One day, Mario and Luigi received a letter inviting them to a hip-happening party going down in the mysterious World 9. After a long journey filled with trials and tribulations, they began to notice the imposing veneer of a towering stronghold...in World 7.

This was the legendary Fortress of Solitude. No one who has gone in has ever come out again. Will you be the first to do so?

Castles - Masterpiece Set is a compilation of castle levels in SMBX by the RMN community. It isn't so much a game as it is a gallery of levels. The focus of this event was Level Design: To make castles that are more engaging via the obstacles and layout of each level rather than through atmosphere or graphics. It's pretty tough!

~TO INSTALL~
1. If you don't have it, download SMBX (it's free!).
2. Download the gamefile and extract the .zip to the SMBX "worlds" folder.
3. Start up SMBX, click "Start Game" on the splash screen, and you're ready to go!

I don't have a SNES and I don't want to buy one! Actually, I do, but I don't want to pay lots of money...

Welp, there ARE emulators you know, probably at the least of a much lower cost.
Google it.

Emulators do not cost money.

Listen to nin8halos. He's offering good advice. SMW was the very first game I ever played. I highly recommend it to you.

Help me do a new Dr. Toadley game

I'd be happy to offer a hand. Just email me the details and I can church out a few levels for you.
Hey now, talking about emulation and linking to emulators is fine (I personally prefer SNES9x) but linking to roms isn't allowed.

I can defiantly see where you’re coming from

Why are we not allowed to link to roms?

Why are we not allowed to link to roms?

Because they're illegal.

Because they're illegal.

No they aren't! With every single thing I've done that's APPARENTLY illegal...like using keygens, downloading music, BLAH DE FUCKING BLAH! I will not accept that Roms are illegal. If so, arrest me and my father now, so help me God! Why do you think people make emulators? Emulators are useful to people who have a computer, either don't have the money or want to use their money for something else, and for those games that everyone loves. Plus people do say that as long as you have the game, roms are allowed. Well the main purpose of using roms, is if you don't have the game, doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose?
Finally, there aren't many emulators out there anyway! Most people go for those famous emulators, and a lot of them won't work as well. And since most working emulators have roms made by people as well, such as the game that at least I enjoyed, SoMario for the NES.
Seriously, getting stuff such as this, and saying it's illegal, should be the only real thing illegal anyway. And on the internet, you may be talking to someone else in the world, who knows their laws, and theirs may be different from ours. So come on, cut us some slack! If emulators are allowed to be linked to, why aren't Roms? Emulators are pretty much just as illegal anyway.
Very good point pyrodoom. I'm still a bit hesitant to go around downloading emulators though.....
Distributing roms is copyright infringement. Emulators don't infringe on copyrights. This site is hosted in a place that is affected by copyright law. Finding roms nowadays is pretty easy anyways. Posting links to roms is not allowed on this site.
Like it or not, that's the way it works. Simply put, regardless of thoughts or personal beliefs, the site can be shut down if it's found to be hosting ROMs. It's better to avoid this debacle in the long run.
Downloading music and using keygens are illegal. Also, the law doesn't give a flying fuck if you "accept" it or not. The main purpose of ROMs is not so that you can get games you don't own, it's to have a backup of the media you bought.

Fair enough, although I'm pretty sure that emulators and roms are legal if they are for outdated/archived systems and games. I'll look inot that...
As ROMs for older games were made after Mickey Mouse and Disney will push to extend the period where copyright items fall under the public domain back and back into infinity...

Plus there's the whole virtual console thing Nintendo came out with since the Wii. Even old games are still legal minefields. The old Ultra / Konami TMNT game strewn all over which lead to it costing more than other NES games on the VC and how it was eventually taken down.

Emulators are in a different legal bucket as you can't copyright the hardware like you can with creative content like games. Reverse engineering stuff that isn't protected is fine and any patents relating to code for the NES or SNES would've long expired. There's still some legal issues such as the BIOS on newer emulators that is required but not included with the emulator itself. I'm not entirely sure what is up with that, I'm just some Internet dude armchair lawyering shit that takes years to learn and is in general a total clusterfuck.
The BIOS is protected by copyright. The hardware really isn't, as it's available in practically any CD/DVD/BR (depending on the system) drive you want to look at - it's the settings and programming in the BIOS that actually tell the machine how to interpret what it's reading, and that's essentially software.

ROMs are still illegal - they're just dumps of the actual software, no different than a pirated copy of a PC game, which is really just a dump of what's on the disc. It doesn't matter how old the original game is, if the company hasn't legally given up their claim to the software, it's still copyrighted and protected under law, and thus illegal to copy - even games belonging to companies that went out of business are still protected, as someone, somewhere, owns the copyright to the game unless they've been legally given up.

The emulators aren't though - they aren't the original systems, or the original software, they're someone else writing software that emulates being the system (hence the name) to access the dumped information. A very similar situation to WinE - it emulates Windows, but it isn't actually Windows, so it's legal. Since the person who wrote the program has chosen to give it away, sharing it isn't illegal.

SMBX isn't illegal, because it didn't cost money to get it. So, Nintendo had no reason to get redigit to stop continuation of the project. It also means that this Castles - Masterpiece Set AND Super RMN Brothers is illegal, just because we used this program. Therefore, let's stop talking about illegal shit and Roms and just continue with our lives.
