1648 A.D., in a world filled with magic and mystery, the Time of Darkness reigned. A world-renowned swordsman and noble, Duke Dunstan of Edgard, sold his soul to the king of the Netherworld, Beelzen. He became Dunstan, the evil king of darkness, and with the direction of his otherworldly weapon, the Chaos Sword, he lead his army of demons, beasts, and barbarians to a war against mankind.

The other nations of the world responded with resistance, but resistance also met with death. Over time, Dunstan began to tear this world apart piece by piece, and would have forever plunged the world into darkness, if not for the effort of one man.

This warrior, whose name remains undocumented, stepped forth to challenge the wicked tyrant. He infiltrated Dunstan’s stronghold on Levi Island, and came out alive brandishing the severed head of the evil king himself. Suddenly, the world changed. The demonic creatures that swarmed the lands retreated to the depths in a panic. Powerful beasts and men became free of the evil king’s spell, reverting into gentle, peaceful sorts. This hero left without commencement, but the rest of the world rejoiced as the Time of Darkness finally ended.

35 years has passed since the defeat of the evil king. The Levi Island, his original stronghold, has become nothing more than an uninhabited, uncharted land mass. Strange beasts still roam this landmark, but they no longer pose a threat to mankind. Three major nations sought to colonize the land for its resources, disregarding its bleak history, and formed the three kingdoms of Levi: Kenonia, Resiliar, and Valoria. The Kingdom of Valoria is considered the weakest of the three, but it is also the subject of our tale.

Recently, the Ruler of Valoria, King Enguard IV, appointed a new knight to serve his kingdom, Oreh Calibur. Oreh is a lively young man with both a good hand in sword fighting an a noble heart, and in just a day after his inauguration into the Knights of Valoria, he was given the task of guiding a aerial trade ship destined for the Resiliar Kingdom. Everything appeared to go as planned, until a dreaded accident plunged the ship towards the southern isle near Levi, killing everyone on board except for Oreh himself.

Weary and distraught, Oreh seeks to return to his kingdom bearing the terrible news. However, he begins to notice that something has changed since his departure. Did he just encounter a creature not of this world? Reports throughout the island are surging with a sudden increased aggression with monsters, and an eerie chill can be felt through the nights. What could all of this mean?

Thus begins the quest of Oreh, as he travels the land of Levi to not only get back to his home, but find the truth.

Added the title design to my game page

I have now completed and added the design of my game title to this page. Finally this game can stand out a little. The chaos sword itself also has an extended handle per critique.

Next job is to learn how to use CSS. :(

YOU ARE BEING TOO AGGRO

RSW= feedback, so here is mine as I go along:
-The music is…ugh. At least the very first theme.
-While I suspect this is due to simply lack of time, the mismatch of charming pixel style and plain rtp is rather jarring.
-Nice conversion for the rtp (I’m guessing) into pixel.
-Player sprite seems a bit bulky and “complex” for the environment’s simplicity, but it’s nothing glaring.
-Omg that swishy cape. That’s just… *laughs at the silly thing*
-Minor nitpick, but the autoshadows+pixel style are rather ewwy.
-The continuous beeping when you run into interactive options is a bit irritating. It’d be ideal if it beeped once only, or even once every X seconds with a delay.
-Omg, I read OreO XD (most delicious character of the team, I’m going to guess).
-Also not major nitpick, but the font is slightly too “smooth” for the simpler pixels.
-The waits in text when inspecting things get old quick. :< They get in the way after the first couple times.
-It’s a pretty good move to teach the player (I was already doing it but STILL XD) that you can search pots and the like for items with the maid’s talk.
-The text is…odd sometimes. I’m not a native English speaking so I may be wrong here (sorry if that’s the case) but some of the stuff the chars say is not medieval, while it SEEMS (I THINK) you want them to speak sort of medieval-style. At times it just sounds off, but this could be just me.
-Omg, poor king doesn’t even have a CHAIR. Give the poor old man a place to sit XD
-It’s a bit redundant and unnatural how everyone keeps saying “oh hey, its you, the new knight appointed yesterday!”. We don’t need to hear it quite so plainly and so often :x
-Maybe I’m wrong, but the constant use of “me” instead of “my” makes me think of pirates XD
-Oh wow…ok, the music is…I’m not sure it fits the cutesy pixel style. It’s too…full? I’m not entirely sure, it’s just a bit mismatched.
-Honestly, what’s with the dialog? The tone and words keep going all over the place, it’s more jarring that if you just used “normal” words all the time x.x
-This went from medieval to pirate talk quite fast :x
-The captain’s death isn’t really very convincing. The knight has no reasons to be as attached as he acts :x
-Captain ARMOS’ parcel? Wasn’t it Stratos?
-I got killed by a dog? Woah. :<
-Ugh I gotta listen to the captian die again. Cmonn
-The balancing seems pretty shifty. I can kill enemies in one hit with the Mp skill, but if try to conserve mp and use normal attacks I get killed :/ And levels don’t restore Mp, so I’m pretty much fucked either way.
-Ugh, I can’t even rest at the abandoned hosue? Come ooon :<
-Why is green hair girl’s sprite wearing a modern cap… x.x
-Ok, the writing is just getting ridiculous now :/
-Got wiped by 4 imps after recruiting the kid and had enough.

Well…it’s something. It’s not bad, but right now, the weirdness and mismatch of the writing and the mix of resources is pretty jarring, making enjoyment a bit hard :<

Gameplay is…a bit bland. Mp runs out fast, and it’s not like I can do anything else. Combat seems determined to kill me even at the start of the game, which is never fun, my mp was not restored…it was not really enjoyable to play combat-wise as far as I got.

The graphics, those that were in pixel, were cute and I can see the full game like that being charming. The mismatch of styles right now makes it hard to enjoy.

The writing…the base isn’t bad, but the execution gets out of control FAST. Honestly speaking, it would be better if characters just spoke their lines normally without all the old style mismash, which is way out of control. I’m not an expert (I could be wrong here), but I’m pretty sure a lot of the expressions used are way out of context and don’t match.

That said, if the combat was given some spice and the writing was fixed a bit (and the graphics got finished, of course) I could see it being nice. As it is now, I could not enjoy it.

In any case, good luck with the game!

Somehow I'm not surprised this is a total slam. ('^_^ )

The one of the title or the castle?
I was kind of envisioning this to be a bit more like the Sega CD or early SNES port games which have a cleaner soundtrack, to explain the music choices. I could easily replace it with something more 16-bit, though.

Exactly the case. I want this to be a fully custom game in terms of visuals, but I didn't have the time to overhaul everything before the RSW release dates, so I tried to make the best of it for the sake of releasing something playable. Not surprised.

It was an attempt at making the character stand out from the environment.

Got it. I'll fix that.

Lol! I'm kind of considering on changing his name anyway (if you spell it backwards...), but I have no ideas right now.

Already replaced. I did warn that the RSW demo is heavily unpolished. :P

-The waits in text when inspecting things get old quick. :< They get in the way after the first couple times.
Would you prefer something akin to Dragon Fantasy: Heroes of Tsufana where the text are mostly just quick, to the point one-liners?

I admit the dialogue was about as rushed and poorly researched as a lot of things in the demo, but I'm glad you're telling this to me now as oppose to much later when I've released a disappointing attempt at a polished demo. I think I'll take your advice in "normalizing" the dialect of the writing, since I can see where you are coming from in that it's mismatched and odd.

-The captain’s death isn’t really very convincing. The knight has no reasons to be as attached as he acts :x
Can you elaborate on this?
author=Indrah
-Captain ARMOS’ parcel? Wasn’t it Stratos?
That's not the only place where there's a typo/mistake in this demo. And I thought I removed his original name from existence. >_>
author=Indrah
-I got killed by a dog? Woah. :<
The Wild Dog might be too overpowered. The attack damage reduction it does to you is massive and it hits harder. I'll nerf it for sure, or maybe just remove it from the area because its more of a gimmick-based enemy compared to Imps and Mawgrubs.

-Ugh, I can’t even rest at the abandoned hosue? Come ooon :<
Ouch. I'd say the biggest mistake I made with that area was not putting enough recovery options. I'll take your advice on levels restoring health and mana, though.

-Why is green hair girl’s sprite wearing a modern cap… x.x
Mainly to reference real world/modern day boy scout organizations. It may look too out of place, though.

So yeah, I really thank you for giving your feedback, and I'm sorry you couldn't enjoy this. I'll take everything you said to mind when making a new release. :)

Answers yo some of the stuff you asked:
-As for music, I meant frist the castle. It's...well, I didn't like the song. Later on I noticed there were some RTP bgms throws in there, so I guess it's not really a final selection. 16-bit music would do a better work, yeah.
-By the stops in text, I don't mean so much the cutscenes (where it's tolerable and acceptable) but when inspecting objects on the field. There is a rather annoying stop when you look at pots and the like, which gets old, REALLY fast, since you don't want to be stopped at every step when scanning a room.
-About the captain's death: Oreh acts like it's a big deal and he's like...sad? Why should he be? Sure, he's dying, but it was shown not a minute before that he disliked the captain, he would not put that much feeling into it, I think? He's actually acting like a person very near to him died, which is not the case. It's not that he can't be sad or distressed, but it feels wrong at the level he's doing it.
-Gameplay...I'd do somethign about the HP/MP resources, as well as overall mosnter balancing. Call me spoiled, but since I started putting autoheal after battles in our games I've become unable to enjoy anything else unless it's really balanced. The knowledge that you can go ALL OUT in every battle is liberating and makes the fights enjoyable. Somehing like a slight regen after battle would work, too. As it is it feels like battle gets IN THE WAY instead of part of the adventure, since it forces you to quickly lose resources.
-The cap...well. Unless you WANT your game to have goofy modern references WAY out of place in a medieval setting, I'd say scrap it. At least to me it was just jarring and out of place.

There it is~ And sorry for the harshness. And thank YOU for not get all defensive (as some people do), I was dreading it x.x

No biggy. While I'm doing quite a bit of experimenting with this, I still want a game others will enjoy. Thanks again.
Well, I was going to make an itemized list of stuff, but it seems Indra covered all the bases.
All in all, I love the direction this is going. The dialects can be a little bit much, but at least it shows that quality writing is at work. That's hard to find in RM games. Will definitely be looking forward to more.
sounds interesting, subbed and downloading at the moment. will let you know what I think later.

When can we expect an update?

I'd estimate about a month from now, maybe more. I'll still try to keep this page alive with some progress reports. Check the blog sections.
Ratty with a more serious DQ-style rpg? Nice demo, will hold out for the final product. When I first heard it was you, I almost feared the mesh of RTP characters and the big headed ones was a joke (after all, with games like Chrono Trigger Duh, who can blame me?). Glad to know it will all be custom when it's finally done.

Yeah, to get something playable for RSW I had to shove in quite a lot of placeholders. I'm still ironing out those placeholders now.

Ratty, I gotta say, our hero should really be a female...

When playing the demo, at times you see the hero from behind while walking and he has a mean swing to his hips.

Either change the gender or fix the story cause he might be g.. :)

This looks so amazing, though. Why didn't it get finished?

I began shifting focus towards Pokemon RMN and a few of the other community events. That, and based on the review and my own hindsight I actually want to give it an overhaul in terms of its gameplay and even its story to a degree, and the project is at an early enough stage for me to do so.

To clarify, I'm not outright cancelling the project. Rather, I'm giving it a reboot from its current state. With everything else I have going on, however, that might not happen soon, so I put the Hiatus mark on it (it's actually long overdue).

I'll probably wind up making him a player-made character at this point.
