Blackmoon Prophecy is now the #1 most viewed game of all time on RMN. Thanks to all of you for the views over the years, I appreciate it!
______________________________________________________

Do not edit the game without first applying the David patch. This is because some monsters have over 1000 attack/magic and 100,000+ HP. Editing without the David patch will reduce monster stats to rm2k3's default maximum values. Ignore this warning if you already have applied the David patch to your rm2k3.

What is Blackmoon Prophecy?
A Final Fantasy fangame that I started long ago in 2003 that is meant to emulate the first six entries of the series (though I mostly focus on FF4 and FF5 for gameplay and mapping, and FF6 for battle aesthetics). Aside from just being a fangame, Blackmoon Prophecy is also a tribute to Final Fantasy in the sense that I'm trying to put together many of the things I loved about playing RPGs growing up into this game. It's a love letter to retro gaming and our childhoods.

What's with this whole "Plus" deal?
The Plus! update adds DynRPG support by including several patches made using it such as faster ATB bars, a play time counter on the menu, and more. Additional content in the game includes a new section to the arena, a new optional dungeon, a few reworked cutscenes, and various bug fixes.

How long is the game?
My best guess is about twenty hours, but I'm not 100% sure. My testing sessions were broken up very often so I can't measure how long it took me to beat the game personally. I'm certain that it was over 15 hours though, and since I made the game I expect the average time to be higher than that for everyone else. My best guess is 20+ hours.

Do I need the RTP to play?
Heck no!

Are there any impressive custom systems, impressive features, etc?
Long story short, no. The early Final Fantasy titles were not known to blow our minds with amazing features (FF3 and FF5 were really the only ones that did in my opinion, and only because of their job systems).

There is no steal command, "throw" items are selected by going to items and choosing the item to throw, and "jump" isn't a command, but rather several different abilities that have jumping animations.

As a result, Blackmoon Prophecy is just a retro romp that just tries to recreate what we all used to feel as we'd trudge through all of the caves and dungeons of the early Final Fantasy games.

The most advanced aspect of Blackmoon Prophecy's gameplay is a simplified version of Final Fantasy 8's weapon upgrading system. A few minigames can possibly be included as well (auction house, betting on chocobo races, etc.) but this game is kept simple to emulate the simple games it is inspired by.

How many <insert something here> are there in this game?
Permanent Playable Characters: 12 (3 being optional/secret)
Temporary Playable Characters: 2
Equippable Items: 150+
Mandatory Dungeons: 30+
Monsters: 400+
Playable Hours: 20-30 hours (presumably)
Optional Dungeons: 10+
Towns: 20+
World Maps: 3

December 2024 Update: This game was completed over 12 years ago. It is from a different time in my life, and I do NOT support the game any longer or offer any assistance/help any longer so please do not come to me for any. Having completed the game more than a full decade ago, I just honestly don't remember very much from the game and any assistance I would offer would not be very helpful. Plus, twelve years later, I just have no interest in the Blackmoon Prophecy games and have moved on from them fully. Please reference user-made documents/manuals, YouTube playthroughs, or the help page here on RMN if you need any assistance.

Blackmoon Prophecy 1.24 Update

I vaguely hinted that I was trying to work on a Blackmoon Prophecy "remaster" of sorts. I instead scaled back what I wanted to do because I didn't want it to take too long, so the remaster has instead been downscaled to a regular update. Here's what in the update:

Version 1.24
- Added a new path through the mountains west of the Mohadmal Pyramid as a secondary way to reach Mohadmal Dock.
- Added additional treasure chests in areas where I thought they were needed.
- Added an NPC in Garamonde who will give the player a new weapon in exchange for a Sunstone (it's somewhere in Sunleth Waterscape).
- Added an option to skip the intro sequence for returning players.
- Added optional boss: Nitemare. He can be found in a purple pot in the final dungeon and requires a bloodstone to draw out.
- Added optional boss: Vertumnus. Takes Yemaja's place in the Everlasting Tangle when the final dungeon becomes available.
- Corrected text in a lot of chest pop-ups as the text for some chests did not reflect what was actually inside due to many item renames over the years.
- Edited the names of many items to better reflect what they are (ie. "Broad" is now "Broadsword").
- Finally remembered to edit the version number in the game window's title! It was still saying version 1.21 prior to this update.
- Fixed a few typos.
- Minor tweaking of the stats of a few bosses.
- Renamed several skill names (ie. Frenzied Lancer is now Dragonstrike, Syphon Spear is now Lancer, and so forth).
- Removed Dragon's Courage, Dragon's Devotion, and Dragon's Resolve from Vahn's ability list.
- Tightened up corridors on several maps and cleaned up/redid some areas that I thought looked subpar.

As usual, you can find the updated version of the game in the downloads.

Final note, this does not change the overall experience of the game and is mostly just a QoL update (the new bosses were added on a whim at the last minute). If you were not a fan of Blackmoon Prophecy before, this update won't change that.

Do you think you might be able to make Branch Castle in the third world look more.. ruined? It's just a minor nitpick I have, but if a castle survived the apocalypse untouched (save for the bones of the Dragoons, Adder's soul, and a somehow still alive librarian), then I'd be surprised.
author=UPRC
Well, Mt. Ordeals no longer exists on the third world map... or at least it shouldn't as of the update before the last one.

I'm still on version 1.18b, and Mt. Ordeals was still there, just as Mt.-Ordealsy as ever. I remember you saying that you were going to replace it with something else in the third world a while back, but it's still there. Also, defeating Orphan in that version still didn't yield a trophy.
UPRC
Exciting, but ultimately pointless.

Orphan's trophy should show up, I tested it and it appeared to work for me. Mt. Ordeals HAS been removed now though, I don't know how I somehow forgot to remove it... unless I accidentally removed something else.

Exciting, but ultimately pointless.

Anyway, to make sure that Orphan's trophy DOES show up...

- Added a boss battle to the final Water Shrine visit that I originally forgot to add. Oops.
- Added Aether Mine to the first world map. It is a small optional cave located where the Forgotten Forest once was.
- Added moogles throughout the world who will sell crafting materials like the one in the Moogle Village.
- Added more MogNet GPS pads to the world map in areas where there really weren't any.
- Assigned a name to the Archareon Leader fought on the Eternal Blue to give the Archareons more of an identity.
- Assigned a name to the Archareon that Hans mentions towards the end of the game to give the Archareons more of an identity.
- Changed Malacore's battle sprite to be consistent throughout the entire game.
- Changed first world map slightly, added more rivers to Lenadia.
- Changed switch that activates Orphan's trophy so that players who already defeated him should have the trophy.
- Corrected weapon shop in Falgabard Port to sell weapons rather than armor.
- Fixed an issue involving an NPC in Branch Castle appearing when he should not.
- Moved Cid's laboratory east to the Great Plain to trim length of Lenadia portion of the game slightly.
- Removed a reference to moogle villages made by an NPC in Rivera.
- Removed Mt. Ordeals from the third world map since rewards received from it would be obsolete by that point.
- Removed the Forgotten Forest from the first world map. Put a lake and optional dungeon in place of it.
- Resolved an error with a chest in Albrook Cave to Citadel Sewers.
- Resolved an error with a chest in Mt. Ozma.
- Resolved issue that involved Cid remaining in Cornelia even after acquiring the airship.
- Rewrote a lot of dialogue sequences in the opening Branch/Ivalice areas of the game.

I'll probably aim to have this ready by the middle of the month... unless the list of things I'm doing gets bigger still.
Just as I saw this update, I ironically just made it to the forest in the game. Dang, maybe I should just wait until all the updates are made to finish this game.
Quick, enter the forest and kill the Phase Dragon! UPRC said he was axeing it along with the forest, so kill it while you still can! :P

By the way, I only have one more blue magic spell to teach Ami: Polar Air. Checking the database indicates that it's dropped by an enemy called "Cold Driver", but I've never seen it before. Where exactly are these enemies encountered? Thanks again!

Exciting, but ultimately pointless.

I forget!

I'll take a peek today when I get home, it shouldn't be too hard for me to locate. I'm guessing it's in an arctic area somewhere.
I'm glad the Forgotten Forest was removed. That place was an eyesore.

EDIT: Oh, I see what he's saying. Hurrah for secret enemies. ;)
Can you add to the update healing points before major fights. For example, the second Dio fight before you get the offering there is only a save point. Also, when I downloaded the latest version I though my save data would be carried over. I found out that is not the case. Also, is there anyway to buy ether other than getting it as a monster drop. Also, can you slightly increase the experience you get from defeating enemies as I have noticed in some areas of the game in the beginning you get the same experience from monsters with no slight increase to accommodate for the grinding sometimes required to get to a level satisfactory enough to beat them when you get to a major fight.

Most people complain that the game's too easy, so I'm not likely to toy with experience gains unless people suddenly become vocal about it.

How were your saves not compatible? As far as I know, nobody else has experienced any issues (or haven't reported any). The only patch that could've mucked up save files was the Plus patch with its DynRPG additions, but that was a little while ago now and nobody posted saying that their save stopped working. Could you describe how your save didn't carry over?
Another oversight spotted! The notice that is displayed when Ami joins the party is flawed; we're shown a completely transparent window with a (or something similar) at the start of the paragraph. I didn't check to see if anyone else noticed this in the last few pages of comments, so said error may have already been addressed!

Thank you very much! Now my blue magic list is complete!

Anyway, I recently noticed that if you manage to crush the Dark Elf before it can transform into the Dark Dragon, it doesn't drop anything, and so you end up missing out on the Merton armor.

Also, I checked up on those 5 Enforcers in that monster-in-a-box that I was talking about a while back. Apparently, one of them is supposed to drop an X-Ether, but its drop rate is at only 4% instead of the usual 100%.
I do not know if I can describe it. What I can do is tell you where I last saved and that was before the second Dio fight. Actually, I do know I downloaded the 1.18c and it downloaded the same way as 1.18b. I was worried that it would make a Blackmoon Prophecy Plus (1) folder name but apparently it didn't and overwrote everything in the game folder.

Boy, I guess we should forget about the Forgotten Forest.

Wow, how much damage were you dishing out? He's supposed to transform at 50% HP or so, but I may have forgotten to properly set the priority of the transformation to something above the default 50. Something else for me to tinker with!

As for the enforcer that drops the X-Ether, I'll have to check to see if that one enforcer is encountered anywhere else. It COULD be in random encounters.

If you're using a second folder, you'd have to copy your old saves over. The best way to update is just overwrite everything in the existing game folder. It won't touch your save files when you do.

Well then, it's a good thing that Elina can cast Life.

Well, if it helps, the database says "Action: Transform into DarkDragon; Precondition: Monster HP between 0-60; Priority: 50" I'm not exactly sure what that means. All I know is that Dark Elf simply can't handle the pain dished out by high-level Vahn, Nobumasa, and Siegfried.... on Berserk Rings... Oh god, I'm not helping the support of keeping these rings at all. :P

They don't need any support since they're already gone. ;)
