The Real Deal

Looking at the download count for this game makes me lose hope in humanity.
Gaidon Saga was the second game I made with RPG Maker. Was it an improvement over the first one? Well... It depends on how you look at it. It uses a lot more resources that the first one. It also has a lot of annoying switches, like I really over did it with that mechanic. Only a sadistic human would download this game. A person who hates themselves sooooo deeply that they need to feel the pain of despair. You have been warned.

Background

Giadon is divided into the five elemental kingdoms: Earth, Fire, Air, Water, and Aether. In ancient times there was a war between the kingdoms that almost ripped the very fabric of existence apart. In order to prevent the destruction of all existence the five nations signed a peace contract that has lasted thousands of years.

Main Character and Main Story

Da-Zar is the second son to the King of the Fire people. Da-Zar specializes in Fire Magic and Katana weapon skills. The story of Da-Zar starts out as he tries to protect his home from the ever growing threat of monsters. But as the story progresses he learns of a looming war between the Air and the Water people. Da-Zar must unravel the mystery of who is behind the chaos in order to restore balance to the world.

The story mainly takes place in Firago, the capital of the Fire people. At the beginning of the story there doesn't seem like there is much to do in Firago. As the story progresses more conversations, items, and quests will become available.

Other Characters

Besides Da-Zar, there are up to Eight other playable characters that will join and leave the party through the course of the story. Here is a list of characters early in the game:

  • Lei-Won: Da-Zar’s older brother and next in line to become King of Firago. While also specializing in Fire Magic, Lei-Won’s Katana skills differ greatly from Da-Zar’s.

  • Hone: A monk with a very humble demeanour. He specializes in hand to hand combat and some restorative magic.

  • Sini: As Hone’s wife she is more cheerful and upbeat. Sini doesn’t focus much on attack skills, instead has a wider variety of healing magic.

Features

  • Yanfly Battle Engine and Celianna Tilesets.

  • Each enemy has its own strengths and weaknesses based on its elemental affinity.

  • Optional quests, optional dungeons, optional final boss, and an optional playable character.

  • NewGame+, which allows you to replay the game with your stats and equipment.

  • Approximately 10 hours of gameplay possible.

Giadon Saga - Version 2.0

Because Ketona personally asked me to do it...*
Giadon Saga Version 2.0 is out.

Changes Include:

Enemy stats have been lowered.
Status effects are no longer 100%.
Status effects removed after battle.
You can choose a difficulty level.
Can sell stuff at shops.
Enemies drop items.
New bonus area available after beating game.
Skills and items listed one by one.
Some transfer events fixed.
Some other interesting problems I didn't notice before.

Note: Warrior's Guild quests and bonus dungeons such as Bad Ass Dungeon, Maze of Shadows, and the Final Crypt have not been updated since they are optional.

*Ketona came to me in a dream and requested this**

**What dream Ketona actually said may or may not actually reflect anything to do with this game.

WOOOO! Someone still played this game. Mind completely blown.

Well... It's been a while... There is one quest where you need to step
on an invisible tile and it will give you an accessory that removes random encounters if equipped. I believe you need to walk around the map just north of the water town.
I'm not sure which Madam Vi's quest your doing, but I remember there is a guy you might need to fight inside the tent / war area in one of her quests and that is in the swamp area.
haha, yes, i am.
the tile is.. invisible? i guess i'll just skip it then. i already tried researching around the forest area and still not find it. i ended up getting the special item for the madam vi quest in there, although i'm not sure know why (it's the third madam vi quest btw). thanks a lot for the info!

i have some questions with the side quests:
- got any clue about the special tile? i have been searching on the forest, dungeon, highlands, and swamp but i still don't find it. i even don't know how the tile look like.
- regarding the madam vi quests (on the firago pub). where does the special item located? iirc, i read it in the swamp, but i can't seem to find anything important there. no one is giving me a reminder for the clue.

thanks :)

It's unlikely that Dragon Lancer and Giadon Saga will see further updates.
You could send me your save file and I might be able to change the difficulty for you and send the save file back to you. (PM me and put the save file in your locker if you wish me to do this.) Otherwise you need to beat the game and activate new game plus to be able to choose a new difficulty. I would suggest Legendary difficulty on a second play through on New Game+.

In Soma - Talk to the guy on the first fl of the inn, then go to the first house (I think) and talk to that guy, then go to a gravestone and read it, then go to the inn second fl and talk to another guy, then go back outside.
I like the idea of difficulty options....but....I played moron just to see how easy it was for about an hour. I really would like to change it to a normal option, but it doesnt provide this. Is it possible to patch or in the next demo give a one-time chance to change the difficulty level? Thanks.

Also I am stuck in SOMO and not sure what to do next. I thought i was supposed to go back to the general but he doesnt say anything. I cant find the queen who is reputed to maybe be in the town somewhere....I think.

those features...subbed
the problem is your enemies have attac states set to 100% the death spell works 100% of the time if a character dies they are dead cant rez them because they will die before they get an action because most enemies get 2-6 actions a turn and the enemies do a fuckton of damage i finally hacked in an item that makes me half immune to statuses and doubles mhp

That is an optional quest. After talking to Fluffy he asks you
to do something in cat language, you need to figure out what he wants.
I would start by talking to some other cats because "cats are people
too."
I've finished Chapter 4.
Anybody know how many times you have to talk to the old man's cat before he says something other than meowwwwww????

You completed all 30 missions!!! Wow, that is impressive.
Some of the bonus dungeons were intentionally made difficult.
To be honest when I played through the game I thought it was
easy (maybe I played too much Final Fantasy or Zelda - old school ones.)

With Odin it really depended on what skills he was using.
The exile skill can sometimes be really cheap, but at level
68 it might have been a cake walk. You can repeat this battle
as many times as you want. If he manages to exile all three
party members and kill Da-Zar it can be game over very quickly.

Thank you for enjoying the game. Progress on my next
game is going well, with about 30 minutes of gameplay
so far.
Ok.
Game completed, 30 missions cleared, everything in my way killed.

I already said what I think about the overall difficulty setting and you are aware about it too, so it's useless repeating myself.

2 things, one public and one hidden:
PUBLIC: I see in you a good potential, It's pretty amazing the progress you made in such a short time between your games and personally I can't wait to see your next game. Despite your reactions you proved yourself open to suggestions. Keep going!

Hidden
Well.. Odin... After the final crypt I had a level 68 party and had my bad time against Zeus, but Odin was a cakewalk. I expected an impossible and rewarding fight, but it wasn't! Suggestion: if you press players to the limit and then you create a super final boss for those who had the patience to get there, make it the worst nightmare of their lives!!!!!!! ;)

Thanks a lot for this game!!! ;)

My next game aims to be bigger and better than the last.
Based on current production I'm expecting a release
sometime between November 2013 - January 2014.
But I don't want to rush it. My goal is to
one day get one of my games featured on RMN.
Hopefully my next game is good enough. Here's a screen
shot of an area I'm working on. Any thoughts?

Edit: For those who find Giadon Saga too difficult I have
created a special save file (available in my locker.)
Only use this if you have become completely overwhelmed
with the game's difficulty.

If I knew how to make a game, Id fight for it like it was my own child. Id want everyone to love my game even if they didnt and for sure, not everyone will. I wouldnt be so complacent in my responses to people. I really liked your game BUT it WAS overly biased against the player. Thats not really even a major problem because a challenge makes you say, "Hey I can go back and try this bitch again."
But whenever someone tries to draw you out and hope you show some major love for your creation, you always seem to be,"Well whatever happens, happens...if you dont like it, tough titty."
If you made it just for yourself to enjoy you shouldnt have put it out. But you did. And we played it. We had concerns and ideas and suggestions. As it went along there started to be slight warnings about the difficulty and none stated in meanness but in hopes you might fix it or have an attitude of,"Thanks for the great ideas and I WILL make a better game next time."
But you are so laid back.
I really am curious to see your next game because this had some serious good things with it. But little brother, you need to be more humble in your reactions to those who played your game. That was some bad advice you gave there to Horror even though the review was a little forceful, at least it was accurate.
Right click, delete, empty recycle bin...
This was your child and you kicked it to the curb.

Not everygame can be everything to everyone.
I'm not here to make everyone happy.
If just one person likes this game then I
have achieved my goal.
If just one person hates this game then I
have achieved my goal.
And as long as no one is indifferent about the game,
it will be at least be remembered for something.

Some people will like this game, a lot of people
will hate this game, and some people will come here
to post about how much this game sucks.

My advice:
Right click, delete, empty recycle bin....

Going to stop playing this one. First - monsters are wayyy too overbalanced - I have to keep going back to the castle to hit the heal crystal in Da-Zar's room every two or three battles so I don't burn through potions. Second - potions are too expensive in comparison to the amount of gold dropped. I understand mana potions being more expensive, but healing potions should be at least half the cost of mana potions, and potions that remove bad statuses (poison, etc.) should be cheaper than healing potions. Third - no place to sell old equipment. Fourth - random encounter rate is too high considering the overbalancing of the monsters. Fifth - not enough chests in which to find either potions, weapons, armor or accessories. Sixth - weapons, armors and accessories in towns are way too expensive in comparison to the gold dropped. This game needs a complete overhaul.

I fixed your problem and e-mailed you back.
Hope it works.

Remember for a scetion like this in a game like
this to have more than one save file. I think
Jason even alludes to the fact that you can't
come back.
Done... hope you can warp me out! I want to know Madame Vi... better :D

If you can keep her alive the ice arrow is pretty useful,
if you have any technique potions left. Da-Zar's Assault attack
is also hardcore against any enemy. Try to save the Holy attack
for the second final boss, obviously. I think somehwere in the
dungeon there may be a Miracle Potion, which brings back all
KO allies to full HP.

If your going to do the extra optional dungeon after you
beat the game (The one with Jason)
you might want to visit the accessory store
and purchase a set of 3 accessories that raise your
max HP and MP. The last bonus dungeon makes everything
else in the game look like a cakewalk, and this is
coming from the person who likes hard games....
This is also where I have the special looking
battlers, which look pretty cool.

Or there's New Game+, the second playthrough should
be a breeze at level 30+.

Edit: If you overwrote that stay close to the crystals.
Jason's equip doubles gold. You can purchase the new
exclusive potions from the blue crystal and the speacial
potions from the red crystal. (There is no way back from
this dungeon, which is similar to the crypt dungeons
in Dragon Lancer.)

Is it possible for you to send me the save file and for
me to warp you out and send you back the new save file?
You can e-mail me at ktoombs@yahoo.ca with the subject
tag Giadon Saga. I will see what I can do.
I'm pretty sure anyone could be happy of "weakness spot defense".
In your next game keep that strategy need focused but give players some item to defend from status changes or from elemental weaknesses (even a bit).
I'm in the last dungeon (cleared the "optional" one), against the last boss and my way here has been a nightmare! The 3 elemental masters random encounter kills all my 34 level party before I even click most of the times.
You could also put a megaelixir or something like that between a final boss and a final final boss, because you make game TOO hard to beat this way, Lei kills Kalo every round he spams flame II no matte what and... guy, can a single hit do 6000 damage to Sontu? It's a little bit unfair, there's no chance to keep him alive.

Another hint: for the last last secret post game dungeon. Please, make a way back LoL. I've overwrote the save and now I can't complete the last guild mission :( :( :(

My next game will definitely have a difficulty selection.
I'm not too sure about Giadon Saga, since its easier to
implement a large script like this into something new,
rather than something with a lot of stuff that may or
may not work with the script.

Here's a picture of the difficulty selection screen
in the new game I'm making, just to prove that I
have learned something from this.

Also if anyone can think of anything else they would like
to see in my next game, let me know. I will try my best to
find a script that can handle that.

Other new features in my new game will include:
Having 5 members in the batlle party
and being able to change members in battle
with reserve party members (That means you will
have a much larger party in this game than my previous
games.)
