A curse of classic clichés in Chromia!

Curse of Chromia is a game realized by Dustie in 2013, then re-released updated in 2015, and this is the version I played. From what I know the new version has all the bugs squashed and is a pretty good classic RPG Maker VX Ace fantasy jrpg.

The plot is notthing really new: the Evil Emperor of the Evil Empire wants to conquer the world, but the Kingdom of Alcaria stands against him (wait, this sounds almost like the plot of the Asterix comic series!), and we play as Eric, a young student at a military school that is attacked and this is when the his greatest adventure that will determine the fate of the whole world starts!

This game has combat! A team of heroes against huge monsters is nothing new, but that's what we love about Rpgs!

Game is classic jrpg adventure with a party of heroes that have to face different obstacles while exploring dungeons, from different combat encounters (that may become a bit repetitive after a while, I must admit this) to enigmas like the classic ever popular boulder pushing puzzle. For what concerns combat, that's rather classic, but luckily there is a difficulty selector that you can use every time you want to make things harder or easier, mind that there is no reward to play a hard difficulty, anyway I'm glad that there's the option if someone really wants!

Another good thing is that you have more than the usual four playable characters, and this means that you can select your party members from a larger group. It's still something that other games don't do, and for me more is better!
Anyway it's still a bit boring and repetitive after a while even if I admit there are some cool cutscenes and interesting parts, like when you have to rebuilt a town. Nothing really deep or complex, but it's still something different from pummeling monsters!

This game has ships! What Jrpg is complete without a way to explore the world? Ok, we're the heroes, but the boat builder will do a great service!

The story: well here nothing new, we just are attacked at the military school, so we escape through some caves and contact the king. He tells of four shards that the Evil Empire wants to resurrect some ancient evil. So guess what? Eric is tasked to find them before the Evil Emperor gets them! As expected some characters joins him, but it's a bit weird that just two of them have a real reason to help him, the others... join for almost no reason! "Oh you found my pendant... ok I'll join you in your epic quest!". No, seriously this happens for real! Let's say that the story is not the strong point!

On the other hand, while the game uses RTPs, I admit that the resources are used pretty well, the monsters and sprites are good. Mapping is also pretty good, towns and dungeons are well made and varied, and it's clear that the developer invested some time and care when making them.
Music is ok, unfortunately the use of Secret of Mana themes and other classics and Rtp music doesn't make this game stand out, and on the contrary makes it look like a rather average entry, and it's a pity, because for a first game this is not bad at all!

This game has ships! In the sense of concept of a fictional couple! Wait, "Romance" sounds better, I guess! I'll leave you alone, so you'll have some privacy, so let's go to the...

Final Verdict
Curse of Chromia isn't a bad game, it's just a classic, not really original Jrpg made with rpgmaker. While it's not terrible, has no bugs or problems of any kind, it has a rather "generic" appearance ("thanks" to the use of very classic RTPs) and also some common tropes that are pretty much unrealistic, like the weird desire of any future party member to join the team apparently without a good motivation. It's something we've already seen a thousand times, still it's pretty odd, isn't it?

In any case this is a pretty ok game! If you are an absolutely fan of the genre and want to play them all, do along. If you have few time you can probably choose another game. In any case if I remember well this took me about six-seven hours to complete, ok?
Bye for now!
