It is a dark time for Tiriya. The DeLancy family, the once prosperous rulers of the land, have fallen to the forces of Valburn, the powerful neighbouring kingdom to the north. Their Lawkeepers run amok, culling the strong allies of the DeLancy's, and establishing complete control over their lands. Religious zealots, sworn to the Vrahl, condemn non-believers and sinners to death. Valburn's word is law. Vrahl doppelgangers, powerful Gods masquerading as monsters, roam the wilderness. In return for the faith of the populous, they provide their mystical powers and knowledge to further advance an industrial revolution across Tiriya. Times are changing. Valburn have control.

A small resistance group led by the believed-dead prince of Rosedell, Drake DeLancy, begin preparations for a coup d'etat. Their aim is to hijack the flagship of Valburn - the Dreadnought, where the High Courts and their King reside, and place Lawrence DeLancy back upon the throne. Yet, as their plans come to a beginning, whispers of an ancient magical force - the Blood Shard - come into play. What follows are countless betrayals, faces from the past, and a dark, shadowy figure who appears to have knowledge of everything that has occurred, from the war to the upcoming coup d'etat. Is he working with Valburn? Is he working with the Vrahl? And more importantly, what does he want with the Blood Shard?

Blood Shard has gone under monumental change since its initial demo release, with the story and gameplay almost completely changed. The aim is to provide a character-driven plot filled to the brim with political and personal intrigue, whilst forwarding the gameplay with tough encounters and puzzling dungeons. It's been shortened considerably since its first write-up, and I intend to release it in three parts. The first chapter, 'The Resistance', will be finished in the coming months, when university work is finished and I am a free man. The rest, eh, well be done when it's done.

Thanks for showing interest!

Armour Upgrading Options

For those of you who have played the demo and now have a little better insight into the game and how it works, I pose to you all a question - how many options should I have when it comes to upgrading armour?

If you didn't know, I'm implementing a system whereby the character's only have one weapon and armour each throughout the game, yet are able to upgrade those things with items at any given time (provided they have the correct materials).

Now, I already have some basic ideas - obviously upgrading armour will help with HP, Defence, MDef, AGI - but should I leave it there? I might touch on some other parameters, like Counter Evasion, Magical Reflection - stuff like that.

The reason I ask is because I already have a full list of elemental and state resisting accessories - so with that in mind, would it be a little pointless to add options to increase ele/state resistances too? It feels like it.

Excellent mapping. Some of the best on the site. I take it you used Celianna's parallax tiles?
Thanks very much. I did indeed yeah. It's mostly a mix of hers and Luna's to be honest.
Ah, I remember this! Cool that you brought it over here~ :D Btw, this is b.e.a.u.t.i.f.u.l. ;3 (First subscriber, woo~ xD)
Cool! Thanks for the subscription. Demo should be on its way after the 11th, when all my uni work is done :)
I still have the RPG Maker VX demo. :P

Oh dear xD it's pretty outdated now. Felix isn't even a character anymore!
You mean that White Mage Felix is not playable anymore? ;_;

Unfortunately so! The original cast was at something ridiculous like, 13 or something. I had to cull a lot of them to reach 7. Felix just didn't fit in to the grand scheme of things much at all (in the old version and the updated one) so unfortunately he had to go. There were a few other characters that hit the bin as well, but luckily in the old demo you didn't meet any of them. Tsalnar's still there, though, don't worry!

Other changes to the story is the fact that Drake IS the dead prince he mentions in the old demo - this has always been the case, but the story behind it was a little sketchy at the time, and I didn't want to rely on a big 'ERMERGERDZ' moment later on to carry the plot forward. Of course, Edward doesn't know his brother is alive still, which'll make for some rather interesting character development between the two.

Any other changes...errr, aside from the main story & setting, all I can really think is that The Four (if you recall the lengthy opening cutscene with all those hooded guys) have been culled too.

But don't be afraid! It was tough call, but I believe it's made the story and game in general a lot more solid.

(oh and hey if anyone fancies helping me sort out the CSS on this page then that'd be lovely!)
Subbed ^.^

The story is really intriguing and your mapping is very nice :)

Are you going to maybe put up a character page?

Thank you!

And yes, that is on the agenda for tonight. Along with a blog post containing the various mechanics and what have you of the game itself.
There is now a characters page, detailing each of the party members :)
Added a rather large page on the battle mechanics!
You have some absolutely fantastic looking maps. I'll definitely try this when it's available
Looks great, looking forward to this.
Finally, a game that shows all that is wrong with religion. Unless that isn't the aim. Well, plot I mean.

Well it's certainly the main drive of the plot, but I don't want to come across as militant. But yes, there's an awful lot of anti-religious subtext, and some scenes with the opposite. I'm an atheist myself and it comes through, but I do believe everyone is entitled to their own beliefs. Which is what this plot with really emphasise, as well as the more sinister side of either group.

BUT THAT IS A CHAT FOR ANOTHER TIME. Please, if any religious people are offended by this, that was not my intent. I'd ask you to keep an open mind to the plot when the first part's out.

Speaking of, my dissertation will be completely done by Thursday, meaning updates will be a mighty more regular. I'm aiming to have the first chapter done in the next month or two, if I'm lucky.
I never got to play the original, but this looks impressive. It's very clear you've put alot of time and thought into the story and maps. I'm going to subscribe.

Thanks! I'm now aiming to push for a demo release for Release Something Weekend! So hopefully I can get that done :)
The mapping is pure excellence. I love it. You've got my sub.

Thank you very much!

Well, good news today! Yesterday was my last ever (scary) day of university, meaning I have absolutely nothing on my plate right now. This is working well on my part, given that I've decided to release a Blood Shard demo for Release Something Weekend!

The demo will probably cover the opening scenes in Arcontana (which you can see on the video I uploaded a day or two ago), and if I can stretch it then some parts with Drake & Saffy in Northhurst. I've already made the Arcontana intro in the RMVX version, so it's just a case of translating it over for that. The new Northhurst Woods segment is where most of the work will be, as I still have to finish mapping out the forest itself, and the Resistance hideout. They're both pretty small areas though, so I could probably push it!
