Story?
Who needs story?! You are a dashing young stud looking for adventure in the big wide world and realise that the best way to do it is by just running headlong into it and see what happens!

Features?
  • Explore: Materials, monsters and goodies are all over the world just waiting to be found. Go in any direction you want, dodge or fight the baddies, collect what you can and fight a number of bosses who wander around.

  • Fog of War: A fog of war effect wraps the dungeons up in a darkness you must clear, and enhances the exploration experience; that, and gives monsters somewhere to ambush you from!

  • Enemies Level with You: Enemies grow based on your own growth, so there's never a "wrong" path to take with baddies ten levels too high. Your crafted equipment is what sets you apart from them!

  • Craft: All those materials you collect get put to use by crafting them into a variety of weapons, armour and medicines to aid your journey.

  • Karma: You can do good and bad in your travels, and it's up to you which. But just remember that every bad thing you do will eventually build up and before you know it, will kick your ass in a way you never saw coming. Life is much easier for those who do good in their travels.

  • Boss with the Flow: Bosses getting you worried? If they beat you, you just get sent back to before their event with a full heal to boost; no reloading saves and trekking up the full dungeon collecting again, just give the boss another try (or leave, if you don't think you can). But don't take it too lightly; bosses also exact a permanent stat reduction on you for losing to them!!

  • Random Discoveries: Random events and maps litter the world for you to bump into, offering a variety of events and people to find that could be perfectly useful or perfectly useless.

  • Day & Night: The hours of the day change what there is to do from villagers going to sleep come night time, to the fiercest of bosses coming out on the midnight hours.

So...so what?
To be honest, this is a bunch of experimental stuff I've been thinking and just throwing it together in the most open-world fashion I could think of.
Y'know how the best bit of Skyrim is how easily distracted you get with all those sidequests, and completely forget about the main story while cleaning up some cave fifty miles away?
Well I've made an effort to basically ditch the main story altogether in favour of just an extensive collection of side-quests. No running from town to town collecting them from people; just a world where lots of things are happening and you can choose to get involved or not.

These could vary from running across people under attack (and choosing whether to leave, help them out or even steal their stuff and run) to hunting down the field bosses that potter around the world looking scary.
With the fog of war effect, each map feels bigger and more worrying as you hunt for materials without being ambushed by the monsters.

I'm just going for that aimless wandering experience where you're constantly running around doing things, but have no idea where exactly you're going. With any luck, that's exactly the experience it'll give.

Updated: Demo v1.2

EDIT:
Updated to v1.2 as of 17/02/13.

Demo's out now! Everything's a lot more polished up than in the Alpha Test and the final dungeon of the island has been finished, and a Boss Rush mode added at the end of the demo.

I'll just link to my other blog for details since I don't wanna have to type everything up twice:

This looks promising so I'll subscribe.
Wow... I am cautioned not to d/l this because it is said to be unsafe.

In retrospect I should have said it might be my antivirus or something...I do apologise for just tossing that out without a caveat.

Amn't sure what that is, tbh. Is just a regular blue-square compressed gamedisk file that I've uploaded both to here and mediafire a dozen times before, so didn't even think about any problems with that.

If anyone does have any problems of that nature, let me know ASAP and I'll compress a new file straight away.
I have that warning pop up on my computer for many games here. I have been playing and it seems fine.
Also I got the boat. That battle was fun, but Im still unable to beat that thief guy. Ill go looking for more bosses with the boat. :)
I've just played it a bit, and around level 9 and having explored most of the forest (plus having forged a Vale Sword), I suddenly can't move upward and am forced downwards. In fact, I can't even go down in the menu options, have to scroll up. I'm using Windows XP.

Sounds like an unusual bug. If you can give me some more specifics I can try to look for it and find out what's happening, but this isn't something I've seen or heard before now so I've not got much to go on.

It's a bit fuzzy, and on an old computer that's currently shut off. It was on the second day around Noon-ish and I was trying to get outside the forest at the Northern edge. That's all I've got at the moment.

I can't seem to find this at all.
Not to sound condescending, but are you sure it's not a problem on your end? I would suggest a physical keyboard problem, but I presume you'd notice that outside the game as well.
I'll still look into it for you, but I will need more information if I hope to find this anywhere.

On the bright side; if it is a bug in the game, it seems like it's obscure enough that it won't affect everyone D:...?
Never ran into this bug. Must be on his end.

Looks like fun, I'll give it a go. I like the idea of running headlong into things to see what happens, makes for a fun change of pace.

EDIT: OK so I've been playing for about an hour or so and I'm running across some weird bugs. Every so often on the world map I get into a battle and suddenly I'm some inflated level, once I went from level 7 to level 105 and then next time from level 14 to level 210 (which I didn't even think was possible, given the 99 level limit, I'm assuming you're using a limit break script). However the oddest thing about it is when I went back to a previous save because it's ridiculous being that high, I'd lost a couple of skills. Tackle & Tiger stance. I have no way to get them back, since I'm pretty sure they came in around 6 or 7 and I'm past that now.

The only thing the battles had in common is that they were right after I visited the little farm, not sure if there is something there, some massive boost that I somehow triggered?

Anyway, irrespective of that, one thing I did want to say was you really need to add descriptions to the item. I'm fine with the sword mark II stuff that pretty easy to decipher. But the elixirs? Do they grant a permanent stat increase? A temporary one? I'm not using them just in case they are temporary and I need them just before I go up against a boss.

Just so you don't think I'm just complaining I do like the game, it's interesting playing as a single character, you have to be much more strategic, not just button mash (which is why the loss of those skills is so devastating) and the music is great, well suited to the atmosphere.

Anyway I'm going to wait until an updated version comes out before I try this one again. Hopefully that will be soon, I'd like to see where it goes.

Glad for the feedback, nhubi.

I've just updated the version to 1.2 now, which should clear up both of those problems.

The levels came from an event in the Farm that I was using to test one of the secrets at various different levels and gear setups and obviously forgot to take it out, like the Blowfish skills in v1.1; can be a pain trying to double-check everything yourself. If you don't see it the first time, you're not likely to see it on the double-check either :(

And item descriptions. I actually didn't even notice they didn't have them. I put them all in before the database makeover and apparently just skimmed right by it with the new ones. You can see why I need a project to keep my brain working ;)
Anyhoo; all usables items (not just elixers) have been given descriptions, including food that previously had no indications as to what they did.

Gear will probably get changed from "sword I", "sword II" eventually, but I've hit a creative mental wall for that and don't want to force out some shit-sounding names and cause confusion or interest loss based on a daft name. The mechanical titles should help people get the jist easier while getting across the point that the game is still a work in progress and being updated frequently.

Hopefully you can play it again now and enjoy it properly. If you come across anything else, just let me know :)

Brady,

thanks for the update and the changes. That's fast work and very much appreciated. I'm at work at the moment (and technically shouldn't be visiting RMN), so I'll have to let you know how I go later after I get home.

One thing though, are the skills based on the weapon? I did actually go back a play a little more and I noticed when I swapped my sword for an axe that I got tackle as a skill. Is it that I haven't lost the skills but that they are weapon-related? If so, that also probably needs to be explained (or if it was I missed it).

Yeah. After a reboot, it played as normal.

@Jakar:
Good to hear. Let me know if it pops up again, or if you find anything else.

@nhubi:
bigtime mentioned that a while back in development as well.
Technique and Steal are skills common to your character, while the Brute/Blade/Ninja Techs are specific to your weapon choice.

During Cyans introductory sequence I did mention that weapons have their own skill trees but it's obviously not clear enough.

Truthfully, I've no idea how to word it better so that it's more clearly explained D:...

Brady don't worry about it, like I said I missed it. More than likely it was as clear as a bell but I think I was wrapping my head around 'right I can do some stuff in the field, but I can't work on weapons and armour. OK that makes sense, anvil's aren't really portable' and may have missed the 'BTW weapons have different skills, go play and find out which do what.'

Gave it a bit of a longer run through last night but I think I'm going to leave it be for now. I know I like it and will d/l once it's done and I've subbed so I'll know when, but there are a few more demo's out there I want to have a look at to see if they are also going in the right (for me) direction.

Good Luck, I'll be back after the next update ;)
When I hit level 32 I acquired three new skills. Checking my menu there arent any new skills listed. Will they not become available until I have better skills?

They'll be the weapon specific skills; each type of weapon has its own skill subset with different skills~
One thing I keep finding is that the game slows to a halt after a while. Going from the hero's house to across the bridge, things get progressively slower at each new screen. Not sure if it's just all the events, music, monsters, but something is slowing it down.

If I save, exit and restart from a position, the slowness "cache" gets wiped out.

I've no idea what that is at all; I've not experienced it at all. I presume your machine runs fine and that this doesn't happen with other RPGM games?
I don't have any other VX Ace games, so I can't compare there. I use Windows XP and I haven't had problems with older versions of RPG Maker.
