Sacred Reviews: Very Pink Game

Intro

"Very Pink Game" is a short adventure game developed by sheepherds using RPG Maker 2003 that shares a lot of similarities with "Melon Journey" by almondmelon. Albeit this game is even shorter and takes around 15 to 30 minutes to beat on your first playthrough depending on the order in which you complete certain tasks. In fact, I imagine you could trim the game down to under 10 minutes on a second playthrough, but I really don't feel like putting that assumption to the test at the moment since I'd rather focus on reviewing this game first.

Story
Summary

You play as Ivy, a young girl, whose received a letter from an old friend asking for a meeting outside of town. A meeting you'd like to attend, but in order to do so you'll need to complete a few tasks first in order to get a "cool" punk claiming ownership of the park to move out of your way.

Comedy

The comedy in this game ranges from goofy characters to some truly awful puns.

Though considering the game's overall short length there really aren't that many jokes to be had in this game, but I do have a bit of soft spot for bad puns in small doses thanks to games like "Animal Crossing".

Gameplay

On the gameplay front this game is pretty simple. You simply run around town completing quests and collecting items from certain people in order to complete other tasks. The only real hold up is triggering certain dialogue sequences by talking to certain people first or performing certain actions first. Like you can't talk to the ghost hunter until you've visited the Spook Forest and collected a peach pie from one of the townsfolk.

If anything the only major downside I can offer this aspect of the game is that you can't run in this game which makes the process of completing these menial chores a bit more time consuming than I like, but at the same time this inability to run is a restriction imposed by RPG Maker 2003. So my frustration comes from being spoiled by more modern engines where you can hold the shift key in order to run between points in order to get menial side quests done as quickly as possible since merely walking around and interacting with non-player characters is only so engaging in my opinion.

Though oddly enough I also have a soft spot for these older tools since they were used back in the day to create a lot of forgotten fan games. And there is a certain charm to that kind of content irrespective of it's quality.

Graphics

The game utilizes entirely original art assets and is very pink in certain places. Albeit some of the buildings being black and pink makes me think of a certain character.

And hopefully I'm not alone in associating that color scheme with her. At any rate the assets are rather simple in their design, but are still enjoyable to look at.

Albeit certain characters do lie about their status of being invisible.

Sound

Sound wise the game is alright in my opinion, but there are a few sections where the absence of background music is notable. This includes both the game's title screen and Ivy's house.

Conclusion

"Very Pink Game" is a very short romp that can be easily completed in under 30 minutes whose comedic approach will probably keep most players mildly amused. So it's worth a play if your looking to kill a little time, but I can't imagine this game would stand up particularly well to repeated playthroughs since the game relies heavily on it's bad puns and weird characters to keep the player engaged enough to finish the game since Ivy's nature as a silent protagonist makes it hard to get particularly invested in her reuniting with an old friend otherwise.
