For now, we're using a lower resolution map that you can see on the right. We'll update it in-game with a prettier one, once it's finished and finalized. We may also opt to use our own original icons for locations, instead of these, which came from FFT:A.

Lovin' your use of different font colors.
Kind of reminds me of travel in Shadow Hearts Covenant or FFX.
Question. If this is how the overworld map is gonna be. Does that mean that the onset of the game is gonna have a much more linear progression? Also, are there gonna be areas hidden on the map that you can unlock like in FFX?

Upon reaching the World Map before, players were able to visit a few different locations before progressing with the Mysidia plot stuff. That's still the same.

But yes, there is no longer a world map. Players will progress through different areas connecting major points, or use the travel menu here to move quickly between areas (once you have access to it, which happens around the end of your initial visit to Figaro Castle).

There will be unlockable locations, of course. How they're unlocked varies (no, you won't be inputting coordinates like in FFX).
If there are enough unlockable areas and stuff, it will feel the same. Well... sorta...

My favourite traveling interface is, for now, the one from RomancingSaGa 8D. Talking to people to know what happens at a place unlocks a path, and often you have several paths to choose to accomplish something. You just end up talk with every NPC hoping they unlock the place you need to go, but it's fine.

I'm also a fan of the Romancing SaGa travel system (and all of the games too, hehe). Like William said, the method of location unlocking will vary, but it certainly isn't outside of the realm of possibility for the old grizzled hunter sitting in the back of the bar of Town X to mumble something about a hidden path located behind the tree situated in the corner of dungeon so and so of the etc etc. ;)
Talking to the right NPCs, completing the right Missions, defeating the right players in Triple Triad, winning certain optional boss battles, etc.

These are all things we can use to unlock new locations for players.
If I beat Ultros will I get access to a place with "pretty, little girls" and no "muscle-heads"? ;P
Sounds good to me. It'll be interesting to see. It definitely shows a change of pace from the traditional over world map design.
Updated to its final version.

EDIT: Updated to fit the new menu interface.
