One day, Zelda invited Link to a game of hide-and-seek within a small corner of the Hylian foothills. Link, being the most brilliant sleuth Hyrule had to offer, boldly accepted. Declaring, "You could hide yourself in the lowest level of the deadliest dungeon and I'd still find you before you could finish counting to 100!"

But unbeknownst to Link, Zelda herself was the hide-and-seek champion 10 years running. "We'll just see about that." she said, smiling. "Remember that if I win, you have to be my personal servant for the entire month!" and with that, she ran off.

Link (knowning full well that a month under the princess' beck and call would be utter misery) armed himself with his trusty sword and boomerang. Excitement brimming over within him as another grand adventure began to unfold.

"Ready or not, here I come!"

You Can't Do That In Zelda! is my entry to RMN's Release Something Weekend.
Made in Zelda Classic, it is a short oldschool adventure in the vein of Zelda 1.
With a total of 7 dungeons, you can complete it in just a few short hours.
....That is, if you know where to find everything!

HOW TO PLAY
1) This game download comes packaged with Zelda Classic 2.5, and the game file already placed inside it.
2) So download it and extract the zip file in any directory of your choice.
3) Click on the game executable in the folder to start the program (the one that looks like a green button).
4) Begin by registering a file. Press the A button (Alt key by default) to tie that file to a custom quest. The "1st Quest, 2nd Quest" files come with Zelda Classic.
5) Once you've selected the game, press ENTER to begin! You can change the keybindings in the menu by pressing Esc.

So I wonder what timeline/iterations of Link and Zelda this takes place in the Hyrule Historia.

Look's neat, though. I'll get around to it once I finish my own RSW project.

Well, it takes place right before Skyward Sword of course!

I would play this but I have no idea how ZC works and I don't feel like old school Zelda. Sorry bro. :(

ZQuest essentially works like a regular 2D zelda game would... At least for the NES or GB era.

ISRIERIIIII!! How do I beat level 3? D:
I got the flute and found the old man who talks about a secret in the "island lake" and I can't figure out what to do as I have bombed everything! :(

You have to go back into the room with the big ol' arrow on the floor and push one of the blocks there. I was worried that part might be a bit too cryptic. Now I know! (There's also a super-secret block you can push in the room with the keese & shooting statues if you haven't found it yet)

I've also noticed that I've messed up the Dmap for that dungeon! DAMMIT. I'll have to patch that soonish...once any other bugs I didn't notice crop up.

Mkay. I've updated the download to Version 1.2. Which fixed up Level 3's map, fixed a bug with one of the overworld caves, and a few other small things.

I'm PRETTY SURE that's everything. So this should be the final version (fingers crossed)

Could you upload a separate download with just the quest file? I already have Zelda Classic installed and I don't really want to have separate folders of the same thing.

I'm not adding a whole new download because you're lazy, Ratty. :P Get it from here instead.

Am I being lazy for requesting a seperate download containing just the quest file, or are you being lazy by refusing to accomodate both those who own Zelda Classic and those who don't?

*insert wide grin here*
i can't do that in zelda because i can't get this to work. it loads zelda classic but it doesn't let me load quest files.

oh wait now. it's letting me pick a file now but when i do it says i need to create a new save file.

the first time i loaded the program it automatically started playing the original NES version. the menu option for load quest was greyed out. so i quit the program and reopened, now i can click load quest but it says to delete the save file with no apparent way of doing so.

I think I know what's up. To play a custom quest you need to create a new save file when it's at the "Register Your Name" screen. If you try to do so in-game it won't let you (greyed out option). When you start the program it should take you to the title screen and the file select screen first. Pressing the Z key while over a newly named file, will let you attach a custom quest to that file. THEN once you select it, it will start the quest you've attached to it.

Which icon in the Zelda Classic folder did you click? I'm new to this program too so I'm trying to figure out all it's foibles myself.
oh, that save file. that makes more sense, but man what an unintuitive way to make a program work.
I'm enjoying this but I've hit a dead end. I've done the first five dungeons and found the entrance to the sixth, but I need that stepladder item to get past the first room and I have no clue where it is. I thought the raft would help, but the only place I can use it so far just takes me to a shop which is disappointing. Any suggestions?

I wanted to try an experiment with the tiles in the game, so I had one act as a trigger: If you go inbetween the 3 statues on the left side of the room, you'll find a pressure switch that makes a bridge leading across.

...Is that kind of a dick move? I figured that when people saw there was no way to advance, they'd poke around the first room looking for some kind of clue. It never occurred to me that people would think to go and look for the stepladder, which isn't even in this game! *facepalm* I threw out all sorts of nasty tricks for the 6th and 7th dungeons. And making them intuitive is something I need more work with, it seems.
you could have locked the door, assuring the player that the solution is in the room. or you could have used the tile trigger mechanic in other places so by that point people know it's an option
Ah okay, thanks. I wouldn't call that a "dick move" but it's definitely not the first thing that comes to mind. Your idea was compromised by my memory of the original Zelda and the association I have between narrow impassible spaces and the stepladder. I think it might help to have some old man in an adjacent room say "You do not need the ladder to cross the pit" or something like that.
Alright, hopefully this will be the last time I have to ask for help, but I am planning on reviewing this for Media Madness Month and I'd like to finish.

I'm in the last dungeon in one of the "horns" on the map. There are two blocks in here that I can move pretty much anywhere, but I have absolutely no clue as to how to arrange them to trigger whatever secret is in here. A little help perhaps?

I think I know the room you're talking about: You have to move them to the middle of the leftmost and rightmost sides of the room.

The last room is pretty nasty too, so if you want to know how to get through that one:

It's basically an infinite loop that takes you through 2 different rooms that look exactly the same. The one you end up in first is not where you want to be: You want to be in the second one, but I can't remember if it's the higher or lower room. Once you're there, you just need to kill all the wizzrobes and push the leftmost block in the upper left. Then the stairs to the final boss will appear.
