Sacred Reviews: Escape from Classroom

Intro

"Escape from Classroom" is an escape the room game. This genre is also sometimes referred to as room escape, escape game, locked room game, and so on. In short your playing someone that ends up locked in a room for some reason and they need to follow a series of clues in order to escape. A task that is made more difficult by needing to solve various puzzles. Though, I'd say the greatest puzzle surrounding this game is how it can have over a thousand downloads, but only a single review. After all, this game can be beaten in under ten minutes. At least it's possible to do that if you don't get hung up on the password puzzle, but I'll get into that later.

Story

You play as a nameless kid that constantly falls asleep in class for reasons unknown. I suppose the in-game explanation is that his math teacher is just so boring that he finds it impossible to not fall asleep. Admittedly, I remember having a pretty boring math teacher in high school and taking naps in his class. So, I guess I can relate to this nameless high school student. And for the curious I still managed to get an A in that class despite routinely napping through entire lessons.

At any rate the teacher decides to be a ted irresponsible in order to teach the main character a lesson. Unfortunately the teacher didn't count on the main character snoozing until about midnight and that they would get locked inside the classroom by the janitor. Admittedly the janitor locking him in the classroom was a bit irresponsible, but how many people would expect a high school student to be sleeping in a classroom several hours after the final bell was rung for the day?

At any rate when the main character finally wakes up from his midday snooze he attempts to leave but finds the classroom door locked. And instead of just pulling some chairs together and going back to sleep. He decides to explore the classroom in order to find a spare key to unlock the door and escape.

Spelling and Grammar

The game does contain a few errors in this area since the developer is not a native English speaker. Thankfully these issues never make it impossible to understand what is going on and are rather minor in the grand scheme of things.

And the game isn't long enough to make these minor issues a big enough annoyance to majorly complain about, but I don't feel like I would be reviewing this game properly if I didn't mention them.

Yeah the spelling errors in this game make me "sign" a bit too.

Gameplay

You interact with various objects in search of clues which when found will point you towards other objects. And considering the small size of the room you'll find most of the clues in a matter of minutes. The only one you might get stuck on is the password for the laptop since the clue can be interpreted in two ways. And the answer is not necessarily the first one that will come to mind for most players. I would say more, but I'd probably just be giving people the answer if I did so. And if your that desperate you can just take a look at one of my Let's Plays for this game for the information you seek.

And on a final note the c key doesn't send the chair back to it's starting position. To send it back you need to press the a key. At least that appears to be the case for most people. I'm guessing the discrepancy comes down to the developer having a different keyboard layout than most of the people playing this game on this site since numbuh1 is Vietnamese.

Major Bug

The game does contain a major bug because of an eventing error. At least I think it's an eventing issue that allows the player to cause the game to go black screen of death.

As you can see in the above gif you can repeatedly look behind the picture in the classroom in order to get multiple copies of the cabinet key, but when you do this the chair moves over every time you get a copy of a key. If you do this enough times the chair will eventually overlap the trash can and cause the screen to stay black since the game can't actually display this overlap. As such you end up stuck on a black screen of death and need to force the game to shut down.

Graphics

For the most part the game relies on the RTP for RPG Maker VX Ace but does contain a few original assets like making the text window look like a chalkboard with a spinning piece of chalk on it. And while it's a minor part of the look of the game it is appreciated since it does fit in with the game taking place in a classroom.

Sound

Sound wise the game is alright but it also draws entirely from the RTP for the engine. So the game sounds like a lot of other free games made using RPG Maker VX Ace.

Conclusion

"Escape from Classroom" is a short escape the room game that can be beaten in under ten minutes and takes very little effort to beat. In fact, the most memorable part of this game for me is that it's possible to crash the game by repeatedly getting copies of the cabinet key, but if your looking for a short puzzle game to kill some time this isn't a bad option for that.

Albeit I would argue that "Mysterious Room Escape" by Okami_Amaterasu is superior since it offers more variety in terms of the puzzles you'll need to solve in order to beat the game. Though it's about the same in terms of overall difficulty in my opinion since all of the puzzles in "Mysterious Room Escape" are pretty easy to solve.

But in terms of overall score I'm going to have to dock a point for this game having a major bug. Though I'm guessing I'm one of the few people to actually find it since nhubi didn't mention it in his/her review nor have I seen any comments about it on the game's summary page.
