C_C Review: Delila is Awesome

Halloween Flop is a game created for the All Hollows Event, back in october. I decided to play this due to request by the creator, and the charming artwork on the main page.

---Story---
Halloween Flop poses a short and simple story.
You're looking for a thief who stole many important items which could cancel Halloween. What drove the story for me was the characters. Most npcs have a semi-unique charm to them, and I enjoyed all the dialogue between the 3 main characters. I also found no glaring typos in the dialogue, and enjoyed reading what the game gave me.

I have no legitimate criticism as of the moment. You could say that the dialogue raddles on a bit in some scenes, but I never found this too much of an issue.

---Gameplay---

The game uses a Free Turn Battle System. Every fight is a 3 on 3 match against the monster troops and the PCs. There are 3 elements. Each element has a character who is strong against one and weak against the other. All fights revolve around exploiting elements and keeping your party members alive.

This is a very fun battle system, and there's no skill/attack spamming to be found. My main problem was the learning curve. All 3 characters have 5 abilities at the beginning of the game. Each ability is fairly well thought out, and you're expected to use quite a few of them for the first fight. I could definitely see some people having trouble picking up this game and getting used to the gameplay.

Fortunately, this fixes itself after a few more fights. Most monsters after that range from mildly difficult to fairly easy. If this game was a tad longer, I would suggest making a boss that deals very little damage but can only be killed by using certain abilities. I would also tone down on the skills a player must learn at once.

---Music---

It's not bad. All of the music is MIDI, which fits very well with the theme of this game. I found myself enjoying most of the tracks. I'm not sure if this music is custom or not, which can affect the rating. For now...

---Graphics---

All of the graphics have a retro feel to them. While I'm not the retro type of dude found commonly on this site, the graphics in and of themselves are fun and consistent. All of the artwork used in this project is drawn by the creators, and I found many of the facesets to be charming.

While some of the battlers were a little weird in proportions, I must say that the graphics added a lot to my enjoyment with this project.

✰✰✰✰ 1/2

Overall, I rate this a ✰✰✰✰ 4-star.

After the player gets used to the battle system, they'll find a very fun gem. I hope this was useful to the creators. If you want my thoughts in video format, please check out my feedback video.

Cheers. :)

Thanks so much for giving this game a go, not too mention the video and review for it. We're both really glad you enjoyed the characters, art, and gameplay.

The music is sadly not custom. It all mostly relates to some sense of what the battle is parodying. One of the more blatant examples is the Charlie's Angels theme for the fight against "Peter's Angels."

Some notes from the video:
-The reason Bobby is low on attacks is because of her character personality. Perhaps it isn't the best idea to devalue battle proficiency over character integrity. A hard line to decide between.

-On that line, yeah, Jack in Box is very luck based in a game with set damage otherwise. It does, however, have the highest damage potential of every player skill. Attacking an enemy that is already had full health can take some of the risk out of it.

-The reason it's actually better to have Candle Magic be Magic than Astral is that Astral is not strong against anything. Astrals have a defensive advantage over Undead, not offensive.

-(6:00) The slimes actually have a change to essentially do nothing on their turn that decreases as their hp does. So they should start out easy and get harder as the fight goes on, but I can see RNG was hating on you a bit.

-(7:00) We both agree that we messed up on Magic Plus, heh. I don't know why my mind said the math makes sense and it's worth it. I guess the big numbers fooled me.

-(10:58) 120, that must have been a buffed Candle Magic. I did make sure that there was no enemy skill that could one-shot you, /unless/ it was a weakness hitting move when they have a buff.
Oh, and for Rusty Nail (the skeleton), he never has any punctuation. He's more making sound than actually talking.

-(13:25) Delila actually starts with whatever BP you finished the previous fight with. In hindsight, I might have considered giving her at "if she has less than 30, then she starts with 30."

-(14:09) An in-battle retry option is an interesting idea. Hmm...

-(14:25) We actually had a sprite with Agatha's hat that we completely forgot about! (and lost in a computer transfer).

-(15:16) : ) We actually discussed in February (after ignoring the game for a bit) that the fact Easter and April 1st fell on the same weekend was a clear sign that that was when this game had to release. We then went back to ignoring it until this past week, heh.

The next step for us is to definitely take what we learned with this and apply it to a system with growth. Limiting stats and removing a lot of RNG certainly makes balancing easier.

Once again, thanks a lot.
