Looks like I have someone on board to make some music for the game. Some of the game music will consist of video game like re-cuts of classic rock ensembles, however the main themes for towns and whatnot would be a bit obnoxious to listen to if they were the same well known rock tracks over and over again.
I plan on using RTP edits for chars because I simply don't have the time/patience to make so many of my own. However if there's an ambitious spriter out there interested in joining the team feel free to drop me a line.

yeah it's def hard to have really high resolution images/backgrounds with pixels. i think if you can find someone talented enough it isn't impossible to find a pixel artist who can match the art as close as possible. lotta talent out dere.
i suggest places like pixeljoint and various pixel artist hangouts.

Will do, jeez now I get to be the guy pestering an artist to do work for me o_O
If you have a little more patience, you can use the same RTP sprites for NPCs and that, but give them a "thick" cartoonish black outline (that would make them less contrastant with your great tiles too). That alone, and maybe a contrast retouch I think, would pimp them a little :P.

Not a bad idea, may give that a try. Was also going to give all the "Villagers" pallet swaps so they would match each village. It'd be nice if I could find a decent pixel artist to collaborate with me but I'm not counting on it, so I definitely have a plan B
