Crimson Memories
Crimson Memories is a fast paced action RPG set entirely within one tower. In this tower, once every 100 years, blooms a fruit reputed to have the power to cure all ills, And that time is now. This is exactly what Teodor is after, the power to save his beloved. But this tower isn't a friendly place, full of monsters, traps and the knowledge that you are not the only one looking for this fruit...

Story: 4/5
The story in the game is quite simple, but then it is quite a short game. Despite the basic story being simple I really liked the concept of it. And without giving too much away let’s just say that life leaves a trail of death in its wake.

Gameplay 4.5/5
Crimson Memories has effective action RPG gameplay and combat. While the majority of normal enemies are pretty easy to defeat with very little strategy the bosses make for an incredibly tough challenge and are near certain to kill you a couple dozen times before you learn their attack pattern. Boss battles have your fingers dance around the keyboard as you dodge back and forth trying to escape a flurry of attacks while still hitting the enemy. Any lapse in concentration can make you miss the small tell when they are about to release a devastating attack, and that can spell disaster!

Your likely to be very well aquatinted with this screen by the end!

Writing: 3/5
The story has very little writing but what you do get is of decent quality and tells the story well. It is most certainly more an action based game than story based however so expect to spend much more time fighting than talking.

Presentation

Audio:4/5
The BGM was chosen very well and suits the theme nearly perfectly. It really complements the combat without getting boring, something that happens in most games.

Graphics: 3.5/5
While graphics in the game are simple and retro they work very well. A game doesn't need high resolution or high detail graphics for them to be good. They are a very good fit for purpose.

Cornered by a gang of gargoyles.

Summary:
Crimson Memories is a very well made short action RPG with few weaknesses. I enjoyed playing it greatly and would highly recommend anyone who likes action RPGs giving it a play.

Tips for next project:
  • I would like to see a secondary weapon type added. Adding a bow for instance would open up a lot of possibilities for combat.

  • Extend the game slightly. While the game was fun I felt it was over much to quickly. A longer game would also open up the chance to have a more detailed story.
