Holy shit – I didn’t even know about that secret at the beginning!

And you made Deckiller’s trail look like a complete cakewalk compared to how many times I died on it, Desmo360. X_x

And lol @ 10:54. ^^

I liked Deckiller's water bit. :/

My section would have been harder if the Feathers were in ? Blocks like they were originally. They needed to be on pedestals because of Divide by 0 error possibilities.

No no, divide by zero happens when you enter a pipe and a venus firetrap tries to shoot you. This was the mysterious 'Error 9' that happens when mushrooms fall in lava in stages with moving parts.

Well Des, now that my self insert is done tearing into you...it's my turn! This is my review of your LP, since you were hoping for some feedback and such.

To be honest, I think it could've been better in a lot of ways. You're willing to put the time and effort into making these videos, and that definitely shows, but some of your features aren't as strong as you might think.

First up, the webcam. This series really didn't need one. If you want to know whether you should use that or put in animations, it's definitely the latter. Sure, it can be a nice thing to have, but it doesn't actually add anything to a Let's Play like this. This isn't even one of those rage Mario games where seeing your frustration might've been funny. Instead, it only succeeds in blocking the top-right corner of the screen, and you didn't even move it during the times when Mario found his way up there.

Not only that, but the whole eye contact thing is completely unnecessary. The people watching the video aren't there to gaze intently at your face. They're watching the game! As should you be, since trying to make eye contact got you killed at least twice. Your overblown reactions didn't save it for me, either. It just looked like you were putting on a big show.

Next, your commentary. It needs some work. The vast majority of it is all related to you in some way. Your projects, your life, your butthurts, just you, you, you! There were times when you said you only talk about yourself because you've run out of things to say, but that's the problem right there! The one thing you weren't talking about was the game, right in front of you. Your most interesting commentary in this series was the insider stuff that other players wouldn't know. Everything else was just fluff and nonsense. Even worse, it negatively impacted your playing and made you miss helpful stuff because you were too busy trying to think of what else to say.

A Let's Player doesn't need to be commentating for every single moment. It's also okay to deviate from the subject of the game being played, but not in the way you handled it. Take a look at brickroad, for example. When he talks about something unrelated, he presents it like an anecdote. He makes it amusing or quirky; gives it something that justifies his saying it. With you, it's just "This is my life, and..........................yeah." Sorry, but it's not that interesting. It's very mundane. Most peoples' day-to-day is.

What your webcam and commentary ultimately did was make this The Desmo Show, and He Happens to be Playing a Game or Something. It largely served only to distract from what should've been the focus all along: the game. In your future LPs, I'd advise you to give the game your attention instead of trying to spout an endless stream of words. Use your webcam judiciously. Only use it for games where it adds to the viewers' experience.

Don't go getting discouraged, though. I'm just being brutally honest with you. Your videos do have quite a bit going for them. The little story you built at the end of each video was a nice touch. You're clearly willing to put in the effort to make these enjoyable. Just try to be more conscious of what you're doing and how it affects the end result. Things like...not making peoples' characters sound like whores. Y'know. That sort of stuff.
Thanks for the feedback, Hali! While being very discouraging, it did offer some useful advice that I will definitely apply in the future. Here's my feedback to your feedback:

First up, the webcam. This series really didn't need one.

I wasn't a fan of the webcam either. It set limits on how far I was able to take the editing, and also caused a few audio problems for me. This series was more or less a trial run for the webcam anyway, and I'll likely revert back to my handy, unobtrusive animations in the future.

Your overblown reactions didn't save it for me, either. It just looked like you were putting on a big show.

In post editing I did notice this as well; my reactions were a bit large, and that might have had something to do with being on camera. But I never inflated my reactions on purpose. What you saw was legit.

Next, your commentary. It needs some work. The vast majority of it is all related to you in some way.

This is the probably the most valuable bit of advice I'll take away from this. I'll admit that it is easier to talk about what I know; which happens to be myself. The issue with delving into deeper topics is that they distract me from gameplay. Perhaps I just haven't mastered the skill of multi-tasking yet.

A Let's Player doesn't need to be commentating for every single moment.

I disagree. Silent moments in an LP, while necessary at times, need to be short and rare. This is what I've learned from observing other LP-ers.

The Desmo Show

I disagree. My videos are uploaded to a YouTube channel, so they are technically a show, and Desmo is the producer.

The little story you built at the end of each video was a nice touch. You're clearly willing to put in the effort to make these enjoyable. Just try to be more conscious of what you're doing and how it affects the end result.

Congratulations on being the first to mention those! I was convinced that no one really cared for them, and I wasn't going to bother with creating them in the future. Thanks again for the honest feedback! Perhaps tomorrow I'll have enough time to crank out some bonus videos.

It depends on the kind of Let's Play you're trying to make. I don't watch a lot of LPers, but two of the big ones I do are polar opposites: PewDiePie and Cry. The former is loud and talkative, but the latter is quiet and reserved. One may have more widespread appeal than the other, but both have a high degree of success on YouTube. Cry wouldn't have over 1 million fans if he wasn't doing something right.

I figured it wasn't intentional. What I was pointing out here was that your webcam and commentary stole focus from the game, even though you didn't mean for them to. But you already see what I meant about those, so it's all good.

Have fun with all those push-ups.
Can’t wait for those pushups. ^^
