Active Time Battle & Crisis Mode

Alrighty, so I've set up the ATB system now and took a video here to demonstrate it.

Here, the party faces off against Death Gaze. All party members are around level 40 with the appropriate equipment.

The one thing to note is Crisis Mode. Basically, when certain bosses (not all of them have it) are reduced to near-fatal HP, their battle pattern changes entirely. They can also act twice per turn. You'll see that Death Gaze gets VERY nasty when he enters Crisis Mode (represented by the red blinking effect on him).

He actually wiped out the party so fast that he didn't have a chance to use some of his other Crisis Mode attacks (Flare and Haunting Gaze, which inflicts Zombie and Disease on a single enemy).

Now, being that I created this, I could have easily set up the proper equipment to avoid such a fate, but I figured I should represent the video the way the average player might, so I let him beat me up a little bit. =P

Anyway, let me know what you think as always!

Oh, forgot to note: Crisis Mode does not last forever. It's a short burst for the boss to make a comeback and make the player think harder about their actions. It lasts for about three turns or so, and then fades out.
I'd improve the ATB speed, if I were you: the battle was unnecesarilly extended in time.
This battle looks fun:) And the Crisis Mode is a very nice touch because bosses should always be harder when their health is near fatal. The intense music also helps the player realize what their up against and makes their strategy better. After watching the video, I realized how great of a system this is. Great Job!

However, I do agree that the ATB could be a bit faster. For LV.40 characters, it is a little slow. In example, think of how fast the ATB bars raised in FF7 as you gained more levels and speed.

It may seem slower since time stops while browsing menus. In a full active time setting where actions happen while menus are open, it speeds up a lot. Also, party members gain bonuses to Speed from leveling up with Nethicite that grants that bonus (Ifrit and Fenrir, if I remember correctly). Characters did not have any level-up bonuses in this test, and because of that, Death Gaze had about 30 more speed than the party members.

The speed of the ATB is dependent on the Speed of the battlers involved, to a certain degree. Of course, I could have used Hastega with Vicks to speed things along and compensate for the lack of Nethicite bonuses... no biggie.

Oh, and before I forget, since this system was added, some changes have been made to some things...

Jump/Dive no longer has a cooldown. Since it takes a little time for Reeve to execute the commands, there's no reason to have any extended wait for him to use it again. His Passive Ability which formerly nullified the cooldown for Jump/Dive now bestows Bravery and Haste.

Dude, if anything, the ATB bar was really fast, the only thing that slowed the process was the awesome command selection.

I also had a setting on where animations playing also stopped time. Forgot to take it off. But at normal speeds, I didn't feel it was too fast or too slow. Of course, play testing with a bigger group will give me a better idea of how to set it. That'll come later.
Holy shit. That battle menu! :O That looked gorgeous.. hell, the whole battle looked really good ^_^ Oh! and yes, I also think the ATB could do with being a little bit faster, though if SPD bonuses come from Nethecite levelling and your party didn't have though, that could explain the slow ATB gauge building.

Are you going to be releasing that battle command selection script? I mean, that was pure awesome. (more like how did you manage that)

edit:
is crisis mode somewhat similar to Oversoul from Final Fantasy X-2?
Oversoul added new abilities to an existing pattern. Crisis Mode (not sure why I named it that, other than calling the state they enter "Crisis" instead of "Near-Fatal") replaces their old commands completely.

The set up for selecting commands is default to the ATB script (besides single-column skill menu, that was a one-line script change).
Also, here's another quick one showing the difference in speed once I changed some of those settings I had forgotten about before. When your characters Speed stats are closer to that of the enemy, it goes a bit quicker.

Now that's more like it indeed! Looking great, as always, thanks WC :)
Couillie, if it would be possible to add some kind of SE to notify the player that a character's ATB gauge is filled up and ready to act, then please do that. I'm used to having a signal of a character ready to strike, but that might be just me.

Though if you do, make sure it isn't annoying, I personally don't like the "RING!" "RING!" "RING!". Or just give the option to disable! :>
edit:
Final Fantasy Discovery
RMN's Final Fantasy!
I'm sure that's not a hard thing to do, but I think a sound already plays when the command window opens. Lemme check.

No sound by default, but I can play with that and add something.

Holy crap, I got chills when I heard that music! That's not Blackmages is it? If I remember correctly they did this song. Their version is good, but this is godly!

The battle itself seemed great! I have all my fingers and toes crossed in the hopes that this game goes without a hitch!
Live House SSH did this track, if I'm remembering right.
God I hate that remake of the song. xD I have lots of bad memories. Back when I was a total noob (Which didn't change much boo) I used this for one of my retarded projects. I heard this song so many times I started to hate it.

Not sure how anyone can grow tired of such an awesome, awesome remix. I've had to listen to it 1,000 times while testing things and I still get blown away by how good it is.

I have no idea, I guess it's because the project was so terrible, too.
