I love the graphics, great work!
I love the artwork style, but the whole Gameboy inspired border just isn't doing it for me. I wouldn't want to play this game in fullscreen because that border would defeat the purpose of even doing so. If I were to ever play this, I would do so using Windows' magnifying glass and zoom in just over the game screen.

I hope that the Gameboy frame is only optional.

You could always go digging in the game resources and edit that frame to whatever you want. Black even.

Dude, don't lie. You'll be playing this and you know it :P
Or you could just submit the window skin you want to play with to Avee's "Game Border Drawing" contest?

Remind me again why the portraits don't share the same skin color that the sprites? That weirds me out for some reason. xP

Your version looks good but it reduces shading depth. I have to draw several facial expressions for each character's portrait, and I absolutely have to have all 3 darker shades available in order to depict them right.

I also think the portraits are pretty even if the skin color doesn't match, so it isn't something that bothers me, really.
If I had a fifth color available, I would have totally used the same skin color for both portrait and sprite. But I prefer to stay true to the 4-colors rule.
Well, if I were you I'd use a fifth color when necessary. I mean, yes, "game boy", we get it-- But it's not like you're following every rule to the 'T'. It's just a theme, a nostalgic throwback, nothing is set in stone... But hey, man, your call. =)
