Macalania Woods/Phantom Forest

Been trying my hand personally at doing some parallax mapping, and here's a very, VERY early screenshot of the Macalania Woods, also known around Gaia as the Phantom Forest, which lies east of Figaro and is home to the eccentric Seer, Matoya.

I haven't gotten into doing shadows or any of that stuff yet, I'm still working out the pathways the player can take through the area. But, I figured now would be a good time to ask for some feedback on it?

This is just an early screen shot? That forest looks amazing! I think it looks really cool.
After a location named Phantom Forest/Macalania Woods, I wouldn't expect so much greenery in here. I think the bluish green trees would do nicely enough to set mood here. Also, those RMVX/Ace tiles are too vivid when put on that FFIV:TCC grass tiles.

As I said, I didn't get into shadows, or lighting, or any of that yet. But just to clarify, the deeper you go into the forest, the more... depressing it becomes. You'll see.

What I'm looking for is feedback on how it's laid out here. Like, are the trees too bunched together? Should there be more variety in the trees (I can look for more graphics and add it or rearrange what's there). Is it fine as is? I'll post a more complete shot when I have more work done on it, of course.

Did you make those tiles?

Negative. The ground tiles are ripped from FFIV:CC for PSP and all the trees and stuff are either RTP or Celianna's work.
Jesus, even without the shadows or the pathways in place this still looks great. I don’t think you’ll have to worry about me not liking it.

Ooooo…sounds spine-tingly-ding!

Just a small update here. Still haven't done much on the pathways, with different ground stuff, but the environment is coming together. Also added a tint overlay to make it a bit spookier. There's some pretty cool stuff in this area, including a few bosses. ^_-
Nice job, Couillie! I hope to see some kind of fog or 'Mist' in this forest.

I wonder if this rabbit has some mystery behind it, like he's a monster in disguise. ;P

Looks nice! That rabbit looks rather...odd or is it just me?

Nothing special about it. There's a bunch of wildlife roaming around the woods.
Looks like a certain fluffy someone forgot to say "Fizzy Pickle."

Here's another, without the tint. Started to work on the ground a bit, adding darker, rotting grass near the trees that are dying in the forest. I'll give it some more green tones as well as I make my way through.

How is it coming out? I'd love to know what's good about it, and what's not so good. As I said, it's my first attempt at a parallax map.
It's lovely. Actually makes me think about how in Final Fantasy X-2 Macarena Woods were dying (although it wasn't show as pretty as here mind you ;) ).

Still, you have a mapping error: there's a rock sitting atop a tree in the right hand corner of the screenshot. It actually looks like it is also sitting on grass too.
The forests are beautiful. Im a sucker for forests. :)

Oh, that's because the trees upper layer isn't applied yet. Gotta finish the map before I can do that. Once it's all mapped I'll separate the tree trunks from the tree leaves, and all the ground objects will rest where they should.

Side note: I was going to add a Mission Mark to this area, but I ended up changing it to a mini-boss instead, to give the player a little more story on the area. Paul and I discussed this area at length before I started making it, so it's rich with plot stuff.
Hm, will there any any FFVI/FFX/-2 enemies/bosses here? Since it's known as both Phantom Forest and Macalania Woods.

Oversoul (VI) as a mini-boss, Spherimorph (X) as a boss, and a third which I haven't done yet.

Got more done in the southern part of the woods. I'd say it's about 30% done now, with the entire left side mapped. ^_^
Very well, Couillie. Congrats. I don't have enough patience for parallax mapping.

The end result is so worth it. Even a half-crappy parallax map (like mine) look way better than the blocky messes that Ace wants us to make.

Effects aren't all in place in this shot, but I've started to do some of the event stuff here. :D
