Blackmoon Prophecy is now the #1 most viewed game of all time on RMN. Thanks to all of you for the views over the years, I appreciate it!
______________________________________________________

Do not edit the game without first applying the David patch. This is because some monsters have over 1000 attack/magic and 100,000+ HP. Editing without the David patch will reduce monster stats to rm2k3's default maximum values. Ignore this warning if you already have applied the David patch to your rm2k3.

What is Blackmoon Prophecy?
A Final Fantasy fangame that I started long ago in 2003 that is meant to emulate the first six entries of the series (though I mostly focus on FF4 and FF5 for gameplay and mapping, and FF6 for battle aesthetics). Aside from just being a fangame, Blackmoon Prophecy is also a tribute to Final Fantasy in the sense that I'm trying to put together many of the things I loved about playing RPGs growing up into this game. It's a love letter to retro gaming and our childhoods.

What's with this whole "Plus" deal?
The Plus! update adds DynRPG support by including several patches made using it such as faster ATB bars, a play time counter on the menu, and more. Additional content in the game includes a new section to the arena, a new optional dungeon, a few reworked cutscenes, and various bug fixes.

How long is the game?
My best guess is about twenty hours, but I'm not 100% sure. My testing sessions were broken up very often so I can't measure how long it took me to beat the game personally. I'm certain that it was over 15 hours though, and since I made the game I expect the average time to be higher than that for everyone else. My best guess is 20+ hours.

Do I need the RTP to play?
Heck no!

Are there any impressive custom systems, impressive features, etc?
Long story short, no. The early Final Fantasy titles were not known to blow our minds with amazing features (FF3 and FF5 were really the only ones that did in my opinion, and only because of their job systems).

There is no steal command, "throw" items are selected by going to items and choosing the item to throw, and "jump" isn't a command, but rather several different abilities that have jumping animations.

As a result, Blackmoon Prophecy is just a retro romp that just tries to recreate what we all used to feel as we'd trudge through all of the caves and dungeons of the early Final Fantasy games.

The most advanced aspect of Blackmoon Prophecy's gameplay is a simplified version of Final Fantasy 8's weapon upgrading system. A few minigames can possibly be included as well (auction house, betting on chocobo races, etc.) but this game is kept simple to emulate the simple games it is inspired by.

How many <insert something here> are there in this game?
Permanent Playable Characters: 12 (3 being optional/secret)
Temporary Playable Characters: 2
Equippable Items: 150+
Mandatory Dungeons: 30+
Monsters: 400+
Playable Hours: 20-30 hours (presumably)
Optional Dungeons: 10+
Towns: 20+
World Maps: 3

December 2024 Update: This game was completed over 12 years ago. It is from a different time in my life, and I do NOT support the game any longer or offer any assistance/help any longer so please do not come to me for any. Having completed the game more than a full decade ago, I just honestly don't remember very much from the game and any assistance I would offer would not be very helpful. Plus, twelve years later, I just have no interest in the Blackmoon Prophecy games and have moved on from them fully. Please reference user-made documents/manuals, YouTube playthroughs, or the help page here on RMN if you need any assistance.

Blackmoon Prophecy 1.24 Update

I vaguely hinted that I was trying to work on a Blackmoon Prophecy "remaster" of sorts. I instead scaled back what I wanted to do because I didn't want it to take too long, so the remaster has instead been downscaled to a regular update. Here's what in the update:

Version 1.24
- Added a new path through the mountains west of the Mohadmal Pyramid as a secondary way to reach Mohadmal Dock.
- Added additional treasure chests in areas where I thought they were needed.
- Added an NPC in Garamonde who will give the player a new weapon in exchange for a Sunstone (it's somewhere in Sunleth Waterscape).
- Added an option to skip the intro sequence for returning players.
- Added optional boss: Nitemare. He can be found in a purple pot in the final dungeon and requires a bloodstone to draw out.
- Added optional boss: Vertumnus. Takes Yemaja's place in the Everlasting Tangle when the final dungeon becomes available.
- Corrected text in a lot of chest pop-ups as the text for some chests did not reflect what was actually inside due to many item renames over the years.
- Edited the names of many items to better reflect what they are (ie. "Broad" is now "Broadsword").
- Finally remembered to edit the version number in the game window's title! It was still saying version 1.21 prior to this update.
- Fixed a few typos.
- Minor tweaking of the stats of a few bosses.
- Renamed several skill names (ie. Frenzied Lancer is now Dragonstrike, Syphon Spear is now Lancer, and so forth).
- Removed Dragon's Courage, Dragon's Devotion, and Dragon's Resolve from Vahn's ability list.
- Tightened up corridors on several maps and cleaned up/redid some areas that I thought looked subpar.

As usual, you can find the updated version of the game in the downloads.

Final note, this does not change the overall experience of the game and is mostly just a QoL update (the new bosses were added on a whim at the last minute). If you were not a fan of Blackmoon Prophecy before, this update won't change that.

"snipped"

Sorry I went on a rant, just not a fan of the Trophy name called Death of Linearity due to my own personal takes.
FWIW, I tried the Randomizer out. I was given Oalston instead of Hans.

Within Branch Castle/City, I found a tier3 weapon for Vahn. And a hat that auto-Empowerered Oalston, along with end-game mage armor with +200 magic on it. Meaning that although the Magic stat is notoriously underpowered in 2003, having over 500 of it at level 1 ... wasn't.

I know the intro said "It could be a nightmare or a cakewalk", but I think that was taking the 'cakewalk' part a little too far~

I might re-roll the start to see if I can get something more interesting? Or just continue anyway, steamrolling the first two-thirds of the game? I'll let you know how it goes if I do!
Any chance this could be put on a cartridge and played on a SNES? I'm not a PC gaming person as I only have a work computer. I don't have any equipment to get a ROM onto a cartridge, just curious if it would play correctly on SNES and how difficult it could be to get onto a chip.

No, as I stated in another reply to you on the game page, this is 100% not possible.

Something I did for fun. Blackmoon Prophecy character tier list maker!

I love this game ... but the ATB doesn't seem to work. I still gets man-handled at
every filled ATB bar. And no, changing the ATB in menu doesn't work.
Other than that, this is the best non-final-fantasy final fantasy you can play!

10/10

Good vibes.

BIG update coming for this game hopefully before August. Doing a massive rewrite of much of the game's dialogue and fixing text in a lot of chest events, item names/descriptions, and more. This is being done because, honestly, I have no fond feelings for this game anymore because of a lot of issues in the game's script. I want to bring the dialogue in the game up to my modern standards, especially for people who may play Blackmoon Prophecy Prelude first since it is a prequel to this game. The drop in writing quality would have been astounding and probably very off-putting, so I'm working on making sure there's consistency across all three games in terms of script quality.

Currently, this is how the update is shaping up and what's going to be included in it:

Version 1.24 (Remaster Patch)
- Added option to skip the intro credits/sequences.
- Berserk no longer increases character's speed.
- Changed "gold" to "gil".
- Changed equipment names to show the full names of the armor/weapon pieces (ie. "Broad" will now appear as "Broadsword" in-game).
- Changed leveled ability/spell lists for characters slightly.
- Character names are now colourized in dialogue windows.
- Fixed as many chests as I could find that had incorrect info displayed when opened.
- Haste and Quick conditions were identical. Changed Quick parameters to allow affected character to have extremely high evasion.
- Lowered ATB speed for party members to match the speed of enemies. Should result in fairer fights from start to finish.
- Rebalanced magic damage in early parts of the game.
- Replaced some of the SNES FF4 monster sprites with their more colourful GBA counterparts.
- Rewrote a large amount of dialogue throughout the entire game.

I doubt that there will be anything "new" in the game, so there may not be much incentive for returning players to give the game another play through unless you just really like the game or something. This update is, again, primarily being worked on for brand new players who may experience Blackmoon Prophecy II or Blackmoon Prophecy Prelude beforehand.
I cannot believe this game is still receiving this level of updates lol
I sunk like 50 hours in it, many many years ago, and had a blast. Didn't beat it! The updates are making me want to try it out again, DESPITE it being such a long game and me rarely playing games anymore lol.

Square Enix should hire you! FFXIV should have an Oalston raid.

Honestly, I planned nearly two years ago to never touch this one ever again, but I just feel so main disdain for the writing and such in this game that I feel like I need to go back and touch it all up for people who may play this after the other two games. The difference in writing quality would be super jarring.

UPRC over here being the true MVP and giving all his project the care and love they deserve.
I tried to download the latest version multiple times, but when I try to open the rar, it keeps saying "The archive is either in an unknown format or damaged", and it won't open. I've tried three times already. I have no idea why it's doing this, as the download seems to have completed each time.

That's weird! I just downloaded it and extracted it without issue. If the RMN download keeps failing, you could give the download on Itch a try: https://uprc.itch.io/final-fantasy-blackmoon-prophecy
Ah, it was probably because I had an old version of WinRAR. I downloaded and tried it with 7Zip and it worked just fine.
This error happened several times
restarting the game again :(

I have this Letter to Kokkol. Where do I go?

Just in case you haven't figured it out by now, you need to take it to Kokkol's Smithy, which is at the southern end of the desert southwest of Mysidia. The Letter to Kokkol is key to getting a unique third-tier weapon: the Lionheart sword. But unfortunately, you will also need another key item to actually make it: the Moon Rock, which is in a chest in the first part of the final dungeon: The Lucidgrove Abyss. I believe it's somewhere down the path southwest of the entrance, if memory serves correctly.
Has anyone talked about what's considered the best party combo, what stat increasing item to give to who?
author=UPRC
Unexpected.

Oh hey, I didn't know that Dorkly did stuff like this. I should check out more by them!
There's a bit of an error when you're given the option to jump down the cliff in the hillsdale underground, if you decline to do so, your characters map movement speed gets halved with seemingly no way to restore it.
