Just thinking out loud, over here

A lot of things were cut from this game for being too overambitious for it's own good. Then there's the Case Notes. Here was an item that served as reference material for players either as a refresher or to help along players completely new to the series. The Release Something version of this game has it mostly working (if I recall, at least one entry had an error in it), but, obviously, it didn't make it into the (currently?) final version. Why was it cut? It's one thing if I said that I would fill it out later, once things are actually written in-game. Which I'm almost certain that I did, at one point. However, but to cut it entirely?

I remember wanting to include some kind of side-mission structure. This, too, never happened. I won't claim to be able to create good side-stuffs for players to do, but, I probably should have at least tried to make something. The question of "why" props it's ugly head yet again.

Perhaps the whole "Do the game in the style of a Kolchak, the Night Stalked episode" idea was held too highly for the game's own good? Like, if you play this game to an ending (to be fair, the differences between the two are minimal), the reasoning why the story would never be able to be printed is the same as Kolchak. The influence drifted into game-progression as well: Kolchak was a TV show, and could afford downtime only for brief moments.

To be fair, I need to update this anyway, if only to fix the errors that Red_Nova PMed to me before his review went live. So, if I'm going to make significant changes, the next update should have them. I guess the biggest question in my mind is what I need to do to send off this series with the semi-traditional rainbow-colored "Complete!" text a smile.

Thinking back a bit, and for full disclosure, I did not wait for feedback from my playtesters. Whither or not they would find the same errors Red_Nova found (if not more) wouldn't make his experience any better, and there's a very good probably be in the same position I'm in now. Minus the review.

At least Dozen responded to me, though, she was surprised at my sudden request. I... sorta skipped the part about asking if they were still okay with testing, so, okay, my bad on that part. Maybe I should have sought elsewhere (ie: a request for testers blog) for help? I dunno. There's probably lots of things I should have done differently in regards to quality assurance.

Sorry about all this rambling. I'm... just figuring out what the heck I want to do with this.

I think the best position of thought to be in with this game is that it was an experiment in how the story was relayed. Your Mileage May Vary comes to mind in this respect. Also, it's not like the game utterly failed at everything.

If you don't mind, I have a couple of suggestions:

- If it's possible, add in an enemy bestiary. As an investigative journalist, I feel like it would make sense for Konae to keep a record somewhere, and since the default battle system doesn't have any indication that you're striking the enemy's weakness aside from higher damage, so looking this info up would make players feel more like a journalist.

- Perhaps bring back the case notes. The game is pretty linear, so it probably won't be required, but again, a journalist would have something like that. You could take the opportunity to write the objectives from Konae's and/or Nanami's point of view to build up their character(s) without forcing extra cutscenes on players.

The Case Notes use the CSCA Encyclopedia, which comes with a bestiary section. However, in an earlier build, the script threw an error in regards to Shrai's third (and last) entry in the database. Or, maybe it was his second entry? I forget. It was a while ago! I do recall that, since I wasn't using the bestiary at the time, I commented out the lines where bestiary information was recorded, and never saw the error again.

Story aside, if I do re-include Case Notes, I'll give a thought to also including the bestiary.

I had to re-write the entries to be the kinds of notes Shizu might make in her journal. As before, there's a few entries that I plan to update as players go along. Which, thankfully, the script is set up to do! Nifty!

I'm also thinking I can condense a few of the exposition pieces be journal entries. The information gathered via hacking most especially (ie: "Holy shit, this is a lot of info! Better jot down everything I can!"). I've done a short test of the script to see if it's compatible with Yanfly's Messaging system (it isn't, as far as I can tell), but otherwise haven't actually implemented anything yet.
