The Story - Why the rush?

Word about treasure spreads quickly to pirates near and far... especially if that word is written on 1000 parchments, stuffed in 1000 bottles and scattered throughout the thous-err... seven seas.

Four hidden islands... each island containing a treasure that noone has ever seen... each treasure protected by an equally mysterious guardian...

"A race? Hooktooth's entire fortune to whoever brings him all four treasures?"
"That's what the message said, Cap'n."
“We have a heading then - we depart immediately. No telling how many other scallywags we'll have to gut to get our turn!”

Even with the most vague details of the race, no pirate can resist exploring, fighting and most of all rolling in glistening mountains of gold. And so the great pirate rush begins...

Vex Silver is a crew member aboard the Orctapuss – a sturdy ship of rum drinking ruffians, one of the first vessels to arrive at the 'Sacred Islands'. During an attempt to make port, a fierce storm rises from nowhere, scuttling the ship and separating Vex from the crew.

Only one thing goes through Vex's mind when he finds himself alone on the beach... No need to split the treasure if he finds all four himself! Little did he know of the dangerous monsters, life threatening voodoo magics and the curse of the four treasures he was seeking.

WHERE'S THE DOWNLOAD!?
Version 7.1 is no longer available, Version 8 has taken it's place.

KNOWN BUGS IN V8:
- Fire urn puzzle in the first dungeon: If you kill a mob in a position that an urn has to go, the urn will not light. Leave the room and go back in if that happens.
- Blind healing item doesn't heal blind
- An overlay error from the water dungeon onward (a bug somewhere that doesn't restore the correct overlay).

November Pirate Progress

Okay, so I've been slack and busy learning scripting and other things so haven't actually done much on Pirate Rush. I decided to release the updated version of what I have done anyway, even though it's not that much more gameplay. Total time it took me to do a test run of version 8 is 2 hours 15 minutes (not bothering getting any of the secrets etc.

VERSION 7.1 TO 8 NOTES:

Visual:
- Volcano boss added "Time left" display text animation to help players notice there is a timer.
- Added some environmental effects such as splashing in shallow water.
- New water effects in all maps with water.
- Added "Graphics" option - if your computer is struggling with these new effects, change this setting to "low". This setting disables some scripts that hog the most processor use.

Gameplay:
- Added a quick tutorial for Aryll.
- MINI GAME ADDED: "Sailor's Luck" - dice gambling.
- MINI GAME ADDED: "Vexboarding" - sailboarding action sequence
- Further advancing the story.
- More maps to explore and another dungeon/puzzle.
- Added a few more skills (still more of them to come)

Ahhhh dangit. I missed some code that does cause a crash.
Don't touch the red orb in the volcano...

The orb resets the puzzle so you can try again... you can leave the map and enter it for the same effect if you want to keep trying but I have temporarily removed the file and will upload it with fix soon

I missed it during all my testing :(

Those bugs are gonna happen if you throw 100 testers at a game. I wouldn't worry :)
Thanks :)

Well, I sorted the crashing bugs I hope. Let's see what others people find haha.
Beat the last boss so far. Am I not supposed to get a save prompt?

I like Aryll's skill set. So far it seems to be the most tactical one. I must say though, I ended up entering the input for Vex's attacks quite a few times when Aryll was attacking and consequently messed up her combos. About halfway trough the final boss, I learned to pay better attention to who was actually acting.

The game is more or less as fun as it was before.
Thanks for trying it out.
I should have put a save prompt after the boss... that would have been smart (sorry... haha). I guess when the next part is out, the save file before the boss can be used.

I was wondering if people would mix up Vex and Aryll's combos. Not sure if people will like it or hate it. I could change it to be the same style as Vex's instead.

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated
I had no problem with her combos at all. I didnt understand exactly why they didnt work some times, was it rage or stamina related? but I definately liked it, and never mixed them up with vex. lol heaven forbid you have to pay attention to win a boss fight ;)
Actually I just realised I don't have a tutorial for how Aryll works... haha.
Should probably do that.

Yeah, if she doesn't have the stamina to complete the combo she stops.
I figured out how Aryll works pretty much immediately. The problem is that when I'm using Vex, my input for him is usually AA or AAA, and sometimes when Aryll acts, I end up hitting A out of reflexes before I realize my mistake. If I wanted to use Rapid Fire or Popsicle, I'm out of luck.

To add some information, Vex will act before Aryll (they have the same agility though.) Usually it's when Vex gets stunned or something else disrupts his turn that I make the mistake.

Found a bug.
When you reset the fire path puzzle, one of the six rocks doesn't respawn.

I can't tell you which rock is buggy. The one on the top, however, seems to reset.
Thank god I had an extra save ^.^;
My unofficial beta tester! haha

I can't actually reproduce this bug. I don't suppose you remember exactly what you did for it to happen? The fraps FPS is not red, does that mean you weren't recording at that time?

I cut it to figure out the puzzle without boring people. Unfortunately, I can't reproduce the bug without restarting.
I deleted the save files like a jerk >.>
Did you destroy all of the rocks and then reset them using the orb?
I know the red rocks can destroy the movable ones. Do they have something to do with this bug?
Mmm, so much for my unofficial beta tester title :/
Haha, not to worry.
I can't find out what could have done it, though. I've tried destroying them all etc.
I have a suspicion that it could be the 'reset occurring on the exact frame as rock exploding' (which only my unoffical beta tester could ever find! haha).
I've tweaked how the reset works so that theoretical bug cannot happen (for future releases).

If this happens to anyone else, in theory, pressing the red orb again should restore the missing rock... (unless I've missed something which is possible haha)

Weird bugs like this make me scared when creating RM puzzles 8-|
As the rocks Vex can pull them anywhere and to enter the cave in the rock of larval entry has to be the last to be pushed.
I'm having trouble doing combos with S. No money is earned by defeating enemies?

I don't know what you mean by this

What kind of trouble are you having? Not comfortable using that key as part of the combos?

Only pirates drop gold. You gain items from the wildlife that you can sell for gold.
against the dragon is saying this message and ends the fight.
this is wrong. That's not how the story ends. And back to the beginning of the next save dragon.
Did you run out of time? You're fighting against the clock in that battle also.
I'm thinking I will make that more noticeable.

Umm, that fight has a timer. You need to be quick to kill the dragon. Otherwise, you pretty much lost the fight.
Hey, Galv.
Do you think it might be a good idea to increase the JP gained from killing monsters?
I started to lose interest when killing them, and never got the abilities I wanted before the demo ended.
Hmm. Would having more skills make you not lose interest, though? (I suppose everyone wants all the skills quickly haha)
Or maybe it's the enemy mobs being quite boring in the last area?

I suppose I could bump up the JP earned a tiny bit. Maybe 2 per monster and I'll include some JP increasing treasures/secrets or rewards for other mini games.

EDIT: I think I'll just reduce the cost of skills across the board. Some are very high costed. I was going for a slow advancement in skills but maybe too slow?

Losing interest... I take that back for now. I felt as though the reward for killing the monsters was a little too low, but I might be wrong.
Also the fights weren't boring with the new party member. I was just concerned with their rewards.

A little bit. I'm not a fan of needing to level for JP. If you do add other ways to gather JP, that problem should be void.
