Putting it down for good

It's been in my head for a good long while to just up and cancel this. Why? Outside of having, like, three different identity crises, the thing I can't seem to get over is why this game would exist in the first place in relation to the story.

Spoilers below that attempt to explain this point:

It's been two years since the events of Matsumori Days. If one recalls the end of that game, Sataro and crew were about to face-off against Chojiro and Vatma. The presumption this game makes is that they loose and get thrown into some kind of inter-dimensional prison for their efforts. Rasuna was able to escape this fate, and Chojiro's been looking for her since.

Now, my issues with this plan.

Point 1: Is it reasonable for Sataro and crew to loose again? I dunno. It just seems so unlikely that, after fifty or so years, that they essentially haven't learned anything.

Point 2: Even if we can assume that Sataro and crew loose, Chojiro/Vatma don't come across to me as individuals that would throw them into an inter-dimensional prison. They'd kill them. The exception would be Rasuna. For one, she's something of a deity of her own right, and cannot die. However, I imagine she can fall unconscious for a time. Enough time to let Chojiro do whatever it is he must in order for him to take what power he wants from her? Maybe!

Point 3: So, let's say that Sataro and crew die in the fight and, since we want to have a game, Rasuna escapes. If I want the gap between worlds to disappear (and I kinda do), and players defeat Chojiro/Vatma, who the heck is left to repair the gap? Okay, Rasuna probably could, but only in her adult form. How she got her adult form was very much undefined from a lore perspective, but, there was some intention to have her transform at some point in this game. Though, the presumption with this particular point is that the people who would know the process of getting her into her adult form would be dead. Unless Masako knows? Eh, maybe she does.

Point 4: Darigaaz, Masako's inclusion in this game. I know I wanted some kind of "Goho X Masako" thing going, but, I dunno. Their personalities may be compatible, but, their interests are worlds apart. How relevant is that to this game? Well, one of the things I wanted to do was have Chojiro take control of Goho and Joruri, and set them up as guards to the inner chamber in a sick sense of irony. There was supposed to be this heart-breaking battle where Masako (if players get her) fights Goho and Joruri alone, but, I dunno if I can really pull off the effect I want. Particularly since Masako has been a staunch stoic for her entire screen-time, and to have her suddenly burst out in emotion, the "show, don't tell" advise come to mind, the whole situation just screams "NO".

...says the guy that canceled Stonesearch and Home Sweet Home. My poor Masako cameos!

More serious response:

I can see where you're coming from. I mean, it's not like building a game from almost ground-up isn't a foreign concept. Such was the case of Matsumori Days, Arbiters From Another World, and Uchioniko. This game, though? I just can't work on the thing anymore. This is, in part, because I have no clear, specific idea of what I want this game to do. Another part is because I'm sick of having this game looming over my head, and I just want it to get out of the way.
I'm... not disappointed in you, I have to say.

You gave a clear, very logical reason as to why you have problems with going on. The better response would have been solving those issues, but what's worse is trying to juggle this and all your other responsibilities then fail miserably, at all of them.

It's just tempered enthusiasm on your part, as far as I'm concerned. You can do whatever you set your mind to!^^ Just, not every one of them at the same time, cuz it will drive you nuts.

At the same time, don't forget, no matter what happens, you LIKED doing this for a long while. You can always relearn liking it, the ability to do so won't go away.

On a level I'm saying you should work on Heartache, yeah^^ Doesn't make all the above a lie though:3 And in the end, should you need to stop doing that too, I'm not stopping you.

Just give a good reason like this one^^

My old friend~ Good luck!^~^

diabolica is in shambles right now too, so i mean who am i to talk

But seriously, it's okay, I am going to go under the assumption that your next endeavor will be based around this series/universe?

Aw, man...

At least I've learned about them after learning about this game, so there's that. And, as Dozen said, at least you had a good reason for stopping, and not just being lazy.

I'm still gonna go though the other two games. That plan hasn't changed. Just... delayed.

Still though. Aw, man...

You can do whatever you set your mind to!

You keep telling me this, and the thing that always pops into mind is the old in-joke where my eldest brother was omnipresent (he's been to more places than the rest of us), my second-eldest brother was omniscient (he was a philosophy major), and I was "left" with being omnipotent.

I'm not quite sure what you're referring to here? I don't have any characters to finish, nor do I see me wanting to make another. The only "work" I have left there is updating the ID roster on the official site, and generally helping people out whenever I can.

I haven't thought about that, to be honest. This game was supposed to be the last entry. The one where there is no more story to tell. The one where the dimensional gap gets closed, and the Arbiters recede to... wherever. Not before Mina pays back her debt to the Matsumori Days crew, and the crew of Konae, though. Or, you know, something like that.

Funny story, though. As I typed that, I seem to recall a sci-fi game (maybe it was a short story?) where Mina traveled all over the galaxy (universe?), and feels it's time to go back to Earth. Earth is generally off-limits, but, this is Mina. She has the titular Arbiter's Code that grants access, and generates quite a bit of trouble by having it.

Any help there could mean everything now....

I've been thinking about this game a bit. One of the ambitions I had for it was to be a stand-alone game. To have players not necessarily need to play the other games in the series to understand what was happening here. I was pretty stubborn on this point, so, there may have been a sense of trying to pack too much information in an extremely limited amount of space.

Would setting up this game so that's more reliant on having played the other games of the series actually be easier to make, though? I'm not sure how relevant that question even is. The issues I listed above would still exist, wouldn't they? So, unless I can alleviate those issues on my own, or if I could talk them over with somebody (*forced cough*), this is gonna stay pretty solidly "Cancelled".

*Edit: I think the main thing to ask is "What sequence of events could occur at the end of Matsumori Days that would allow this game to occur?" I'm not satisfied with how the events pan out as-is, so...

...I had a thought of having the Arbiters be in the process of awakening Rasuna's adult form so that the Door of Possibilities (and, ultimately, the inter-dimensional tear) would be sealed. In this case, Sataro and crew would have beaten Chojiro/Vatma. Not quite sure how Konae and crew might fit into that plan, though.

Okay, maybe my crappy mood of late had more of a say in this decision than I would have liked to admit. That's not to say that I'm getting back on this right now. All I really know right now it that whenever it is that I do get back to this, the plan is to do a day-at-a-time approach.
