Gerda and Kai have always lived peaceful lives next door to one another in their rural town of Middenstad, their rooms connected by a tiny rose garden loft that their parents built. While reading a book together that once belonged to Gerda’s grandmother, something strange happens to Kai. He becomes increasingly despondent and frightened, eventually locking himself in his room for weeks at a time.

On the first snowfall of the season, Gerda finds out he has run away from home early in the morning. With the help of her friends, Hansel and Gretel, Gerda finds him; but a mysterious woman who calls herself the Snow Queen has taken something precious from Kai who is now hateful and callous. He wants it back.
His three friends vow to help him, hoping the journey can also shed some light on his shifting personality.

Based loosely on the Hans Christian Anderson tale, The Snow Queen, Dragonfly Studios is proud to announce Winter Blossoms, an RPG with charming characters, item-based gameplay, and our usual showcase of custom artwork!

Vijf - A Mocked Victory

There's been a lot of really exciting progress being made, but I'm going to save that for the next update after we have a few more things done. The purpose of this update today is the victory screen. It's something I've been avoiding scripting because I didn't have a clear idea of what I wanted. I think I've found a layout that I'm happy with, but it could probably use some critiquing before I take the time to code it all in.

Somes notes:
  • This mock up is obviously very copy and paste and ugly. I'm looking for critique on the layout, not this image itself.
  • The game is fairly light on stats. The three you see there are the only that will increase with level up. You also learn skills through items and not levels, so there will be no new skills to display either.
  • The two lines at the top will be the description of the drop item that you currently have highlighted. You can move the cursor around to view the items.
  • The experience number will go down as the party gains experience and the bar fills. "Level Up" and the stat increases will "pop up" when a new level is earned.
  • The facial expressions will be a happier looking victory one. The level up one will probably be an even happier expression.

Feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. In particular, I'm not quite sold on the location of the "Exp: 10" text.

if i had an allowance, i would give it to rmn
This game looks pretty cool, how is it coming?
It's still relatively early in development content wise. The plot outline is complete and all the game systems are in place, so now it's just a matter of database, maps, and assets. And then our usual polish, polish, polish and test, test, test.

The goal is to have a demo out by late-Summer (late-August to mid-September), but it's not close enough to set any dates or anything. It will be a fairly substantial demo, three areas of a planned seven or so. We'd love to have the entire thing done by winter, but it's unclear presently how feasible that is.

I'll be posting a blog about some of the gameplay elements before the end of the week, but I will gladly answer any questions about the game at any time.
You the practice of self-promotion
Another Rachael game ... sub'd! So that means those others will remain on hiatus for a while, right?
Pretty much. Ethereal Dreams is still the big monster that will happen once we have enough experience and the second half of Castle Chase 2 has just been a giant confusing mess that we still need to figure out.

This one will be longer than our other complete games, but still on the short side. It's another go at improving our weaker areas.

Thanks for the update. I look forward to the demo once it comes out!
Hm i Wonder if i can pul somethi goff here/
I loved the snow queen and look forward to playing this game. BTW, in the original story (As you probably know) it was specks of the goblin's mirror that changed Kay/Kai's behavior. I hope you have the lady with the garden and the thieves in there too.
Hurrah another fan of the Snow Queen! It has always been my favourite fairytale growing up.
Yup~ Well aware of the goblin mirror. We're switching things up a little bit, having it only affect his eye and a different factor will come into play for his heart, but the goblin's mirror is still a part of the game. Just downplayed a bit.

The lady in the garden and thieves will also be there, though again, we've adapted things to fit our retelling a bit better. (main thing being, at least in the version I read, the lady in the garden was an elderly sorceress, we've dropped her age because of having an encounter with an elderly witch shortly before hand. lol Needed to shake things up.
We've posted designs for her and the thief that helps Gerda over on our blog before:

I hope you enjoy the game when it comes out~ Having input from people who know the original source is a thing I look forward to greatly~ :)
the character art style is wierd lol
We do not condone harassing other members by PM.
custum arts a plus
i like simple battles systems personally
with a party of 1-3 4 being acceptable(interchangeable members is ok as well)
special moves each character between 6-8 max 2-3 min
^ those are my personal preference

not gonna place my hopes in this game being finished ive got my hopes up for so many things and been disappointed
with custum drawings and scripts the mroe extra work thats done the less likely it will be finished which saddens me :(
still gl! :D
Well, if it makes you feel better, we have three completed games to our names, all of which contain some level of custom art, so we know how to finish a project. The only projects we haven't finished are the Overambitious First Project(tm) and a sequel that kept straying from what we wanted it to be. This project has a very reasonable scope (it's only a smidgen longer than OFP's last demo, location-wise anyway), and all the systems are done minus tweaking as we go. The goal is to have a demo that covers about a third of the game done before the end of the year, and the finished game sometime in the first half of next year.
why would i heal when i could equip a morningstar
i think the most important thing here is that your characters have actual chins now
And generally more facial variety~
Going to miss cutting dinner with dem chins though.
This looks really good so far (a couple things seem off, but I'm sure this has already been pointed out). The noses took a little to get used to, but after that, I really enjoy the artwork as it is noticeable and very original in its efforts. I look forward playing this in the future!
Really liked what I saw on your stream, Racheal.
The dialogue was especially well done: constant emoting, fun characters and that blinking effect when switching between talking people!

Looking forward to the release.
Nessiah's Seme-kun
Hnngh I cant wait to see this released. * w * It looks so promising and that charming art style + designs <3
Saw Unity play this just now. Gonna keep an eye on it.
You're magical to me.
Haha, I'm doing some testing and battle work for them, and forgot to mark the video private XD
