Sacred Reviews: DotAgumon's Adventure

Introduction

I'll admit that I've been largely sitting on my review for this project for a long time. Mostly because I found it a bit difficult to pin down my feelings on DotAgumon's Adventure to a certain extent. After all, this game isn't really meant to be a game in and of itself, but a mini game for a much larger project whose status is entirely unknown to me.

Story

There is not really a story in the game.

As you can see, there really isn't a story to be had in this game, something even the developer admits to. Though, it is pretty understandable why a mini game would be devoid of plot. After all, I don't usually associate meaningful story progression to playing card games and what have you in other games like Final Fantasy 8 or Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

Gameplay

On the gameplay side of things, DotAgumon's Adventure is a rather simple affair where the player starts on the left and needs to move to the right. Of course, the game does include a few tricky spots where enemies are placed so close to the edge of a giant gorge that it can be a tad difficult to land on the other side safely. Though there are only a few instances where this creeps up in the game and is such a minor issue that it's barely worth commenting on in my opinion.

On the other hand I find it hard not to be a bit frustrated with how the game responds to inputs. The most obvious of these issues is that you need to hold down the jump button in order to reach the ultimate apex of DotAgumon's jump which feels awkward in the face of so many games where you simply need to tap the jump button in order to achieve the same effect. Though, I suppose I can't get to upset about this issue in particular because the tutorial stage mentions it. On the other hand, I can get upset about how buggy this game is.

Bugs

I'm not entirely sure if I should consider the odd bug that constantly creeps up in this game an experience breaking bug or a game breaking bug. On one hand the bug doesn't prevent the player from advancing to the next stage or anything, but on the other hand the bug does prevent the player from launching DotAgumon's fire attack as well as allows the player to come into contact with enemies without dying.

Conclusion

DotAgumon's Adventure is a brief but buggy mini game that really struggles to bring anything of interest to the table. As such, I really don't recommend checking this mini game out. Especially since the bulk of your enjoyment will probably come from getting the game to glitch out.
