Spirit Recollection is a forever-free game I've been making as a hobby for the past three months or so. The project started in probably December 2012 or so, and is a sort of evolution of an RPG I tried to make in RPG Maker XP as a teenager. Looking back, I wasn't proud of what I made in the least, never tested it, and didn't worry about character growth or anything, just kept throwing stupid 2-3 screen dungeons in, as well as midis from other RPGs. This time, hardly anything, save the name 'Yinua', is the same, I want to tell a story this time, and I'm hoping that it will be enjoyable to follow along, at least. And this time, I'm building on RPG Maker VX Ace, which is pretty neat, from what I've played around with.

As you may of noticed, I'm no artist. Or musician. So, I'm using the built-in VX Ace RTP. Maybe one day I could find somebody for some graphics I have planned for late in the story, or some music, but for now, I'm going to focus on simply telling a story with limited resources. Hopefully my writing and dialog can carry itself.

The story follows a girl named Ceal, who was born without magic. In this world, everybody who is born shows signs of control over a magical element, fire, lightning, earth, or water, and for poor Ceal, she doesn't seem to have any. Having just turned 20 years old, she's viewed as somebody with 'special' needs, due to the fact that she can't do what everybody else in the world can do. The story will follow her and Yinua, her closest friend, as they travel around, trying to find evidence of some form of magic for Ceal, or perhaps something more.

I'm trying to avoid traditional JRPG clichés here and there, but rereading that summary I just typed, it feels pretty cliché'd. But I have plans for this story, which will be split into two distinct parts. I'd like to try to have 8 or so hours of gameplay by the time the game is finished, and leading into the second part, and ideally, I'd like to be finished with part one by some day. But no promises here, though I do plan on finishing this eventually. Unlike the number of RPG Maker projects I started in my youth, I actually plan on finishing this.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy the game!

It's dead, Jim, and other such cliche lines

Yeah, I think I'm done here. Despite the fact that I keep getting rather inspired on how to continue, I'm just simply don't have the time to keep going on a project that I'm sure will get overlooked by a lot of people. I don't think there's much of an audience for an RPG Maker project that doesn't have a dedicated artist and musician.. and I am neither.

If you ARE an artist or musician, and want to help out, lemmie know. Maybe I'll pick this up. But as it stands, between lack of time, lack of 'pop out' visuals, and just the fact that I really don't like designing dungeons (is it obvious from the Mansion?), I likely won't pick this back up.

I considered writing it as an ebook and putting it somewhere for a couple bucks or something, but I've come to the realization that I imagined these standout scenes WITH music, and they feel like they lack the 'punch' without it.

But, anyways, if you were looking forward to this, I'm very sorry. Maybe one day... but no promises.

I don't plan on giving up, and I hope it is as interesting as you seem to think. That's what I'm planning on.
So! I played a little bit of the game (around 20 minutes or so). It's not a bad game... but it could use little work in certain areas.

Pros/Cons:
+ Nice mapping. It's only overly crowded or too open. Maybe a few of the interiors could be reduced in size.
+ The plot is interesting. It's a little cliche... but it's overall fun. I was interested in seeing what came next.
- The music was iffy. It's RTP, which I'm not sure why. I mean, RMN now has its own music pack. You just have to download it and pick the ones you think fit the scene the best.
- The writing could use a little work. Actually, a lot of work. This is probably the game's biggest problem right now. Some dialogue even appears and disappears instantly, making it impossible to read. It seems like the dialogue would fit more of a modern-day setting, instead of a medieval-fantasy one.

Edit: Also, I've subscribed. :)

The music is mostly RTP because I hadn't downloaded the RMN pack, and honestly, I'm quite fond of a lot of the RTP music. I'll start using the RMN pack, most likely, later.

And about the writing, I'm doing the instant-wipe stuff sometimes to signify that the speaker is being cut off. It's never anything 'really' important. And about everyone sounding rather modern, that's on purpose. I've never liked the overly formal 'medieval' talk, so I'm making the dialog sound rather modern on purpose, and partially to make the the game stand out, a bit. I feel that I make the dialog sound 'natural', at least in a modern sense.

Thanks for the kind words though. Nice mapping, though? I've felt that mapping is my worst area >< But thanks for the plot talk. The plot and characterizations of Ceal and Yinua are my highlights.
Just played through the part that's up now, and I've got to say, I'm looking forward to playing the rest! I like the premise and the characters; the banter is realistic without getting boring. I can't wait to know what happens to Ceal...

Hehe, thank you! I dunno exactly when I'll post a new update, but it shouldn't be too super long!
I downloaded this a night ago, and i'm having a problem entering the forest, I keep getting "Unable to find file: Graphics/Characters/Animal"

Just wondering how I could fix it since i'm enjoying the game.

Gonna re-install rpg maker vx ace RTP. nemesis25 suggested that since i got the same error with his game. So if it works nevermind ^^

I guess I finished the demo o.o When it said to go west.. I did xD an there was nothing there.. If it is the end of the demo, i'm sad v.v I was enjoying it a lot. <3 Ceal being my favorite. So.. Hurry and add more >w< I cant wait for the update.

Yeah, I don't know anyone with that error, probably your RTP. And, when you go west, you should show up at a beach area... hm. Take a screenshot of said 'west'? Maybe you're at a different location, I thought I put a Game Over at the end..

Are you still developing this game?

I don't think so. Gotten two jobs, working rather often, and, as much as I really want to tell the story I've penned up, I don't think I'll ever get inspired enough to do the busywork to make it, like the mapping. Ideally, I would resume it if I could find someone to write music, and draw graphics, for it. That'd be awesome, and make this stand out from the crowd. But, unfortunately, I haven't got anyone. So, even if I did finish this, I don't think anyone would really give any attention to it, due to RTP (or a free pack) of graphics.

So yeah, maybe I'll return to this one day, but likely, it's done. I'm sorry.
Short demo. Pretty interesting themes. Writing is better than your typical RTP rpgmaker game. Battles are pretty easy. However I am currently stuck, I just cleared the mansion and rested up, but now I dont know where to go next. I tried going west out of town but there was a impassible bridge and there doesnt seem to be anywhere else to go on the world map.
