Blackmoon Prophecy is now the #1 most viewed game of all time on RMN. Thanks to all of you for the views over the years, I appreciate it!
______________________________________________________

Do not edit the game without first applying the David patch. This is because some monsters have over 1000 attack/magic and 100,000+ HP. Editing without the David patch will reduce monster stats to rm2k3's default maximum values. Ignore this warning if you already have applied the David patch to your rm2k3.

What is Blackmoon Prophecy?
A Final Fantasy fangame that I started long ago in 2003 that is meant to emulate the first six entries of the series (though I mostly focus on FF4 and FF5 for gameplay and mapping, and FF6 for battle aesthetics). Aside from just being a fangame, Blackmoon Prophecy is also a tribute to Final Fantasy in the sense that I'm trying to put together many of the things I loved about playing RPGs growing up into this game. It's a love letter to retro gaming and our childhoods.

What's with this whole "Plus" deal?
The Plus! update adds DynRPG support by including several patches made using it such as faster ATB bars, a play time counter on the menu, and more. Additional content in the game includes a new section to the arena, a new optional dungeon, a few reworked cutscenes, and various bug fixes.

How long is the game?
My best guess is about twenty hours, but I'm not 100% sure. My testing sessions were broken up very often so I can't measure how long it took me to beat the game personally. I'm certain that it was over 15 hours though, and since I made the game I expect the average time to be higher than that for everyone else. My best guess is 20+ hours.

Do I need the RTP to play?
Heck no!

Are there any impressive custom systems, impressive features, etc?
Long story short, no. The early Final Fantasy titles were not known to blow our minds with amazing features (FF3 and FF5 were really the only ones that did in my opinion, and only because of their job systems).

There is no steal command, "throw" items are selected by going to items and choosing the item to throw, and "jump" isn't a command, but rather several different abilities that have jumping animations.

As a result, Blackmoon Prophecy is just a retro romp that just tries to recreate what we all used to feel as we'd trudge through all of the caves and dungeons of the early Final Fantasy games.

The most advanced aspect of Blackmoon Prophecy's gameplay is a simplified version of Final Fantasy 8's weapon upgrading system. A few minigames can possibly be included as well (auction house, betting on chocobo races, etc.) but this game is kept simple to emulate the simple games it is inspired by.

How many <insert something here> are there in this game?
Permanent Playable Characters: 12 (3 being optional/secret)
Temporary Playable Characters: 2
Equippable Items: 150+
Mandatory Dungeons: 30+
Monsters: 400+
Playable Hours: 20-30 hours (presumably)
Optional Dungeons: 10+
Towns: 20+
World Maps: 3

Blackmoon Prophecy 1.24 Update

I vaguely hinted that I was trying to work on a Blackmoon Prophecy "remaster" of sorts. I instead scaled back what I wanted to do because I didn't want it to take too long, so the remaster has instead been downscaled to a regular update. Here's what in the update:

Version 1.24
- Added a new path through the mountains west of the Mohadmal Pyramid as a secondary way to reach Mohadmal Dock.
- Added additional treasure chests in areas where I thought they were needed.
- Added an NPC in Garamonde who will give the player a new weapon in exchange for a Sunstone (it's somewhere in Sunleth Waterscape).
- Added an option to skip the intro sequence for returning players.
- Added optional boss: Nitemare. He can be found in a purple pot in the final dungeon and requires a bloodstone to draw out.
- Added optional boss: Vertumnus. Takes Yemaja's place in the Everlasting Tangle when the final dungeon becomes available.
- Corrected text in a lot of chest pop-ups as the text for some chests did not reflect what was actually inside due to many item renames over the years.
- Edited the names of many items to better reflect what they are (ie. "Broad" is now "Broadsword").
- Finally remembered to edit the version number in the game window's title! It was still saying version 1.21 prior to this update.
- Fixed a few typos.
- Minor tweaking of the stats of a few bosses.
- Renamed several skill names (ie. Frenzied Lancer is now Dragonstrike, Syphon Spear is now Lancer, and so forth).
- Removed Dragon's Courage, Dragon's Devotion, and Dragon's Resolve from Vahn's ability list.
- Tightened up corridors on several maps and cleaned up/redid some areas that I thought looked subpar.

As usual, you can find the updated version of the game in the downloads.

Final note, this does not change the overall experience of the game and is mostly just a QoL update (the new bosses were added on a whim at the last minute). If you were not a fan of Blackmoon Prophecy before, this update won't change that.

Yeah, I think that's what's supposed to be done. I haven't had to test that part in ages, but it's working fine for sure.

If for whatever reason you're stuck on something and can't proceed (and I'm not answering), I'd suggest checking out Clareain_Christopher's LP of the game since he chugs through everything at a decent rate.
Yes, sitting down works fine. Thanks.

Thank you Coolopotomus you brilliant Adonis.
Any time :D
For those who have played Final Fantasy Dimensions on Iphone, is that a better game than Blackmoon propechy ?

I know it's not fair comparing free amateur game to commercial release but just want to know your opinions.

I'd like to try that, but only have an Android phone. I'm paranoid that Square-Enix will charge too much for it as well. Something is wrong when Electronic Arts, the ultimate evil, sells brand new games on Google Play for $4 or $5 while Square-Enix decides that Chrono Trigger on Android is worth $10. Knowing them, Dimensions will cost $15 or something.
The full game of Dimensions costs more than $15.

Really? What a rip-off. I haven't read a single review that raves about the game. I guess that random battles occur way too frequently (the encounter rate seemed like borderline abuse from a video I watched). I've never been sold on the graphics either, they just look really lifeless and without soul. I hate how every new 2D RPG looks like a really bland RPG Maker XP game now. RIP 1990s. :(
When you upgrade the Elven bow to Sniper in Dawnmarch, its attack goes down from 1.045 to 1.020, with (as far as I can see) no compensating stat changes elsewhere. Is this intentional?
The only ones still making 2D RPG is Nippon Ichi and Idea Factory, and yeah their sprites not exactly the best but in my opinion still beat any RPG maker games.

Nope. Thanks for pointing that out, I'll be sure to buff the Sniper bow in the next update.

I'm also working on making the Rift Shrine a much nicer place to spend time (on the third world map). Will be adding three new rooms...

Rift Crystal Room: Fast travel. Teleports the party (and the airship) to a few different locations on the world map (one location per continent).

Sanctum: Activate/deactivate runes to modify characters. Can upgrade their existing spells, greatly alter their stats, and other things. Vera can be turned into a mighty tank, Elina can be turned into an offensive glass cannon, etc. As per previous request, low level spells (fire, fira, etc.) can be removed from Elina, Godot, and Oalston as well.

Supply Room: The recruitable vendors will set up shop here. Room will become more decorated as vendors are recruited. Will also add another NPC to find who will serve as an innkeeper.

I'm not a fan of fully modified character roles, especially in RPG with multiple party members. Each and every one should play their specific roles to complement party's strength and cover weaknesses. That makes them unique and can be replaced to adapt specific battle/encounter.

But that just my opinion. I know many people like to fully customize their characters

I'm not doing anything too extensive. The characters all get two different runes that unlock at different levels. The runes alter the characters in predefined ways, so the player can't control how stats change or anything. They basically look at what is offered and decide if they are good alternatives to their current setups. Here's what can be done to Ami for example:

Ami Rune #1: Ranger Instinct - Increases HP by 500, decreases MP by 100, increases vigor by 100, increases speed by 50.
Ami Rune #2: Sorceress Gene - Decreases HP by 500, nicreases MP by 150, increases magic by 200.

Only one rune per character can be activated at a time. When a rune is deactivated, their stats are restored to what they would normally be.

Concerning the Rift Shrine, are there any plans to repair the Rift Teleporter or remove it from the inventory upon reaching the third world map so that it's not a useless item?

Also, I'm not sure about any other items, but the Crystal Armor only boosts defense by 38 instead of the 92 in the description.

I should probably remove the Rift Teleporter from the inventory, yeah. I'll have an event remove it when Vahn wakes up in the hut after the incident occurs.

I'll correct the issue with that piece of armor too.
So I'm assuming there's definitely going to be one more update in the near future? Because I'd like to download this again. It's not that I deleted the version I already have, but thought that I should wait until a few more updates were released before continuing. Y'know, just to get the best out of the experience. =P

Oh, there is. You can see what I'm working on for the next update on the change log page.
And... so there IS! Ah-HA! Awesomesauce. Okay, well, I'm going to wait until THIS update is released until I download the game again. Then that should most definitely do unless there's some MAJOR BUG that has't been fixed yet for some reason that requires another update. I highly doubt that, but you never know...! Especially with me. Lol

Well I had pretty much squished all very noticeable bugs and such, but then I started adding things and... well, conflicts arose and I created new bugs. I think I've got them sorted out now though!

Will have the update ready sometime this week. It's proving to be a much bigger one than I intended, especially with the Rift Shrine changes.
In Lucid Depths you get Germinas boots, and the description says "No terrain damage" The character I've equipped them on (Oalston if that makes any difference) is still being hit by the poison floor tiles, so the boots don't seem to be working at all.
