Blackmoon Prophecy is now the #1 most viewed game of all time on RMN. Thanks to all of you for the views over the years, I appreciate it!
______________________________________________________

Do not edit the game without first applying the David patch. This is because some monsters have over 1000 attack/magic and 100,000+ HP. Editing without the David patch will reduce monster stats to rm2k3's default maximum values. Ignore this warning if you already have applied the David patch to your rm2k3.

What is Blackmoon Prophecy?
A Final Fantasy fangame that I started long ago in 2003 that is meant to emulate the first six entries of the series (though I mostly focus on FF4 and FF5 for gameplay and mapping, and FF6 for battle aesthetics). Aside from just being a fangame, Blackmoon Prophecy is also a tribute to Final Fantasy in the sense that I'm trying to put together many of the things I loved about playing RPGs growing up into this game. It's a love letter to retro gaming and our childhoods.

What's with this whole "Plus" deal?
The Plus! update adds DynRPG support by including several patches made using it such as faster ATB bars, a play time counter on the menu, and more. Additional content in the game includes a new section to the arena, a new optional dungeon, a few reworked cutscenes, and various bug fixes.

How long is the game?
My best guess is about twenty hours, but I'm not 100% sure. My testing sessions were broken up very often so I can't measure how long it took me to beat the game personally. I'm certain that it was over 15 hours though, and since I made the game I expect the average time to be higher than that for everyone else. My best guess is 20+ hours.

Do I need the RTP to play?
Heck no!

Are there any impressive custom systems, impressive features, etc?
Long story short, no. The early Final Fantasy titles were not known to blow our minds with amazing features (FF3 and FF5 were really the only ones that did in my opinion, and only because of their job systems).

There is no steal command, "throw" items are selected by going to items and choosing the item to throw, and "jump" isn't a command, but rather several different abilities that have jumping animations.

As a result, Blackmoon Prophecy is just a retro romp that just tries to recreate what we all used to feel as we'd trudge through all of the caves and dungeons of the early Final Fantasy games.

The most advanced aspect of Blackmoon Prophecy's gameplay is a simplified version of Final Fantasy 8's weapon upgrading system. A few minigames can possibly be included as well (auction house, betting on chocobo races, etc.) but this game is kept simple to emulate the simple games it is inspired by.

How many <insert something here> are there in this game?
Permanent Playable Characters: 12 (3 being optional/secret)
Temporary Playable Characters: 2
Equippable Items: 150+
Mandatory Dungeons: 30+
Monsters: 400+
Playable Hours: 20-30 hours (presumably)
Optional Dungeons: 10+
Towns: 20+
World Maps: 3

December 2024 Update: This game was completed over 12 years ago. It is from a different time in my life, and I do NOT support the game any longer or offer any assistance/help any longer so please do not come to me for any. Having completed the game more than a full decade ago, I just honestly don't remember very much from the game and any assistance I would offer would not be very helpful. Plus, twelve years later, I just have no interest in the Blackmoon Prophecy games and have moved on from them fully. Please reference user-made documents/manuals, YouTube playthroughs, or the help page here on RMN if you need any assistance.

Blackmoon Prophecy 1.24 Update

I vaguely hinted that I was trying to work on a Blackmoon Prophecy "remaster" of sorts. I instead scaled back what I wanted to do because I didn't want it to take too long, so the remaster has instead been downscaled to a regular update. Here's what in the update:

Version 1.24
- Added a new path through the mountains west of the Mohadmal Pyramid as a secondary way to reach Mohadmal Dock.
- Added additional treasure chests in areas where I thought they were needed.
- Added an NPC in Garamonde who will give the player a new weapon in exchange for a Sunstone (it's somewhere in Sunleth Waterscape).
- Added an option to skip the intro sequence for returning players.
- Added optional boss: Nitemare. He can be found in a purple pot in the final dungeon and requires a bloodstone to draw out.
- Added optional boss: Vertumnus. Takes Yemaja's place in the Everlasting Tangle when the final dungeon becomes available.
- Corrected text in a lot of chest pop-ups as the text for some chests did not reflect what was actually inside due to many item renames over the years.
- Edited the names of many items to better reflect what they are (ie. "Broad" is now "Broadsword").
- Finally remembered to edit the version number in the game window's title! It was still saying version 1.21 prior to this update.
- Fixed a few typos.
- Minor tweaking of the stats of a few bosses.
- Renamed several skill names (ie. Frenzied Lancer is now Dragonstrike, Syphon Spear is now Lancer, and so forth).
- Removed Dragon's Courage, Dragon's Devotion, and Dragon's Resolve from Vahn's ability list.
- Tightened up corridors on several maps and cleaned up/redid some areas that I thought looked subpar.

As usual, you can find the updated version of the game in the downloads.

Final note, this does not change the overall experience of the game and is mostly just a QoL update (the new bosses were added on a whim at the last minute). If you were not a fan of Blackmoon Prophecy before, this update won't change that.

Exciting, but ultimately pointless.

I'm not surprised that abnormalities in the first game are still being found. I mean, it did take ten years of off and on work after all and it's a colossal game (most people report 40 hours minimum). That's partly why the balance is so weird in the early portions of the game as well. A lot went on in those ten years, and it's probably safe to say that there would be more balance and structure in the game if it hadn't taken so long to get done.

Thankfully, everything evens out after a bit. I look back on the first half or so of the game with disdain these days, but I still think most of the second half holds up. I may also feel this way due to the fact that the writing is just so much better in the sequel, which I'm busily trying to finish.
I don't mind the grinding.
I even fought Atomos (needed app. 50 Phoenix Downs).

So if you need a tester for FFBP II for a complete run, I would make it.

Ha, Atomos. He's 100% optional, so you could have gone back to him later. I think he was designed to be a pretty might challenge if you fight him right away.
worst game ever. no way of getting past the first boss as he does more damage than the characters have hp. if you remove the impossible boss i will happily redownload it.
I'm not sure what your problems are.

Here is the first section of my walkthrough:

After you have control of Vahn, hit the switch to get a Phoenix Down, Goggles and a Potion. Take the Antidote out of the pot. Let Hans join Vahn and go directly left through the wall to find some treasure chest containing the sum of 309 Gold. Buy some better Weapons and perhaps a Shield for both, save at the Save Point or in the INN and then enter the throne room.
Boss: Darius, just use Jump or normal attacks. Return to Lord Adder.

Hope this will help you.

You should be able to beat the first boss just by sitting back and hitting the enter key repeatedly, lol.

IF that's too much for you, then maybe RPGs aren't your thing.
How do I defeat Malacore in the Fen Stronghold?
Even with two damage dealers (Vahn and Nobumasa) and two healers (Ami and Elina),
I get killed before I can heal. It happens so fast that I can't cast Force Shield and Big Guard.
And yes: I protected the mages against Mute.
Random note:
In the Hillsdale Underground Passage, after the boss, in the room with the treasures, one of them said 'obtained Berserk Ring', and I looked thouroughly for it in the character's accessory slots, then in my entire inventory, and I can't find it. o:
Was it taken out and forgot to be replaced or?

Yes, the Berserk Ring was replaced in the database with "Steady Shoes". The chest adds a Steady Shoes to your inventory but UPRC forgot to edit the message. :P

I can't look into the really huge inventory every time I got something, but it isn't the first item that's been replaced (see chocobo race).
But you can be sure that each "Elixer" is added to "Elixir".

Edit: I changed Nobumasa for Bosche as a third healer. Now I grind and hope for X-Esuna (if it exists)

Thanks for the answer! :3

So since it was replaced in the database, that means there's no accessory that grants auto-berserk anymore? Dx

@ Firefly ;

If i get up to that point, I'll let you know if there still hasn't been an answer yet!

But you can be sure that each "Elixer" is added to "Elixir".

Because what you see in the text window is manually entered, meaning I type what you see. The elixer/elixir thing is just a misspelling, it has no bearing on what item is given to you. This is an old game that took 10 years of my life and was a completely solo endeavour, a few things were overlooked/missed since the testers I had for the game rarely tested and provided abysmal feedback.

It's been a long time since I've even looked at that part of the game, so I can't recall the strategy beyond brute forcing it. I do recall hearing that casting mute on him works. Fire should also be pretty effective against him.

Here is my finally working tactic for those two bosses:

Before facing the bosses protect your mages against mute (like Ribbon, Conch Seashell, Zephyr Cape and White Cape) and Vahn against petrify (Gem Ring)! If you have the Ribbon give it to Elina, her Life-spell is stronger than Phoenix Down.
Desired party: Vahn, Elina, Oalston and Ami/Bosche

Boss: Mundilfari
He is immune to elemental attacks and uses haunted, which is the opposite of Hp/Mp –Regen and may cause stop. Revive when death is successful and use a Remedy on a stopped healer.

Boss Malacore
X-Cure and White Wind or similar (Pandora’s Box) will be your lifesaver here. Cast Mute immediately and use the Megalixir to replenish your MP. As soon as Malacore is muted, he isn’t as dangerous as before. Then you can switch to Fire2/Ice2 or Bio, Goblin Punch or stronger with Ami, White/Holybolt with Elina and X-Slash or normal attacks with Vahn.
I just noticed that a "Draw" by playing Aurabolt results in losing the game.
The rewards are unpredictable, too.
Most of the time 25*sum is right, but I even got 1500, 1900, 2000 and 2100 Gold too.

If you have trouble to remember Aurabolt, it's the Card Game at Jack's Shack.

Edit: A possible explanation would be, when winning with more points than Jack, the reward is 100*sum, when winning because Jack got over 21, than the reward is 25*sum.
But when I have 20 and Jack has 20 points, I lose.

Oh, it looks like I quoted the wrong person! I don't remember encountering any issues or hearing of any, but I don't think anyone really ever commented on it in the past.
Well, it's a good way to earn money.
When it got to boring, I can explore the world.

@Knigthowl:
I will update the link regulary but I will continue with the main story line when I have done everything else.
I feel like I read this somewhere in the game but I forgot and can't find it again, so;

What's the difference between Tier 1, 2, and 3 weapons?

Like how it's II Attack Rating +2.044. What's the +2 mean, since the 44 is the attack power the 2 doesnt seem to affect anything.
and if I say found a Tier I weapon that was stronger like +1.051 what would the tier II weapon have over it?
I think the weapons have different damage modifiers, AKA "Elements" as listed in the editor. The higher the tier, the greater the modifier. At least that's how I THINK it works, anyway. I could be way off, but I don't think there's any other way to really work around that utilizing RPG Maker.

So Tier 1 might be:
A: 350
B: 300
C: 250
D: 200
E: 150

And Tier 2 might be:
A: 450
B: 400
C: 350
D: 300
E: 250

Etc.
In some weapon shops (the still existing beginner cities) stands a NPC telling you about those things.
I already have some tier 3 weapons. When I found them doing things not mentioned in the description like "dual attack" I will mention it in my list.
But understand that I won't try every weapon for such effects.

Some other numbers: Vera was doing app. 3.000 damage with a dual attack weapon II and is now doing app. 4.000 damage with an weapon III.
Or Vahn is now doing app. 10.000 damage with a dual attack weapon III.

I'm not sure but when will I get Limit Break equipment? I have the David Patch installed but my maximum damage is still 9999 per hit.
author=Firefly84
snip

AFAIK the david patch doesn't let the player character(s) break the damage limit; so you wont be finding that limit break equipment :(
