Also, I think it's just about knowing what you're capable of doing. My "skill" as a "game maker" is limited, I know this. I know what I can do, what I can't do, and I work within my limits. I focus on what (I think) my strengths are, and I don't set out to do things that I know I cannot do, just to try to compete with everyone else (or hop on the latest trends).
It's all about being realistic. And I guess it helps that I'm not heavily into the boards, unless I come across a game I like. =P
