Blackmoon Prophecy is now the #1 most viewed game of all time on RMN. Thanks to all of you for the views over the years, I appreciate it!
______________________________________________________

Do not edit the game without first applying the David patch. This is because some monsters have over 1000 attack/magic and 100,000+ HP. Editing without the David patch will reduce monster stats to rm2k3's default maximum values. Ignore this warning if you already have applied the David patch to your rm2k3.

What is Blackmoon Prophecy?
A Final Fantasy fangame that I started long ago in 2003 that is meant to emulate the first six entries of the series (though I mostly focus on FF4 and FF5 for gameplay and mapping, and FF6 for battle aesthetics). Aside from just being a fangame, Blackmoon Prophecy is also a tribute to Final Fantasy in the sense that I'm trying to put together many of the things I loved about playing RPGs growing up into this game. It's a love letter to retro gaming and our childhoods.

What's with this whole "Plus" deal?
The Plus! update adds DynRPG support by including several patches made using it such as faster ATB bars, a play time counter on the menu, and more. Additional content in the game includes a new section to the arena, a new optional dungeon, a few reworked cutscenes, and various bug fixes.

How long is the game?
My best guess is about twenty hours, but I'm not 100% sure. My testing sessions were broken up very often so I can't measure how long it took me to beat the game personally. I'm certain that it was over 15 hours though, and since I made the game I expect the average time to be higher than that for everyone else. My best guess is 20+ hours.

Do I need the RTP to play?
Heck no!

Are there any impressive custom systems, impressive features, etc?
Long story short, no. The early Final Fantasy titles were not known to blow our minds with amazing features (FF3 and FF5 were really the only ones that did in my opinion, and only because of their job systems).

There is no steal command, "throw" items are selected by going to items and choosing the item to throw, and "jump" isn't a command, but rather several different abilities that have jumping animations.

As a result, Blackmoon Prophecy is just a retro romp that just tries to recreate what we all used to feel as we'd trudge through all of the caves and dungeons of the early Final Fantasy games.

The most advanced aspect of Blackmoon Prophecy's gameplay is a simplified version of Final Fantasy 8's weapon upgrading system. A few minigames can possibly be included as well (auction house, betting on chocobo races, etc.) but this game is kept simple to emulate the simple games it is inspired by.

How many <insert something here> are there in this game?
Permanent Playable Characters: 12 (3 being optional/secret)
Temporary Playable Characters: 2
Equippable Items: 150+
Mandatory Dungeons: 30+
Monsters: 400+
Playable Hours: 20-30 hours (presumably)
Optional Dungeons: 10+
Towns: 20+
World Maps: 3

Blackmoon Prophecy 1.24 Update

I vaguely hinted that I was trying to work on a Blackmoon Prophecy "remaster" of sorts. I instead scaled back what I wanted to do because I didn't want it to take too long, so the remaster has instead been downscaled to a regular update. Here's what in the update:

Version 1.24
- Added a new path through the mountains west of the Mohadmal Pyramid as a secondary way to reach Mohadmal Dock.
- Added additional treasure chests in areas where I thought they were needed.
- Added an NPC in Garamonde who will give the player a new weapon in exchange for a Sunstone (it's somewhere in Sunleth Waterscape).
- Added an option to skip the intro sequence for returning players.
- Added optional boss: Nitemare. He can be found in a purple pot in the final dungeon and requires a bloodstone to draw out.
- Added optional boss: Vertumnus. Takes Yemaja's place in the Everlasting Tangle when the final dungeon becomes available.
- Corrected text in a lot of chest pop-ups as the text for some chests did not reflect what was actually inside due to many item renames over the years.
- Edited the names of many items to better reflect what they are (ie. "Broad" is now "Broadsword").
- Finally remembered to edit the version number in the game window's title! It was still saying version 1.21 prior to this update.
- Fixed a few typos.
- Minor tweaking of the stats of a few bosses.
- Renamed several skill names (ie. Frenzied Lancer is now Dragonstrike, Syphon Spear is now Lancer, and so forth).
- Removed Dragon's Courage, Dragon's Devotion, and Dragon's Resolve from Vahn's ability list.
- Tightened up corridors on several maps and cleaned up/redid some areas that I thought looked subpar.

As usual, you can find the updated version of the game in the downloads.

Final note, this does not change the overall experience of the game and is mostly just a QoL update (the new bosses were added on a whim at the last minute). If you were not a fan of Blackmoon Prophecy before, this update won't change that.

Exciting, but ultimately pointless.

Shinryu is in the Genesis Obelisk, but it's not a dungeon on the world map. The story will take you there, no worries!
OK. I've finished the game, and I have to ask, probably the stupidest question.

What is NEW GAME+? I've started playing it, but it just a repeat of original game.
Is there going to be something new to it? And if yes, how much new stuff is there?
Because at this moment I don't feel like replaying it, yet.

Nah, New Game+ is pretty much just the game from the start again with all experience and items retained.
This game is so awesome. Being totally like FFIV(II SNES), this game is good, as with the old FF titles for the NES and SNES.

The game even has a good new story, which really talks about the old titles (Crystals references).

It is good to see good fan-made games, even though they aren't official titles, because they should. Good Job :)
I have to say, this is a highly ambitious game and I am enjoying it immensely. I do have a couple of complaints though, none should be terribly difficult fixes, though they probably will be tedious. First
Vahn can evidently fly.
Also the music doesn't loop, although that's a really minor issue.
Finally my biggest complaint, the game doesn't have a consistently walking speed. He walks as fast as the last event and it's kind annoying.
Still, it's a good game.
Hi there peeps im new in the forums and i love FF , i have a question when i open the game it goes full screen after that a white windows appears and then a black one. Is that supposed to happend? Did i do something wrong or i need to do something ? . Im using windows 8 in my sis's Pc so it doesnt have the RTP installed xd.

me again im a pain in the balls sorry. not sure where to write game edit ideas. im only about level 7 or 8 about to head into the waterway path back to the dragoon hq to speak with the lord and ive noticed that spells cast by enemies pretty much one shot player characters up to this point is that really intended? do npc's have mana pools cuz some over spam spells like the boss at the end of the water way he spams his aoe water spell and kills me in 4 turns or i use healing items or spells and we are locked till i run out. grinding seems pointless due to the gigantic amount of xp needed per level and the small jump in stats feels pretty useless as it is.

This isn't a consistent issue and has only happened to a select few people, and I never personally encountered it. I can't really explain why that happens. As for any possible fixes, they aren't happening for... who knows how long, as I'm busily working on the sequel. Plus I outright HATE RPG Maker 2003 these days and don't really want to touch it. :p

I think it's a compatibility issue in Windows 8. I've never run that OS (I'm on Windows 7), but I think there's been a discussion about it on the forums somewhere before. A solution should be pretty easy to find.

Some balancing issues crept up over time from the game's horribly long development time. The boss you're speaking of, I don't recall it hassling too many players and it sounds like you're at the appropriate level. It's been years since I have touched that part of the game, so my mind is extremely fuzzy trying to recall it. Thomas Stout's LP could be of use. He's been through the game 2-3 times over the last two years.

was terribly bad luck... the third time around i destroyed it. now im having the same issue with the archeron leader on the eternal blue lol he spams x-magic 2-3 turn wipe. the games really good but spell balancing is rough.

Yeah, the first several hours suffered from me taking ten years to finish the game. :p

It does balance out though, I promise! Play your cards right and you'll be laughing at every feeble attempt by an enemy to damage you later on.

I would learn White with Elaina before fighting them it makes it much much easier, also use Dragon Force with Vahn.
Odd...I had gotten an odd error about a missing beach file. It triggered when I was about to enter into a battle on the bridge south of the Aether cave. I tried to replicate it but no luck. o.o

On another note, Atomos is harder than I had expected o.o

Fucking bridges. I thought that was fixed long ago.

... stay off the bridges.
Only happened once. I tried it again on that bridge and other bridges and never happened again.
I had to download the fonts the RPG Maker program uses to get the in-game text to display correctly. Fontfix didn't help and I spent hours looking for a solution to no avail. Perhaps this is common knowledge but I thought I would post this in case anyone else has trouble.

Very much looking forward to playing this!

Definitely not a common problem. Not sure what happened there, and that's never been reported before since the font fix patch included with the game is the "official" one that was made years ago to fix font issues.
Picked this up few days ago and have been enjoying it. Ran into a problem though, and I can't seem to figure out how to fix it. I just finished the hillsdale undergound passage dungeon, killing the boss and then looting the boxes afterwards. Suddenly, my walking speed in the game world has slowed to a crawl, like by half or more.

I figured maybe it was a temporary thing so just kind of dealt with it and continued the game. Walking as slow as molasses on the world map and in cities/dungeons, I played up through faluhd castle, etc. After leaving the village of organa, there's a cutscene with the party walking and talking, and even in the cutscene Vahn's walk speed was ridiculously slow and the other npcs all walked off screen during the cutscene since they seem to walk at the normal sprinting speed still. I figured maybe the entire game broke, so I started a new game just to test, and on a new file, Vahn sprints around no problem.

Loaded up my regular save and same thing, Vahn still walking extremely slowly. Any idea how to fix this? Everything else works fine. Battle speeds are normal, and riding a chocobo on the world map is regular speed also.

Edit: Update to my problem. I continued playing in spite of the slow walk speed problem. Later in the game, after the chocobo escape scene at surgate Vahn's walking speed fixed itself. Now he moves around at proper speeds, and all is well (and a whole lot more enjoyable to play). Don't know what caused it, but I'm just glad it's now working.

A few people reported that in the past, but many didn't. I'm not sure why it happened to some and not to others. I can only guess it was from RPG Maker 2003's weird event processing speeds or something. Glad to know that it fixed itself, and kudos on soldiering on that far with such a poor walking speed!
Well, I finished the game. Wanted to stop in and say job well done, I really enjoyed it. I finished all of the optional content as well except for the 2 platinum giants in berona research lab, and the omega weapon. Both fights I just can't figure out a way to survive more than a few turns, since they just chaincast unresistable aoe damage for 6000+ every round, dramatically more incoming damage than Ami could replenish, even with the party at level 99.

I'll be looking forward to part II once it's completed!
