Recruitment Guide

There are no permanently missable characters in this game (other than technically Derek, I suppose, but he's somewhat of a special case - harder to miss than he is to recruit)). As such, though, it is highly recommended that you do not use this guide on your first playthrough, at least not until you’re at endgame! There are, obviously, spoilers inside.

(Please note that, in terms of towns, you only have access to Bredfort, Rao and Highway Village from the start of the game; Eindall, Anlin, Alfalfan and Burr are all accessible once the bridges are fixed at the end of 'the first chapter'.)

Recruitment Guide:

Orson E. Rockefeller – Central protagonist. Joins automatically at start.

Piet Mk. II – Mandatory. Speak to him in the Inventor's House in Rao, and help him out.

Marc van Doorn – Mandatory. After getting your new house and conversing with Jimothy in Rao, speak to him in his house in Highway Village.

Valentijn Ingraam II – Mandatory. Joins after speaking with Lord Ingraam in Eindall.

Gerrit Geeben – Speak to him in the pub in Rao, with Marc in the party.

Joost Bojinck – Speak to him in the Highway Village inn after getting your new house, and complete his short one-battle sidequest. Then, go and speak to him in Bredfort and let him join.

Shikata Kaede – Speak to the recruiter at the desk in Anlin, and answer “Nope.”, “I’m not from here.” and “Metaphors are hard, aren’t they?”. Afterwards, speak to Kaede in the pub and pay half your total francs to hire her.

Eilert Lyon – After entering Eindall for first time, speak to him in Burr and complete his sidequest. This involves speaking to him, in order, in the Eindall bookshop, the black market house to the south of Bredfort, Highway Village and the back room of the Highwaymen’s Hideout (fighting one very easy battle at each of the last two locations).

Jerome Strathclyde – Joins with Eilert (see above).

Derek Hodgson – Speak to the black-clothed man at Finn’s House (southeast of Burr) with Jerome on the party, accept his challenge, and lose. You will, however, lose Jerome if you do this. If you win, Derek cannot be recruited.

Olivier Wees – Speak to him in Alfalfan once Valentijn tells you to visit the Centre, and after completing Bojinck's sidequest (though Bojinck does not have to be recruited). Then, complete his very short sidequest.

Ted Grijsen – Speak to him outside the Centre anytime after Valentijn tells you to return to Eindall.

Shikata Yuji – After Valentijn has been crowned, speak to Yuji (outside the bunker in Eindall) with Kaede on the party.

Ultimate Weapon Guide

As Wilhelm Visser hints if you visit him in Centre Axes, there is one 'ultimate' weapon for each class. There's usually a discussion, too, so chase these up if you want to see characters that don’t normally interact… interacting. Like the recruitment guide, there's obviously spoilers inside, so this is best visited at endgame!

Ultimate Weapon Guide:

Not-Bad Sword - Take all sword users (Orson, Valentijn, Kaede, Yuji) to see Finn in his house on the east coast.

Venin Lance – Take both lance users (Piet Mk. II, Ted) to the Centre reception to meet Winifred, and then speak to Winifred at her house (between Eindall and the Centre).

Gobsmack Axe - Take all axe users (Geeben, Bojinck, Jerome) to speak to Visser in Centre Axes, near Alfalfan. (Obviously, you can not get the Gobsmack Axe once you have recruited Derek - so make sure you do so first if you want both the axe and Derek.)

Blinding Bow - Take both bow users (Eilert, Olivier) to speak to Mrs. Mirgarden in her house near Burr.

Piercing Bullets – After entering the Mayor's Mansion for the first time, take both gun users (Marc, Derek) to see Mayersson in the Mayor's House in Bredfort.

Hidden Backstories

There are a couple of characters whose pasts are shrouded in mystery - but there are ways to reveal them. Again, probably best to read at endgame.

Hidden Backstories:

Piet Mk. II's Backstory
Complete the requirements to receive the Venin Lance - take Piet Mk. II and Ted to the Centre reception to meet Winifred, and then speak to Winifred at her house (between Eindall and the Centre) - and Piet Mk. II's past will become clear.

Jerome's Backstory
As outlined in the recruitment guide, Jerome can fight Thelonious van der Nightmare, the black-clothed man at Finn’s House (southeast of Burr), at any time, simply by speaking to him with Jerome on the party. The outcome of the fight radically alters the scene that follows, and if Jerome wins, then his background is finally expounded upon. It’s quite a difficult fight, and even more so if Jerome is not at level 10 with the strongest armour. Having the Gobsmack Axe obviously helps, but isn’t a necessity. You’ll need a good few healing items, and I thoroughly recommend the Black Ops handbook and Jerome's axe-based lethargy-inflicting techniques. Good luck!
