Emi has come through the Manor relatively unscathed, though it took her a while to get over what she experienced there. Three months have passed since then and on their way back from a successful exorcism she and her father decide to stop at a lodge while heading home through the Nirelog forest.

When Emi wakes she finds herself alone in a haunted forest, her father missing. All she has with her is a backpack, a bottle of water and a flashlight.

What is this?

This is the next of the Map Madness series. It is a collaborative effort where people join up and make a map using the graphics specified. The maps are then made into a game that can be enjoyed by all who play.
The focus of this collaboration is Atmosphere.

How do I join?

Sing up in the comments below, make your map and send it to me (Liberty) before the 20th of October. I will then 'sew' it all together into a coherent game, ready for release on Hallow's Eve.

Rules?

There will be, in the interest of getting this done in time, a few extra rules this time around.

- You must use REFMAP graphics to create your map. (You can edit them if necessary but use them as the base of your maps. You can find a link to them at the bottom of this page.)
- Each map must be no larger than 30x30. This makes it easier for me to fit them together.
- You can only have one exit on any side of the map, but no more than four and no less than one.
- No extensions. If it's not ready, then sadly, too bad.
- I don't mind if you add a small puzzle or something, but remember that each map is going to be part of a whole game so don't go overboard. (I'm looking at a few of you guys from last time)
- Atmosphere is the name of the game.
- If you need switches or variables, let me know ASAP.
- Do not use anything in the Database - this means no default battles, no monsters, no items, no skills or animations of any kind.
- Keep in mind this is a forest.
- Please no movie files. Parallaxes and overlays are fine, but keep in mind the grid if you do decide to parallax. >.<;

Submissions?

When submitting please do the following:
- Make sure all sounds, character sets, pictures, parallaxes and chipsets used are in the folder. These include RTP sounds that you might have used.
- Zip up the whole game folder and send me a link to it. Lockers are ideal for this.
- All maps must be in by the 20th of October, Midnight GMT.

I have a question...

What's with the names of these events?
They're from something my cousin wrote just before he killed himself. So, yeah, these are sort of homage to him in that respect. I do hope no-one minds.
The here and now of yesterday
Where end Time's saddest songs
Apon the brow tomorrow clear
We, thoughtless, dream along
And through the truth of never-been
Sit, watch as time flies by
For left, unspoken words I hear
And empty lyrics lie

Where can I get the graphics?

Right here, my friend, right here~

Done~

Ah, just made it in the nick of time!
So the project is finally done - and within the month, too! Yay!
I just got through a run with Decky and Indrah as play testers (hats off to you, dearies~<3 ) and fixed up a lot of the issues that were still prevalent. That said, there might be some things I missed, so let me know if you run into anything that seems out of place.

Now, I'll probably add up the walkthrough and credits list after I've had some sleep. It's been a long night. Enjoy the game and much thanks to all who were a part of Forest Map Madness this year. Keep your eyes out for the Director's Cut (which will contain the proper Father sprites as well as some extra content).

A friendly reminder that there's still some time to join the fan fun contest. Just check the Fan Fun page. Voting will happen on the 7th, so keep your eyes peeled for that, too.

Just finished this. I didn't do absolutely everything that I could, but it was something of a melancholic experience all the same. I seem to recall a mapping error where I was on top of a ceiling tile, but I forget where it was. The only other thing I wish to note is, who the heck is Lenne "tay" in the credits? I presume you mean "Tau", but...
I, uh, updated last night with fixes to things like the some passability issues and sequence-breaking (you now have to do both the cat and the hunter to be able to find the name-giver).
Including the credits spelling error. ^.^ (Sorry Tau~)

I'm glad you got a melancholy feel from the game. It was the atmosphere I was aiming for this time around. The last one was more 'where are we? what is this? scary ;.;'. This one was more 'daddy? where are you ;.;'.
^.^
Hopefully the next one will be a bit more of a cross between the two.

(Sorry Tau~)

He got to you to Liberty :(. Tay, always taking everything dear to me away.. That bastard!!

XD
Don't worry, I showed him the door and gave you your proper credits.
I should probably post a credit list and walkthrough today. :P
Hi! So, I finally got my computer back and the first thing I did was to play this. xD ...What can I say? I loved it! I agree that this one had a more melancholic feeling to it, and overall it was a more regarding experience than THANOY was. The only thing could be improved a bit is the ending because it doesn't quite measure up the emotion of Emi's quest for her father.

Anyway, here are some stuff that I found odd while playing:
-Shouldn't the door open when the father enters the house at the intro?

-In the map named 'North' you can walk under the foliage of the trees in some points. I actually spent several minutes there thinking that it was some kind of hidden mini-maze or something. >_<

-When you call the menu in those maps whit lightning strikes, you can see the bolts over the menu. Also, sometimes the splash on the water get stuck. It would be a nice idea to reset them.

-You should add a little sparkle to the Axe. I never thought of picking it up at first because there are other tools in various maps that you can't pick up, and I ended up lost for some time. xP

-On the map where you find the key you can walk over the corners of the walls on the bottom.

-When you pick up the fish on Deckiller's map Emi's text lacks a window and a little spark can be seen swimming around afterwards.

-When you pick up the fish in Tau's map, Emi's text doesn't have a window again and the light never comes back on after the message.

-On my map, please delete the variable99 command from all the graves except Alfador's.

-You can still call Alfador and see his final scene all over again after giving him all the fish.

-On Nessy's map you can walk under the trees and over the ledge on the left-down corner.

-Please feed the fish? ...To the cat? xD

-Soon you'll see what we did? ...What?

-What's the mystery empty slot in the menu for? xP

-Why is there a lonely zombie in one of the maps? xD

-I looked all over the forest for the unicorn until I found it by accident. Maybe Alfador should give you a hint of its hideout or something.

Also, I made a title screen thinking the game didn't had one... xD
Which version did you download, if you know? Some of those issues sound like ones I may have fixed, though I'll look into them all again. I can always count on you to find anything I've missed~ ^.^

I'm glad you enjoyed it, though, and I'll agree that the ending was quite rushed - I literally had about 15 minutes to upload the damn thing before the contest ended, so...
At least I got it in on time. And yes, the Director's Cut will have a better ending, just like it did in THaNoY. (Though I have no idea of anyone even played through to that ending yet. Maybe it's not better. >.<; ) Keep in mind that I'm waiting for the design of Conall to be finalised before I start that.

Also, I find it odd that you couldn't find the Unicorn. The ghost archer tells you he's in a cave (it's added to your notebook) and once you find the fish for the cat (technically he can't eat the fishies, since he's dead and disappears after smelling them, leaving you with them) a sparkle point appears on the wall of the entrance where he is. I'll see if I can't make it easier to see, though. I think I might have it set to transparent. :P

As for the last spot, there were a total of eight items: (Spoilers!)
- Bloody Key
- Lantern
- Fish/Bucket
- Matches
- Axe
- Guitar Pick
- Green-fletched Arrow
- Father's Spirit

Lastly, while that is a pretty cool title screen, Ocean also whipped one up for me last second (which is pretty awesome too~<3 ) I will add both to the images page, though, because why not? ^.^
It was WETSS_6 ...Yeah, I understand it was all made in a rush. I'll wait for the DC version. Oh, and I'll try THANOY later today! o/

The father's spirit was an item? I never bothered to look at the menu after he joined me I put him in my backpack, apparently. xD

Well, yeah, but like with the Axe, I had already went to all the caves after the ranger gave me that clue but I couldn't find anything, so I was like, Is there any other cave that I missed? <_> It was only after I spoke to Alfador that I combed every map again and found the hidden entrance in the cave... Upon inspection, the sparkle is set to the same level as the hero, so it gets covered by the ceiling.
Dang. I'll get on changing the sparkle to above hero.
Oh, yeah, I set it up so that Alfador became relevant. Testers kept skipping him because the fish were hard to find, so... I made it so you'd need to find him. :\
Maybe I'll change the plot around a bit in the DC version, so that you have more reason to visit/complete his quest. I'll find a way~

I love what you did with my map, it made it seem so serene like :D

I'm thinking of a map that has a path. It leads an hilly island. At the top, there is a spyglass/telescope that overlooks a wide swath of territory. It's the "Isle of View", as it were. There will be absolutely, positively no attempt at the obvious wordplay here.

Well, that's my working concept for this, anyway.

Teleport the person to the bottom of a screen, with the new graphics above, and just do a 30x30 pan event. Then shift back to the old map.
Hey, the game looks pretty good so far, I can tell a lot of work went into it.

However, in this screen, I can get through some of the walls

Thanks for giving the game a try and I'm glad you're enjoying it~ Also, for pointing those issues out. ^.^
I have a question:
I can't leave this screen
http://i46.tinypic.com/2cnb5ok.png

I try to move back but I can't go through the doorway (after hitting the switch)
How do I advance the story?
I realised that issue today (and another >.<; )
Save, and I'll upload the fixed version. Seems I still missed a few bugs. Sorry about that. ;.;
Hi again Liberty.

Now when I walk into the screen before that one (the big palace), I get a screen saying that "night2" cannot be found.
http://rpgmaker.net/media/content/users/1013/locker/night2.png

Paste that file in the Panorama folder. >.<;
I'll leave off adding a new download until a bit later when I've fixed a few other things (minor issues). Thanks for the report~
I finished it.
Very nice. I love the atmosphere on those screens.
The story is great and I like how it is revealed piece by piece as you complete sections.

The fog was beautifully done. Also the pumpkin scene where the terrain changes stands out. That one nearly gave me a heart attack when my MSN made a really loud send effect.

My only complaint is that there are some things that are not explained. Like the "FEED THEM" sign + the hut outside there. And the fake letter.
Also there were a few times when the lightning struck when the I was switching screens and it messed up the fadeout. Also the water sometimes glitches out from the lightning. But those are really minor.

I'd give the game a 9.5/10
Thanks for making it!

Also, are you planning on making more of these games? If so, what will the 'theme' be, or are you undecided/not saying?

I may have found a bug, but
---SPOILERS ALERT--
So when I was going to meet the Unicorn, I think that the entrance to the path to the unicorn doesn't exactly match up with the glittery star. I think it's 1 space below it. I could be wrong of course, but I remember thinking this when I played along.

Thanks for the feedback! Have you considered submitting a review? :D
I wrote everything that I wanted to (around 2 pages in the small editor) but apparently it was longer than the 300 character requirement, but too short. I am not going to talk about random stuff that doesn't matter in order to meet the moderators 'standards'.

So, no.
So, I was wondering. Why this game doesn't list us mappers as "developers" like Thanoy does? It would be nice for people to be able to see these games in our games list... Well, actually, I think it would be better for us to be listed as "others" instead, since our roles in the actual development for both games was minimal and so there's no confusion with the games we do develop.

Am I making any sense? I'm still half asleep. xP
