's public and what isn't, I'm a PM away! :D

Future releases are likely going to be encrypted as much as possible, because the amount of original stuff has increased so much. Still, during development I've been compiling archives of the public stuff to release separately.

Locke, Cloud, and Squall aren't the actual Locke, Cloud and Squall, either. They're code names, much like Cid's code name, Pulse (in fact, my original version had the names in quotes to signify that but it was removed later). Having their art resemble their inspired namesakes was a decision Paul made while designing their artwork.

Character stats, in the RSW release, I think were based on a mash-up of FFVI and FFVII models. It's a little different today, and relies more on FFVI, if I'm not mistaken. Damage formulae and stats are definitely NOT default.

Rather than a PM, I think a list of which resources are rips that are free to use and which are original would make a great blog post.

mad props

Character stats, in the RSW release, I think were based on a mash-up of FFVI and FFVII models. It's a little different today, and relies more on FFVI, if I'm not mistaken. Damage formulae and stats are definitely NOT default.

Well in FFVI you've got 9 listed stats, Strength, Speed, Stamina, Magic, Attack, Defense, Evasion, Magic Defense, and Magic Evasion. And then in FFVII you've got a buttload more.

In FFD (RSW release) we have 6 listed: Atk, Def, Mag, M. Def, Spd, and Sta. Which seem to correspond more to the default VX Ace stats of Attack, Defense, Magic, Magic Defense, Agility and I'm guessing that Stamina is a re-purposing of the rather bewilderingly useless Luck stat.

But anyway I'm just curious because I have always found the way stats are handled in Final Fantasy games interesting and quite opaque/mysterious. (I certainly don't doubt that battle formula have been heavily customized.)
Two reasons why making that blog post would be a moot point.

First, there's nothing in the game that just says, "Hey, this release isn't encrypted so go ahead and steal everything." If people aren't being courteous enough to ask, then I wouldn't want them even taking the ripped stuff, at that point. That's bush league behavior, if you ask me. There's always been an unspoken implication in the RM community that, "hey, don't just take everything from a game you downloaded." Rips have always been the exception to that.

I left everything open because it'd be hypocritical for me to have started the project to learn more about using the program, and then lock everything up that was produced as a result of that search for knowledge, which would not have been possible had other creators out there not made their work public. I hope people look at these old releases and learn more about how I made things work the way they do. In some cases, it really wasn't easy. That, of course, doesn't mean it's open season on the project's files. That's a whole different circumstance that I think a lot of people misunderstand. In fact, the lack of a coherent credits list in the old releases has made me consider removing the download altogether (our new versions have in-game credits within the Datalog menu, accessible at any time. There's also the credits listing here on the gamepage itself). That's something I may still do, out of respect for the resources made by other people.

Second point, the current download is extremely outdated at this point in time. The amount of original stuff sitting in the game that only Paul and I have access to now is a lot bigger, and those will absolutely be encrypted as much as possible when they get released, removing any need I might have to say what's OK and what isn't, when that time comes.

The archives I'm putting together consist of resources that are used in the game, and aren't original stuff made by us or other artists. Basically, it's anything that's a rip from an FF game that's used in FFD. Nothing else. Including other files made by other people would potentially violate their terms of distribution. For those files, I'd assume the creators would want them downloaded the same way I downloaded them: by finding them on my own and downloading them where the creators wanted them to be downloaded from (for me, I consider RMN the home of FFD and won't distribute it elsewhere, for example).

So, I guess the simple version would be, if someone wants to use something from a game, and they're not 100% certain it's a rip, ask the creator and credit accordingly. RMN has this covered as part of their rules, actually.

Here's a quick list of some (not all) things that would bother me if I saw another person using them without asking, though, just to be clear:

- Paul's artwork. The biggest of big no-no's. Most people may not know this, but I actually paid for most of it before Paul became a developer on this project, so this is something neither he or I would ever agree to someone else using.

- Action poses written inside VE - Animated Battle, that I came up with and had to test over and over to make sure they were timed and animated properly (seriously, my testing map has a special place in my nightmares). Copying that stuff would not be OK.

- Battle animations. I mean the actual files (that I made) and the in-game animations. A lot of them took a ton of work to get right in an animated battle setting.

- ANY script stuff that I wrote, that wasn't publicly released on my Pastebin. There's one exception here, anything I wrote and added into a script as a bugfix (I THINK I marked them), feel free to utilize those fixes. Who wants bugs, right?

- The FF styled Windowskins used in the game. They are modeled after FF window skins, but they are not rips. I had to make them myself (this holds true in the case of the FF13 style one, especially, which was created from scratch by staring at screenshots of FF13 windows and is now the ONLY windowskin used in FFD). This is one resource we shouldn't be seeing in anyone else's projects.

Now, with all of that said, let me know if you need any assistance with your new project with jin. :D

As William pointed out above, he and I are of like mind concerning these matters.

This is why I watermark most of the art that I show even though its not particularly great. Our project has ballooned in size in the last year and will continue to do so at a frightening pace. By the time of its eventual completion, over 75-85% of the game is going to be all original content created/commissioned by William and I.

It's good that we get this all out of the way right now. I also want to reiterate one more thing that William said: Final Fantasy Discovery will never be distributed anywhere outside of RMN.

I implemented splash screens prior to the title screen stating this, and some other useful information. If anyone ever sees this project being hosted elsewhere, let us know, eh?

There's always been an unspoken implication in the RM community that, "hey, don't just take everything from a game you downloaded."

Believe me young man, the RM community's been around and I've been around in the RM community since long before even that unspoken implication existed. : )

Kids were filling their pockets with the contents of other kids' project folders over ten years before Final Fantasy Discovery would exist.

And generally speaking when I see someone leave a project unlocked, my assumption is they have rips in there they didn't make and they're just bein' a cool guy and not an asshole. So I'm glad we had this discussion and it's here for everyone to see, at least. (Some people are just going to be assholes anyway, and not even encrypting your project will prevent that--that's a fact of life. Determined assholes are everywhere.)

Anyway, I can totally dig what you're saying. (Generally speaking I'm just a habitual hoarder of stuff I never use in anything anyway. I think Jin69 said he was trying to go 100% custom graphics with the FF7 Demake, which sounds insane, but who knows, anything's possible. I'm honestly not that plugged in to the FF7 Demake, at least not yet.) But it is cool to see an explicit list of stuff that's off limits at this stage in the game. You're some cool dudes.
im sorry to bother banyone but where can i download this game they seem to have removed it ffrom hjere
I think they removed it since it was REALLY out dated.

As macblo pointed out, part of the reason the demo was removed was because of how outdated it was. The other reason probably has to do with what William said earlier about how the original releases lacked a coherent in-game credits list. We DO have a credits page here but we'd much prefer to have in game credits (which future versions will have via our datalog menu).

If you can be patient for a bit longer, we're actually working on a new build that should be out "relatively soon"! It's going to be preeetttyy raaadddd. ;)
