Legend of Pope and Duke

Legends of the Roguelike are anything but roguelike. Levels aren't randomly generated and death is as permanent as my mom's perm. There is no need for such a name as the game is interesting and enjoyable and would be interesting and enjoyable under different name. It ought to go with something less generic and more truthful. Because Legends are RPG utilizing ATB system. Inspiration is drawn from various sources. Western RPGs, and Diablo in particular, seem to be the biggest inspiration for the author in terms of graphics in opposition to said battle system, which is easily retaken from Square's games like Final Fantasy.

I chose priest for my first run and named it Pope.

He got slaughtered by the very first chest he had opened.

Story
Although your character is just plain boring adventurer without background or purpose, purpose to enter the dungeon and kill, except to do so for gold and glory. He is your classic nameless hero who can become a game changer. There are hints on backstory and lore in the game and dialogues with other adventurers are well-written. This is all good, but nothing outstanding. Standard of the genre. What is of real interest and neat as hell is this blog post. Conmon (author of the game) described lota lore in it. And It's interesting reading. The point is that game made with such a love has definitely different feel than game without it. Events have their inner sense, Characters' motivations are caused by their origin or guild rules. Even in case it doesn't make game any better It stays being neat gesture.
Again, Its kinda hard to say which case Legends are. The game is far from finished and my guess is that even if it were, Conmon wouldn't give up his setting so easily and He would use it either for sequel in Dungeon Master's fashion or differently flavored epic RPG. This level of depth suggests that need to make the game itself sprang from his love for the setting.

Gameplay
It's claimed that Legends are hard. It's not so completely true. The beginning is difficult as you are new to the system and your character is relatively weak. For my second run I was exploring depths of the tomb with thief and made it through with relative ease.
In battles your turns are extremely often and you are relatively strong and so is your foe. That means that they are quickly over. Skills are fun to use and effective enough. The only problem is, that as battles are really often, they got repetitive even in this demo. Completed Legends were supposed to be eight times bigger. It's problem of single character party, which is without any change (additional support character, option to swap your class). You don't need to apply various strategies on various enemies. They can all be easily killed either by basic attack or combination of basic attack and poisonous arrow (in case of thief, other classes are bit more challenging).
Balancing is solid and I like the way I'm getting more and more powerful. It could be problem in further progression as i was almost unbeatable by the end of the demo.
Level design is solid and reminds me of real roguelikes. That is a good job. Bonfires as save points are nice addition. My only complain is technical bug where the game was lagging itself in higher chambers whenever there was visible enemy in the room. It didn't appeared in second region, tho. Probably some nasty eventing or messy application of plug-in.

My second run was with thief Duke. He was getting further and further

Art
Selection of music is good and It does make the job of illustrating the situation. However It doesn't stand out. Some songs are fairly nice to listen and they definitely don't disturb you with their intensity. Music playing at bonfire is positive, battle music is dramatic, melody playing during exploration is slightly mysterious.
Graphics are solid as well. Formerly, they were planned to be reminiscence of these from original Rogue and use symbols of ASCII. That was changed and it was for the better. Maps are using 2k3 RTP and are quite nice to look at. Walls are illogical as they ignore perspective.
What shines the most are sprites and battlers. Battlers are outstanding and I adore their creator. They are the reason why i downloaded this game. Sprites for playable characters are especially well designed. Animations of your hero are detailed and fluent.

Conclusion
Development of Legends was probably ended long time ago for lack of response. It's a shame as they had their potential and could easily become classic rm creation. It's kinda another hidden gem. More of the fragment of that hidden gem. I want to play more. Common, Conmon.

Wow! That was a much higher rating than I expected for such a buggy demo!

First of all, thank you so much for taking the time to review this (especially with all the screenshots and captions and everything. Awesome! Secondly, you'll be happy to know that I am still working on the project, although due to my inability to work on projects for long periods of time before I start going crazy, it has been on the sidelines for a while.

Seriously, I'm working on about eight different games right now.

Needless to say, it's still in development, and I've been trying to iron out all the bugs:
- How stupidly easy it is playing as a Thief
- Impossibly high encounter rates
- Overpowered enemies, underpowered classes
- Getting past Lvl. 5-7 and becoming unstoppable
- And more!

That, and I've been trying to incorporate more lore into the game, but in a clever and masterful way, like in Dark Souls. Also, as for the "single party member" bit, I thought about adding in more characters, but as the game is designed for a solo run, I just don't think it would work - unless I took another page from the Dark Souls playbook and made "summonable" characters, like some of the NPCs you encounter in the dungeons.

Anyway, I can say that much love went into the making of this game, and it is sloppily put together in some parts, but that's half of its charm (unless I fix the issues, of course). I am very pleased with your review, and thanks again!

I'm glad you do.
These all are things to make your gam even better. And I thing, that adding more party members can help to solve your problem with getting overpowered. The game can get drastically tuffer with them. On the other hand, You can do that without them without making initial floors an xp farm. "Summoning" or some Pokemon system should do the job.
