Yoshi’s Archipelago is the result of a community effort to collaborate and somehow make a solid Mario game. It's the sixth entry of the long-running Super RMN Bros. series, and the bar was raised higher than ever before. Months of testing and revising have paid off; it stands as one of the best!

This game uses its own version of Super Mario Bros. X (SMBX). It runs in v.1.3.0.1 and replaces several default assets. Once you download and extract it, open the program, click ‘Start Game’, and you’re ready to play!

The Plot
The Mario Bros. are on vacation with Peach in Yoshi's Archipelago, a group of exotic islands far from the Mushroom Kingdom. Of course, wherever they go, trouble soon follows. Bowser and his minions crash the party and kidnap the princess! The mission is clear, but something seems off about Bowser…whatever it is, there's work to do! Mario and Luigi hop to it with the help of Peach's bodyguard, Agent Toad!

So Many Islands
Yoshi’s Archipelago boasts a wide range of locales. From the lush plains of Green Grass Island to the frozen wastes of Slip Drip, all manner of alliterative areas await you! With 90 stages spread across 10 different islands, there's just tons to see!

Yoshis Everywhere!
As one may expect, the archipelago is home to many types of Yoshi. In fact, each island has its own local color! On top of a strong showing of everyone’s favorite dinosaur, this game is designed with Yoshi in mind. Levels are ride-friendly, and you'll never be forced to ditch your dino pal. You may have to dismount to climb a vine secret or two, but Yoshi will wait patiently for your return. Even bosses can be fought on green-horseback! Ride your rainbow of steeds to victory!

Flower Mode
Like its namesake, each stage contains five flowers (but almost no red coins, so don't worry). Gather all five and a star will appear at the end of the level. Stars can unlock bonus items, extra stages, and entire new islands! Although midpoints can’t save flowers, you can activate Flower Mode to gain additional power-ups for the hunt. There are 100 stars and more than 450 flowers, so there’s plenty to find and many rewards to be had! Even Lakitu’s shoe is an accessible prize!

Unlockable Characters
Only Mario and Luigi are available at first, but more characters can be unlocked as you progress. Peach may be kidnapped, but if you can save her from Bowser, she'll join you on the quest! Her hover ability and higher health give her an edge with flower gathering. With her help, you can discover all the archipelago’s secrets! Including other new allies...

Newbies and Veterans Welcome
This game offers something for all players. Newcomers will find the tutorial stage informative, while veterans will be happy they can skip it. Flowers and stars aren’t needed to complete the main quest, but there are challenges waiting for those who seek them. Each stage already contains what you need to find the flowers, but bonus items can make the search much easier. And for those who really want to go all-out, try the All Five All Five Challenge: get all five flowers as all five characters in every level. Some are much harder than others!

Two-Player Compatibility
If you have a local friend to play with, this game fully supports two-player mode. The only thing better than a grand adventure is having someone to share it with! Work together and conquer in co-op!

Played with a friend. It's a solid game but kinda bland. None of the levels took any chances or did anything interesting. It was just run and jump standard fare. Granted we didn't get far. The Ghost house on the second world got us stumped and I gave up playing. It seemed like we explored everywhere available but there was nowhere left to go.

Maybe there's better levels later but meh.

Sorry if we played it too safe for your tastes. The ghost house's gimmick is that the invisible stuff becomes solid, so the route you need to take is revealed after you hit the switch.
I don't recall any switch, but maybe my friend hit it and I didn't realize. Next time I'll probably just load random levels in the editor heh It's a nice world map but it's a bit tedious having to get all the flowers in order to get stars, in levels that aren't engaging to me.

The stars are optional; you don't need them to progress. I don't know what more you're looking for, but maybe this sort of thing just doesn't appeal to you anymore.

if this game had been released 5 years ago it would've been a different story, but alas, peoples' tastes change

at this point we are making these SMBX games for our own enjoyment

link2112, can you try fire temple redux?
The stars unlock things, so while maybe not required to see all the levels, as gamers we needed to collect them to find out what's in that pipe that requires 10 stars. Ya know? And in order to do that we spent more time than I would have preferred wandering around a few levels.

There is a probably bit of smbx fatigue, although it's been months since I played any. But in all the previous RMNx games they seemed to be full of levels with wacky ideas. The mega man levels, the classic art themed level with the squares, kentona's level with a giant thing chasing you. My fucking off of the wall level ideas haha That is what has always appealed to me since the beginning of the smbx era. Something new and interesting.

But, I might be rushing to judgement here. We only played about a dozen levels? How many is there in total?

If you showed this to someone who never played any smbx games and likes Mario, it would rock their socks off. It's well crafted and well balanced, kudos, but I've always had different tastes. I wouldn't worry too much about what I think, I just wanted to share my thoughts.

Deckiller, sure thing. Ask and ye shall receive.

Are there any levels that have unique concepts beyond basic running and jumping? Any standouts that might appeal to my tastes?

Oh, does anybody have a save file with the entire game unlocked? That might be a good idea, so we can skip levels that don't appeal or hold us up because we can't fucking beat them. I've always hated ghost houses haha.

And one thing I'm remembering, in that underwater level where the sea of ghosts phase in and out. I felt like the change happened too quickly, and there wasn't enough space between the ghosts. That section was fucking hell to get through. There was a period of like a full minute where we didn't make any progress at all. We were just struggling to stay alive and keep our yoshis. It's a good concept but was too constricting.
I made the phasing sea of ghosts level. (and also the " kentona's level with a giant thing chasing you." in the previous SRB). I am glad I made an impression.

Honestly, I can relate. One of my favorite things about the RMN Bros. series is just the sheer creativity; seeing stage designs and level types that would never happen in any ordinary Mario game. But with all the flak the series got...well...

This game was something of an eventuality. Around the time when the drama hit its peak, there were those who swore up and down that the only way to make a "good" Mario game was to do it "right," ie, the way we did it this time. When I ran the first RMN World, I designed it specifically to counter that notion. I wanted to prove that the approach had merit and that a good game could be borne of the chaos the event generated. And I was right, dammit!

But having shown that our series could handle the beast and create something off-the-wall AND successful, I felt it was time to show we could also play by the rules. This game was made with the fundamentals in mind, and everything about its direction aims to emulate the things that make canon Mario great. I think we pulled it off, but in this regard, its strength is also its weakness. It lacks the innovative qualities of its predecessors.

That said, Link, if you really can't stomach the game's intended progression, I suggest you have a look at our Stage List page. I think the bonus content would suit your fancy better, and you can use that to pick out the levels that might interest you. Worlds 8, 9, and B are all fair game. I also think the boss stages are less the norm, as well as the thematic bonus stages, so those would be all #-6 and #-X levels. I'd also give a shout-out to Green Thumb, Carps Against Humanity, and most anything by Illy. It's not that the other stages are bad, per se, but perhaps less flavorful.

There are 90 normal stages in all. With 75 stars, you can see just about everything, and boss stages are worth an extra star apiece. I structured it this way so the extra content is the reward for amassing stars, but I can't tell you how to have fun. ;P
I'm downloading this project now. Something tells me I might be doing a let's play and a review of this entry. Haven't read too much on here, so I'm going in blind.

I would have more makerscore If I did things.

Alright, I've made it to Island 8 and gotten every star on the way

Some levels it was a breeze, some levels made me think a bit (Mirage manor) while some were just fucking tedious(Bonestrewn Barrow)

And comparing my levels to some of the ones I thoroughly enjoyed (Like Rock 'N Roll Ridge) made half of my levels feel like garbage (Bonestrewn Barrow)
I've done it! Completed the game, got all 100 stars & discovered the 'extra stuff'. I'm uploading the 1st video as of now & hopefully be able to upload at least half of them or more (10 Parts) today.

I just have 3 questions Hali:
1 - What made you change the last boss?
2 - What made you change {REDACTED}?
3 - Will there be another RMN Bros/World game in the future or is this the finale to the series?

2 - What made you change {REDACTED}?
Spoilers man! Geez, can't you see the sprite up above was blacked out? Now I don't even want to fucking play this thing.

;)
Sorry about that. Forgot to put spoiler tags (and forgot how to). It's still worth playing, not that big of a deal.

1. The new last boss was my secret evil plan all along. Fawful was just a very elaborate ruse!
2. I changed {REDACTED} into {REDACTED} because {REDACTED} didn't fit the theme. Make sense?
3. I have other ideas for events, but this is the last time I'm ever doing one of this scale. Future installments will be...notably smaller.

So I've been thinking about getting into the streaming business for a while now. And this game's release seems like a great opportunity to get started while simultaneously giving some feedback to all the devs who submitted levels.

Schedule-wise, I'm currently considering this Saturday (Feb. 24th) at 8pm GMT on my newly created stream channel, https://www.twitch.tv/theunsilentforce/ . So if that sounds good, and any of you guys would be interested in seeing a live playthrough of SRW2 with commentary and all, I'd be happy to see you then and there!
I don't have internet at home so I'll miss out on it :(
This is one of the reasons why I prefer standard videos over live streams. You can watch the video at anytime where a live stream is just like cable TV, if you don't tune in on a certain time then you miss it & can't watch it, unless its archived as a video to watch later.

Doesn't Twitch record videos automatically?

I'll be dead on my feet from work that day, but I can be there for it!

Stream recordings are always still available to watch for two weeks after the stream, even if they're not archived. And I absolutely will archive the video as a highlight, so no worries.
Just keep your outfit tasteful, if you have a camera on yourself, they are cracking down on that stuff haha
Lovely! I just hit a brick wall! I've managed to get up to part 4 uploaded but everytime I try to upload part 5, I get a 'Can't Process Video' error. I'll have to open the video in some video editor & try to fix it. Google searches have brought up that it might have something to do with file format even though its the same as the first 4, but I guess I need to 're-encode' it. Youtube needs to get its act together!
