Dormant Sky Kickstarter

Some time ago a forum member who commented on the project page expressed his/her willingness to contribute to the project. And when I considered the prospect of creating a Kickstarter for an Rpgmaker game, I found it pretty humorous. But after I researched and found that Dormant Sky would definitely not be the first or last to be submitted and get this end up Fully Funded, I had to give it a shot.

This also wouldn't be the first time I bucked a community trend with the way I go about game development. The primary thing that has always held back my vision for this game is the amount of resources I need for it to prosper. Something like Kickstarter would definitely grant me those resources. Truth is, I allowed development of the game to halt for the last year or so for multiple reasons that have dealt with my personal life, but with working with Vanit and the custom systems, one thing I have started to need is money. Custom systems need custom resources. The Battle System could have been finished and a demo out in 2010, if I had a few hundred sprites done for the character's animations.
Being a full-time college student hasn't exactly helped me in that area either. But I have expressed that I truly want to release this game. Even if the project fails to be funded, I will still do my best to make it happen. This method would just increase the rate of which exponentially.

Lastly, I'd like to compensate the people who have contributed to this project from day one. There are people who have taken shots at me for utilizing a team factor for this game but it boils down to the fact that there are people who really bought into my vision for the project even as an RPGmaker title, and contributed their talents. I want to do good by them, and those who look forward to Dormant Sky even today.

If you know of anyone who might be interested in donating to Dormant Sky please share the link.

Who knows, I may be able to get the game finalized in a completely different engine at the end of the day.

This is the vision of a guy who refuses to settle for mediocrity.
I believe that this fundraiser will live and die by the Rpgmaker community.

I'll meet you guys back here in 54 days.

Sion Out,

Ready, set, request $5000 and spend $100 on VX Ace and Secret of Mana traces.
The graphics are entirely custom mawk. What difference does it make how much each phase of the game costs? And If there's still an issue I'm not sure I'm understanding. Come on guys, I will make a conscience effort to remain civil on these boards but if the nonsense continues I'll just cease from posting. No need to go on here if there isn't any interest right?

Might as well cease now and cut your loses
go ahead and marty yourself if that's what your heart desires. as for the rest, talk is cheap! I'll believe it when I see it. my gut instinct, though, is telling me that someone who says they've bought a game's worth of custom graphics for under five thousand is either lying or relying on slave labour.
they could also just suck. that's always a possibility.

Anywho, good luck on this! Game making is a noble endeavour.
or be Secret of Mana edits but the jury is still out on that one

Well put sentiment. There's the door you literally just came back in through yesterday. Quick reminder, there's a knob.

And no, I'm not being mean, I just look down on this fair-weather mentality.

Wow, never saw so much hate concentrated in one place before....
Then this must be the first thing you've ever seen.

The anger in this topic isn't exactly tactful, but the OP's manipulative tactics and constant portrayal of everyone asking him questions as part of some slavering mob more than warrant some degree of frustration. It doesn't help things that for someone who said that his project is done out of love for the community, he only seems to care for it when it's giving him money. I invite you to read, really read this topic without skimming it, without going with the first and easiest impression, and tell me then if all you see is people hating on an adorable underpuppy.

And I feel I should clarify one thing: Right now, I am more or less certain that Sion is a liar and a thief. That does not mean I am his enemy. If he wants to make a game, I'm not going to conspire against him or anything like that. In fact, I wish him good luck with completing it. This is a wonderful opportunity to prove us wrong if he feels he's capable -- pretending that we're automatically against him because we carry a few well-justified doubts about his process and his legitimacy is, frankly, stupid, and you should all cut it out. Everyone working in RPG Maker assumes the most extreme us-vs-them paradigm in the most petty situations, and it's getting old. It's possible to be scathingly critical of someone while still wishing them the best. You've had parents, haven't you?

Ok, I just took the time (only about 20 minutes, but I'm impatient!) to read through this whole blog and I am starting to realize where the "hate" is coming from. I guess, like the OP, I mistook "overzealous concern" with "direct attack". I think part of the problem is the fact that a lot of the legal accusations (I use this term lightly here) were open to the public. Not that there is anything wrong with this, but some people recoil if they are called out in a public setting, let alone in front of a group of peers. I agree that there should be some form of transparency, but letting the guy know what he's doing wrong "behind the current" and letting him acknowledge his mistake on his own may have gone a ways toward things getting done more effectively.

I will agree (after reading as much as I have) that he seemed a bit evasive with some of the questions. It's a moot point now, but I don't think the legality of the use of RM2k3 really sank in. Honestly, I wasn't FULLY aware of the implications of using the engine until now (I only thought you couldn't profit from it, but now I know that using it AT ALL is a no no...).

I also think the tone of the incoming concerns (as you mentioned) was pretty harsh. Again, the more a person feels attacked, the more likely they are to recoil negatively to said concern, even if it is to the benefit of that person. (I am speaking out of experience on this one... burnt a lot of bridges...)

Either way, I hope that everything pertaining to this project turns out well. I rescind my comment about the "hate" in this blog, but I still think things could have been done and said differently (on both sides) to avoid a lot of the anger, which is definitely there.

Now, I should jump off this high horse before it'll become suicidal to do so...

Critical, yes. "Scathingly" critical, I don't know... It all depends how far things are taken; Now it turns out Sion can't even post a screen in the screenshot topic without people bringing up the issue again. There's also an status on the subject. And something tells me it's going to be like that for some time... Give it a rest! He's already got his 5k and nothing you do will change that.

At least, stop throwing around words like: "thief" or "liar" so non-nonchalantly (Talking about petty exaggerations xD). Truth is, the only thing you sell in Kickstarter are promises, and people know this. At this point in time, when the whole internet has had this debate many times over, I refuse to believe anyone willingly giving away its money is being "robbed" or "lied to". And Sion doesn't owe anyone any explanations about that money. Specially to those who didn't donate (us). ...Just leave it to time and his conscience.

Don't like this kind of practices? Fine, let's have (yet another) discussion about Kickstarter projects. Let's change the site's policy so if a game starts a Kickstarter campaign it's hold to the same standards than commercial games, and it's required to fully disclose budget information if it wants the support of -this- community. THAT I could get behind of. THIS? It's gotten old already.

The issue of what? Spending money on what seems like direct copy of the rips he used without much diversity? :x

ps. I never called him such things but I was worried at how his practice will encourage others AND would bring a bad name to the community because of it. As well as false hope to backers that the game will still have the same quality. He's free to prove me wrong and I'd like to see how he can do it with 5k, but as of now my feedback on the screenshot topic stands.
The origin of the graphics is a genuine concern, but it worries me that from now on people won't be able to see anything Sion does without a price tag attached to it; Not being able to judge things based on their own merits is a problem... Also, his money is his to be spend however he wants. As long as the graphics are not actual rips, I don't find their resemblance so objectionable.

As for: "a bad name to the community" (Damn, that's harsh!) While I don't think anything Sion did was wrong-wrong, I do believe we can hold ourselves to better standards. So, again, let's talk about it, but let's take the discussion elsewhere.

Edit: It's all well, then. But I'm really going to follow my own advice and stop posting in this blog...

I saw that screenshot thinking he was still using rips so I wasn't planning to comment on it. Until someone said it's CUSTOM. I'd comment on it being a blatant rip-off regardless of it was a paid project or not. But I pose no hostility over it. I am concerned however for the creator on how the others will view when I did comment on it.

I don't mind him spending money as I said, since he is free to prove people wrong. But not everyone is judging it based on that it's from his kickstarter. I'm just surprised that it was assumed that the comments towards his screenshot was based on the reaction over this blog.
