Sacred Reviews: Spongebob 2K3

Introduction

SpongeBob 2k3 was an entry in the bad adaption contest celebrating RPGMaker.net's 5th anniversary. As you can expect from the title you play as everyone's favorite sponge in a game that is barely interactive. In fact, the total amount of seconds you spend controlling SpongeBob can probably be counted utilizing your fingers and toes. Though the first question should be what is the story of this short three minute game.

Story

Well the short of it is this game doesn't really have a story. About the only thing that does happen is that you witness SpongeBob walk to work and get a few burger patties out of the freezer. Outside of that the game tells a few jokes that range from references to internet memes to Patrick wearing a bikini. And while the attempts at comedy are appreciated. Almost all of them fall flat and only a couple of them feel like something you'd see in the show.

Gameplay

The only time you actually have any control in this game is when you are getting the burger patties out of the freezer and even that isn't particularly difficult since it's a simple sliding puzzle. And in the developer's hurry he or she didn't mark the walls correctly so you can simply climb up them in the freezer in order to get to the area containing the burger patties. So you aren't even obligated to solve the puzzle correctly.

Graphics

Considering how rushed the rest of the game feels the attention to detail that was put into the custom graphics was a real surprise. The game definitely captures the visual appearance of the show with remarkable accuracy for a game crafted in less then five hours. And is the only aspect of the game that is a real treat for the player.

Sound

The music is all rather generic filler lifted from the RTP, but considering the time constraints this project was under that isn't a major surprise.

Conclusion

SpongeBob 2k3 is ultimately a failed little comedy game and maybe that was meant to be the joke. After all SpongeBob is a comedy series to some extent and as such a bad adaption should feature jokes that just don't hit the mark. On the other hand the failed attempts at comedy only push me away from this game and make me want to shut if off after the first couple of minutes. Thankfully for this title it is only a couple of minutes long. With that being said I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone.
