Animebryan's long awaited review

Super RMN World Review by Animebryan.

I start by saying that I didn't even know about this series until I found Super RMN Bros. 3 on here. I downloaded it & strived to conquer it. I enjoyed it, although there were quite a few moments of rage, but those of us 'Hardcore Gamers' that were raised in the NES era are used to this sort of difficulty. Anyway, after nearly completing the game (got all but the last 'impossible star') I was hoping that a Super RMN bros. 4/Super RMN World would come out sometime after. Unfortunately I have yet to learn how to fully understand the eventing process of making levels so I'm still to much of a noob to contribute any levels to such an awesome community series. While I maybe still a noob at making levels, I'm pretty confident at playing them. As of this review, I have beaten 8 different SMBX episodes; The Invasion 2, Princess Cliche, The Great Castle Adventure, The Great Empire, Super RMN Bros. 3, & Super Talking Time Bros. 1, 2 & 2.5.

As a completionist, I don't stop until every last star, exit & level is found. So when I heard that this game just recently came out, I had to download it & play it. I took notes of each level after playing them so I don't forget what each level was like. I should also point out that Link is my favorite character to play as & I always try to beat every SMBX episode entirely with Link, if possible. And thank you for setting a standard to where each level can be beaten with ANY character, even though it can be a serious struggle with Link at times. Since I played every level with him, this review is kinda biased toward Link players, thus the difficulty of some levels were more extreme for me than someone who plays as someone else. And now for the review.

HUB & Intro: I noticed you used the Mario 64 approach to the HUB & made levels in paintings. Awesome idea, especially since the whole concept of gathering stars in SMBX is based off that game, so it's only natural to do it that way. Adding an intro stage that teaches all the aspects of SMBX was a great idea. It's not all that useful to veterans of SMBX because we know pretty much all of the basics (except I didn't know Link could safely go over spikes & munchers by downstabbing). But this is a great idea for beginners who are playing this game as their first SMBX game. I noticed that the 4th intro area lets you walk away with unlimited leaf power-ups, which made it redundant to hide the leaf power-up behind the 4th locked door of the power-up area. Also, having Pyth tell the tale of Super RMN Bros. was pretty cool & informative, since I never knew about the development behind the first 2 RMN Bros. at first.

Gallery 1 - Renaissance:

Green Grass Galavant by Ratty524: Good starting level. Mot too easy but too hard either.

Garden of Delights by Isrieri: Nice looking level. Flowers were a nice touch. Didn't like the mad dash to the blocked pipe using the P-Switch. It's seems a little harder for Link, still got it though.

Shroom Lake by Deckiller: Mario 64's underwater theme was nice to listen to, good choice. Good mix of Water & Land areas.

Port of Adia by Davenport: Now this is a level that stands out. Had good music, awesome graphics & background. Definitely fun. However, I find that standing on the ships while they bob up & down to be nauseating (started to feel a little seasick, I'm prone to things like that from certain types of movement).

Pipe Platformer by DarklordKeinor: Loved the nighttime theme. Couldn't get up to a little spot with the green blocks with Link, but oh well. The one thing I liked about this level is that it provided a 1-up factory early in the game, rendering every other 1-UP opportunity later on completely dedundant. Thank you DarklordKeinor, thank you.

Mandrian Grid by nin8halos: Well now, this was definitely unique looking. Loved the jazzy remix music. Definitely fun to play.

The Hop by seiromem: Tricky level. Never did figure out how to get in that hidden area with the giant block. Loved the opportunity to acquire a Hammer Suit early.

The Nightmare Universe by pyrodoom: Interesting music. The all white color wasn't really all that scary, I would've gone with mostly black, but that's just me. Not too much of a fan of the 'no backtracking' setup.

Moleville Mines by halibabica: I love throwback levels, unlike some people around here *coughAncientNoobcough*, especially this one. Even the ability to hop on the mole's heads was accurate to SMRPG. Especially the throwback with the invisible 1-up block above the entrance, just like one of the hidden chests which can only be gotten by riding toad's head & jumping up onto the overhang above the door. The mini bob-ombs nearly got me the first time because I almost didn't notice it. I killed Punchinello so fast he fell off the screen before the Big Bob-omb dropped down. Awesome level.

Gallery 2 - Venetian:

Glazed Donut Road by Isrieri: Typical standard level. The Charging Chuck that surprises you in that underground area was cleaver.

The Scream by nin8halos: Interesting level. I was expecting the ghosts to have that 'ghost face' from the scream movies, but oh well.

Cloudy Climb by wildwes: Standard level. Nothing stood out (no offense).

Egg Factory by halibabica: First thing that comes to mind with the level name & theme: Death Egg Zone. The 1st half was fun, but the 2nd half was just a pain in the ass! I collected one of the cannon bases (resprited keys) in order to lower the shooting height of 1 of the cannons in order to hit a certain machine. But then it would fire in the wrong direction. Such a hassle. Boss fight was cool.

Simplicity by DarklordKeinor: Awesome background! Cool music too, sounded familar but can't seem to remember from where.

Shy Guys' Toy Box by seiromem: Now here's a fun looking level. I actually managed to reach the giant ? block with the Hammer Suit as Link. It was sorta like a puzzle. I had to freeze the shy guys coming out of the pipe at just the right times to get them into position. This level did have it's annoying moments though. Couldn't figure out how to reach that 3-up moon under the exit area, oh well.

Faron Woods by Davenport: Loved the red forest theme. Water graphics looked pretty cool, as well as the mushroom hills as well. I was disappointed that the 'Faron Woods' theme from Twilight Princess didn't play until the end of the level. I would've liked to hear it throughout the whole level, oh well.

Mario's Dream Land by Ratty524: For me, more like Link's Dreamland. Definitely a fun throwback level. It's a shame it was made to look black & white instead of color, but I guess it was meant to be a throwback to the gameboy versions though.

*Percy makes an appearance! Awesome!

Water Temple by Deckiller: The 1st of 5 Temples made by Deckiller. The Water Temple looked great. Awesome background. I managed to skip the 1st drain switch & just went straight to the basement draining switch & then to the boss. Boss fight was pretty sweet too.

Gallery 3 - Mannerism:

Gabon Plains by Isrieri: Nostalgia. Nearly identical to 3-7 from Mario 3. Good level.

Mr. Burns by halibabica: Reference to Mr. Burns from the Simpsons? Strange how a ice level is referred to as Mr. Burns. And I noticed the reference to Mr. L from RMN Bros. 3. Although I chose to continue as Link.

Opposite Day by Ratty524: Going in the opposite direction? Well, it's different to say the least.

Shy Guy Desert Raid by DarklordKeinor: Awesome background, cool music & just a really great level theme overall. And it's about time someone made a WORTHY prize for finding all the red coins (Hammer Suit). It was funny to have Link steal Iggy's bombs in mid-air while zapping him from a distance.

Mega Mole Mountain by seiromem: Goron Mountain theme, awesome music choice. This is one of my top favorite levels for one reason. This level provides not only a Hammer Suit but also a Tanooki Suit at the end as well. Any level that does that automatically gets an A+ in my book. Screw waiting until you beat the game to get a hold of those suits in the power-up room! I always came back to replay this level whenever I need them.

24 Carrot Gold by Kentona: A little frustrating but not too bad. I played as Link so all the coins where rupees for me. Even still, for a level named '24 carrot gold', I was expecting a lot more 'gold' colors. Maybe recolor the giant veggies to look like golden carrots or something. Maybe use yellow koopas more as well.

Forest Temple by Deckiller: The 2nd of Deckiller's 5 Temples. It was fairly challenging, but not too bad.

Forest of Cold Silence by masterofmayhem: Loved the idea of a icy forest for a level. The blocks of ice with rexes in them were funny. Loved the recoloring of the Roto-Discs. Music was a fitting theme. Added frost on top of blocks & platforms was a nice touch. Very cleaver hiding the Hammer Suit in this level.

Cloudsdale Sanctuary by pyrodoom: Awesome sky level. Loved the music remix too. Was one of the Sonic ending themes thrown in or was it Sky Sanctuary Zone I heard in there?

Mushroom Supernova by nin8halos: What a weird level. What's with the eyes in the mushroom hills? I'm curious about where both the level & boss music came from. Boss fight wasn't too hard.

Gallery 4 - Baroque:

Bridge Over the Horizon by masterofmayhem: Fortuna theme from SNES Star Fox, awesome choice. Nice bridge graphics by the way. Wasn't too hard.

Mushroom Heights by wildwes: Kelly saying that Mario's always high on mushrooms was funny. I always knew secretly Mario was a bad influence on children.

Ghoulish Ghastly Ghosts by Ratty524: Great music choice. I've heard it somewhere before but can't remember where. Nice background. Very cleaver idea with invisible blocks that appear & disappear. A bit frustrating though.

Flight of the Phanto Koopa by halibabica: Good music. Putting the phanto mask design on a koopa shell was genius. Had trouble reaching a high platform a little ways above the mid-point (destroyed most of the breakable blocks in that section) as Link. Boss fight was awesome.

Arid Acropolis by seiromem: Awesome level. That chanting in the background music, is that from the Great Moomba from Golden Sun 2?

Grave Mistake by DarklordKeinor: Awesome level as well. Love the graphics & enemy sprites. Great idea having headstones that produced enemies. Sweet, you used the best looking sprite for Dry Bones.

Riveting River Rafting by Isrieri: Good level. Fairly challenging.

Backin' Up by Kentona: What the heck is up with that music? So basically, take 'Opposite Day', add throwbacks like the slanted hilltops from Super Mario World, Giant Land from Mario 3, The Ice World from Mario 2, a Retro area like Mario 1 & make each colored ! block give a specific power-up like Super Mario World & that basically sums up this level.

Persistance of Memory by nin8halos: Decent level. Trees with clocks & melting clock platforms were a nice touch. Boss was a pain in the ass the first few times I fought him. But when I was either Fire or Hammer Link, he was just a chump.

Gallery 5 - Neoclassical:

Starry Night Over the Rhone by nin8halos: Love the nighttime theme. Even the coloring of the pipes is a nice touch. Jumping piranhas can be annoying at times. Good level overall though.

Aquatic Ascent by jackalotrun: Good music choice. Gravity defying water is always fun to play. Even the water filled elevator was an awesome idea. Awesome level.

Mr. Freeze by halibabica: First a ice level named Mr. Burns & now a fire level named Mr. Freeze, both with the Mr. L theme, I sense a pattern here. Anyway, awesome lava geyser effect. Again, I chose to stick with Link.

The Sinister Side by apa649: Another awesome creepy theme. Good music too, what game is it from? Awesome color scheme for the level. That fall to the star freaked me out at the end.

Sunny Summertime Swim by Ratty524: Great looking level. Cool music too. Surfer koopas were hilarious too. What's with Kelly saying "I'm not afraid of water! Don't be racist!" ?

Fire Temple by Deckiller: The 3rd of Deckiller's temples. The black ground in the beginning looked pretty cool. I'm surprised you used the 'Chanting' version of the Fire Temple theme, considering the controversy of why it was edited out of Ocarina of Time.

Grim Grotto by DarklordKeinor: Wow! Sweet background! Cool music too. Nice looking rock blocks. Awesome level.

*Kirby makes an appearance as well. Awesome!

Cowabunga! by Kentona: Most awesome throwback level ever! This is definitely one of my most favorite levels. Hammer Bros. throwing ninja stars is awesome. Plus, any level that just gives you a Hammer Suit right off the bat gets an A+ in my book! And thank god that bomb sequence isn't timed. I played as Link who isn't exactly a fast swimmer. You even replicated the most annoying section of that level, the part that's cluttered with the shocking seaweed.

Cursed Funklen by seiromem: Dark colored boos look cool. Music is interesting. This level was frustrating as hell though.

Castle of the Dead by Isrieri: Awesome backgrounds. Cool music. Moderately difficult. Managed to beat Gohma on the 1st try this time, thanks to the leaf power-up & a lot of luck.

Gallery 6 - Romanticism:

Pipe Path by lonestarluigi: Assigning certain piranha plants to certain color pipes was a nifty idea, makes it easier to predict them & get around them. Forest music from SMRPG is always nice to listen to.

Chocolate Canyon by Davenport: Ah, Chocolate Island. Elevator rides with switches, just like good ol' times. Good level.

Spirit Temple by Deckiller: Deckiller's 4th Temple level. Spirit Temple theme is nice to listen to. Good level, but that moving wall section was a rage inducing pain in the ass! (And a pain to my eyes as well)

Koopa Rave by halibabica: PSY's Gangnam Style (or as I call it, Gundam Style), makes this an awesome level to play & one of my favorites. Wendy was a piece of cake! Just stand on the middle platform & let her jump underneath you.

Chaos Woods by Jparker1984: Not exactly a easy level that's for sure. There were still some areas in this level I never managed to get to.

Oil Oasis by pyrodoom: A throwback to Sonic 2's Oil Ocean, awesome idea. But this was rather difficult to complete.

Jail Breakers by Ratty524: I love the Dragon Quest 3 dungeon theme. Hammer Bros. throwing spears, that's pretty cool. That notice to the prison guards pretty much meant "Screw you Link!"

Bublar Temple by seiromem: A temple made by someone other than Deckiller? Interesting. "Watch out! This pit's for pros only!" You mean like Link with a Tanooki Pendant jumping on a block & then jumping again & then turning into a fairy to fly the rest of the way? That kind of pro?

Path to Darkness by DarklordKeinor: Nice water in the background. Oh God! Bloody Murder! Awesome! Sweet idea with the giant pool of blood with a red P-Switch. Couldn't use the chainsaw as Link, boo hoo!

Guernica by nin8halos: Bleach music! Awesome! This level was hard as hell! It was definitely an adrenaline rush trying to rush through this level. Nice boss fight though.

Gallery 7 - Realism: (Should be renamed Rage-ism)

Starlight City by Solitayre: Sweet background! Difficulty is a bit much. Cool music. Not a fan of auto-scrollers though.

Mysterious Flying Gentleman Lakitu by DarklordKeinor: I hate this level with a passion. Serious rage inducer here. F--K THIS LEVEL!!!

Fleetfeet Falls by Blitzen: As if the last level wasn't rage inducing enough, now I had to put up with a 2nd one? Well I've heard ahead of time that this was a pain in the ass, but it didn't help with the pain this level caused. Luckily Link's down-stab along the wooden spikes offered me a shortcut to the exit.

Castle Crushers by Kentona: Seriously?! Not 1, not 2 but 3 consecutive rage inducing levels?! Getting that P-Switch as Link was a stroke of luck.

Gusty Indeed! by Isrieri: Air Man's theme remix is awesome. Quite challenging without being rage inducing.

Chemical Romance by masterofmayhem: Star Fox music! Awesome! Nice background & theme. Something screwy with the pipe at the end of the 1st section. Couldn't go down it but pushing up makes you go upward instead (must have put the wrong entrance direction with that one). This level is a breeze if you just stick to the top area & fly across.

Guardians of the Secret by nin8halos: Strange looking level indeed. Where are the graphics from? Are they custom made? Cool Mario 2 remix music.

Glass Cannon by Ratty524: Not as rage inducing as I thought it would be. I was expecting glass platforms that shattered when hit with a bullet bill but luckily that wasn't the case. Cool idea though.

Industrial Failure by seiromem: Cool theme. Dr. Toadly was hilarious! He almost killed me by making me laugh myself to death! I can't even begin to imagine how hard that boss fight would have been if it actually took place.

Dis Respect by halibabica: Metroid themed level, sweet! Cool Boss.

Gallery 8 - Impressionism: Nice mushroom sprites, and I get to ride in a clown car? Sweet! Word of warning though! If you move yourself under a platform the wrong way you can in fact die here. When I did, I appeared in the 1st gallery.

Feel the Heat by apa649: Only one way to describe this level, Annoying as Hell! Grrrrrrrrrrrr!

Molten Magma by Davenport: Fire fire everywhere! Red rexes, red noteblocks, crazy music oh my. And let's not forget the awesome lava geysers.

Black Bando's Brigand Bastion by seiromem: Nice ghost house remix! Chain chomp vine is an awesome idea. Bandits looked pretty cool.

Shadow Temple by Deckiller: The 5th and final Temple by Deckiller. The purple boo turning black when looked at is genius. Funny how the Tanooki Suit acts as the Lens of Truth in this. Wow! You even included a ship to ride on, awesome!

Funky Frantic Fortress by Ratty524: Sweet background & cool music. Live wires were awesome! Cool tank!

Baneful Brimstone by masterofmayhem: Magma Rock theme from Golden Sun 2! Rising lava & then pipes that fire shells at you? That's just F-ing cheap!

Bullet Factory by Desmo360: Awesome remix! Cool bullet launchers. That's pretty sneaky, hiding that door to the Tanooki Suit like that.

Mario Core by halibabica: Only one word describes this level, freeeaky! Damn that boss was crazy, can't believe I beat it on the 1st try.

Final Destination by DarklordKeinor: Great level design, but scary as hell. A smash bros. arena, epic! Master Hand boss was awesome!

*Finding Link was both a pain in the ass & a waste of time! My lives were already maxed out from the 1-up factory in DarklordKeinor's Pipe Platformer level. Should've given me a Hammer/Tanooki Suit or a Blue/Black Yoshi or the Podoboo's/Lakitu's Shoe instead!

Our Gracious Host by the 5 judges:

Isrieri's Trial: Firebrand from Ghost'n'Goblins/Gargoyle's Quest was an awesome cameo appearance! Somewhat difficult.

DarklordKeinor's Trial: Soldier Koopas were awesome! Rage inducing though.

nin8halos's Trial: Not bad, but a little too easy for a trial level.

Deckiller's Trial: Shorter than expected, but not easy.

Judgement: As if dodging Eli's projectiles wasn't hard enough (Link's shield was completely useless), there's a F--KING time limit?! And he has a 2nd form? And he still attack's you a 3rd time?! Talk about cheap! I finally managed to beat him after numerous tries.

* It's completely pointless to collect the very last star just to be able to get the best power-ups; Tanooki/Hammer Suits, The Podoboo's/Lakitu's Shoe & the Blue/Black Yoshis. After you beat the game there's nothing left to do, hence there's no point to it. They should've been available after like 70 or 80 stars not 90!, when they were needed!

So anyway that's my review. Sorry for the brief comments per level but reviewing each level does take a lot of time (and typing) so most of them had a brief review, usually commenting on the things that stood out from the norm. I complemented all the great features & ideas that give the levels the added touch that made them great. Overall, this was a great game made by the RMN community as usual, I just wish I had developed my level making skills sooner so I could've contributed something, but maybe next time (Super RMN World 2 perhaps?). This is in fact my 1st time giving a review on here so if my review is lacking in anyway, feel free to give constructive criticism in the comments section. Well, thank you for those who are reading this & to the RMN community for making not just a great game but a great community based series, & I hope we will see more projects like this in the future. For those who are reading this before downloading, I highly recommend this, as well as the past RMN Bros. games. Enjoy the game & good luck!

Eh...

EEEEEEEEEEEEeeehh...

Thanks for the review, I guess. To be honest, the fact that each comment was brief was this review's DOWNFALL.

On too many occasions you stated that something was "annoying" or "rage-inducing" without actually explaining why that part of the level was rage-inducing and annoying. Take this for instance:
Mysterious Flying Gentleman Lakitu by DarklordKeinor: I hate this level with a passion. Serious rage inducer here. F--K THIS LEVEL!!!

You say it's a serious rage inducer and you state that you hate it, but you don't tell us WHAT made you mad or WHY. Because of this, how do you expect the people who use these reviews to determine whether to give the game their time to care about anything you say? No offense, but Ancient Noob pulled off this style of reviewing way better than you have. It would have been better as a series of comments.
Thanks for playing xD.
Next time, I will use the forest song from twilight princess.
In my opinion, this is probably the best game ever.

Also nice to here you employed my level. I can't believe you guessed 75% of the music selection.

Pro Tip: You might want to change the title to something a bit more witty - referring to yourself like that will make everyone think less of your review.

Glad you enjoyed the game. Did you have any favorite moments while playing?
I'm going to guess Animebryan did not enjoy the poison mushroom bubbles in Mysterious Flying Gentleman Lakitu. If it's any consolation, the first draft of the level was far worse than what was released in the final product.

Nonetheless, I'm glad top hear you enjoyed the game over all, though I do want to punch myself over the life exploit in Pipe Platformer.

Oh well. Congratulations on completing the game and thanks for the review.

I would've liked to know more of what you thought of the game overall, how you picked the review score and why, etc. From the sounds of things, you enjoyed it, so that's good to hear.

Just a few amusing things: Faron Woods used to have Twilight Princess' music throughout, but the Skyward Sword version found its way in at the last minute. The Mr. Burns and Freeze levels have their names reversed because of the power-up types Mr. L can find in them (fire in the ice level and vice versa).

I found it funny that you had trouble with the first four levels in W7, but found Gusty Indeed! enjoyable. That level gives me more trouble than any other in the game.

I couldn't give out hammer and tanooki suits at any less than full completion because otherwise there's no reward for collecting all the stars. Likewise, Link's secret would've been more valuable if you didn't exploit the life farm. Not everyone has the foresight (or patience) to sit and rack up Goombas like that, so I think the secret's fine.

Thanks for taking the time to make the review! A little more depth would've been nice, though.
PS. "the giant veggies" are called "carrots" in Super Mario World. :)

RE: Backin' Up music

Thanks for the review! These are the kind of reviews I like for collaborative games with tons of individual submissions.
Yeah, sorry for the lack of details throughout my review, I'll be sure to be more in-depth from now on. The first few levels in Gallery 7 were hard as hell. The only reason I was able to beat Fleetfeet falls was because of Link's ability to downstab across spikes which gave me a shortcut to the exit. The Gentleman Lakitu was rage inducing because of all the crap he throws at you (with deadly accuracy) along with all the poison mushroom shenanigans every where (took me like 30-40 tries to get through that level). Gusty Indeed! didn't seem that hard for me compared to the others, I guess different game-playing skills produce different results in difficulty.

I don't consider getting the suits after beating the game a reward because those suits are meant to be used. There was nothing to do after beating the game hence no real reward. If you had put in a post-game special world like in Super RMN Bros 3 then the suits would've been worth it. Besides, I got my suit fix thanks to seiromem's Mega Mole Mountain, which provides one of each & isn't too hard to escape the level unscathed.

As for why I gave the score I did, well that's pretty obvious. Although I have yet to finish the 1st 2 RMN Bros. games, I've been very impressed with how they each turned out & was never truly disappointed (even though the rage inducing levels). At least now I can learn from my mistake & remember to give more details about each level for any future reviews. I may even replay Castles - Masterpiece Set to give that game a review, as well as the other RMN Bros. games. Well thanks for reading my review anyway, I'll do better next time.

It's a thing called 'replay value'. At the end of Super Mario Bros. 3, if you continue playing after beating the game, you discover that your item slots are filled to the brim with infinite flight P-Wings. It's that sort of deal. The bonus room gives you easy access to all the galleries and bonus areas, so you can replay any part of the game with any configuration of power-ups very easily. Giving out broken items like Lakitu's Shoe any sooner simply doesn't work.

I wouldn't have asked if it was. In what ways do you think the game could've been better? Was there anything in particular that kept it from scoring higher? Not to say that 4/5 is bad. I just like to know what to look out for in the future.
Unless the end-game suits thing WAS the reason, in which case welppppp

As for broken items like the lakitu's shoe, that's understandable. I'm not much of a replayer, once I beat a game & get everything there is to get I move on either to the next SMBX game (which there's plenty of), or working on my own levels.
The Game was good overall. The only reasons I had for not giving it a perfect score were the rage inducing levels, cheapness of the Gohma boss as well as the final boss & the power-up situation. Other than that, it's all good. BTW, if there is going to be another RMN game will you continue to stick to the HUB system or would you consider using a world map again? Because I do miss being able to run around on a world map.

I can understand Gohma (whom I've since adjusted for Link), but I'm surprised the final boss gave you trouble. Link makes a joke out of the second form, and the first and third are basically just Larry Koopa.

The next game is indeed going to have a world map. I like hubs, but world map will work better for what I have in mind.

Aren’t you guys “technically” going to go down in makerscore, considering that Animebryan and my review now combine for a 9 overall instead of a 10 out 10 like before.

And this is a pretty solid review; I enjoyed reading up on all your comments about all the different levels and what you thought of each of them. Looking back on it, I actually should have commented more about the levels individually than just adding a brief summary.
Seiromem
I would have more makerscore If I did things.

Interesting review, I'm glad you liked all my levels pretty much. You should review Castle's Master-Piece set.

I do agree with Hali, you should of explained yourself when you stated certain levels to be frustrating or having frustrating parts, you should also review Castle's Master Piece set.
for an example of your vagueness:
