So far so good. The demo starts off a bit slow: 1-1 in particular lacks a bit of punch. Its decent as-is, but being the first level of the game you might want to spice it up a bit to leave a more lasting impression. The rest of World 1 was pretty fun, and World 2 is my favorite so far (loved the wood arches).

The only real detriment to the game I can think off is that few of the levels stand out from each other: The levels' design feel solid but they're missing spontaneity. I feel like the current game is lacking in the old "floaty" levels. Like 1-6 in Mario 3. There may be such later on, but establishing levels like that in the early worlds is good for the game as a whole.

  • Since a lot of the levels seem to adhere to more straightforward platforming, I'd strongly recommend not sticking to the default Mario 3 music. In my opinion, the choice of music track is one of the most important aspects of level aesthetics. It can dramatically alter the feel of a level; fleshing it out more. The castle levels in particular felt very strange when they just had the Fortress music over again.

  • A speed of 1 for auto-scrolling stages is too slow. 1.2 or 1.3 is better. (If I remember right, 1.2 is precisely a goomba's walking speed and 3 is Mario's walking speed.)

  • One of the events in World 2's fortress keeps switching off the music in the first section.

  • 3-3 was really good. I haven't seen a lot of people utilize foreground stuff like that.

  • And on that note: 2-Star. That's probably my favorite out of the demo. The early worlds can handle more challenge like that!

Other than that, this looks to be a great game in the works! I'm really digging the castle layouts!
Thanks for playing, Isrieri, and thanks again for the suggestions. I've been trying to find music that would work for this game. Initially I was looking for something that sounded similar to the SMB3 music, but now I'm thinking I might have to open up to other ideas. I want consistency in the soundtrack, so pulling from different Mario games doesn't quite work. It's tricky. In the end I might have to sacrifice consistency for awesomeness.

By the way, would you like to testplay the whole game? It's almost entirely finished now. I already did a testplay up to World 8, where a stupid mistake got me permanently stuck in the middle of the map.

Absolutely! I'd love to playtest it. Don't be apprehensive to sacrifice consistency in the music. From my experiences playing other people's levels, its almost always a point in the level's favor. Save if it doesn't fit the level's "theme" I suppose. Using Doom music is probably not a good idea.

But PM me the game whenever you have a chance: I just found a load of free time for this weekend and I'm itching to play something fun.
