Introduction

I'm Jeffrey Nordin and over the past year I made this game, The Logomancer. I've always wanted to make video games, so I finally decided to do it. I quit my job and moved to Seattle after completing the game in the hopes that it can be used as a resume to get me a job in game development. The Logomancer ended up being very a personal story and a lot of my own neuroses, insecurities, hopes, and philosophies are in the game. Write what you know, as they say.

The game should take around 10 hours to complete.

Game Overview and Plot Outline

The Logomancer is a JRPG without killing. Conflicts are resolved through argumentation, logical discourse and persuasive speech. Mastering the elements of rhetoric will allow you to make your point to even the most stubborn audience. The people you meet are your 'weapons' and the skills they teach your 'magic'. Why not befriend an old editor and learn about the power of Proofreading? Or assist a schizophasic blacksmith to learn how to Doublespeak?

In the world of the Logomancer, everyone is connected to a communal dreamworld known as the Mindscape. During sleep, everyone interacts together inside this strange mental world. The mind is a powerful tool in the world of dreams and the few exceptional individuals with the ability to build dreamworlds for others to participate in are called Logomancers.

Ardus Sheridan and his apprentice John Marrow are negotiators for the dream commodities company Powell-Mercer and have been sent to the seaside city of Ordolus in order to finalize a contract with the region's most recently discovered logomancer, Glenton Dahl. The story starts there as the duo reaches the city limits. What is the nature of the dreamworld that everyone is connected to? What is the true nature of logomancy? Is the emotion felt for a fictional character different from the emotion felt for a real person? Did the ancient peoples of Callosum like slow-roasted brisket? Play the game to find out the answers!

Using the classical elements of persuasion, social interactions become rhetorical battles. A 'boss fight' could just be trying to convince a store owner to give you a new suit free of charge. This means that stats like 'persuasion', 'confidence', and 'elocution' are much more important than 'strength', 'dexterity', or 'magic attack'. If you've ever wanted to play a Final Fantasy 6-styled JRPG wherein you could improve your characters' Perspicacity, then this game is probably for you.

Influences

The Logomancer draws inspiration from the following sources, so if any of these pique your interest, there's a good chance there's something for you in this game: The Lost Room, Inception, Dark Souls, Final Fantasy 6, Persona 4, House of Leaves, Silent Hill 2, and the music of two DTs - Dream Theater and Dark Tranquillity.

So, it's been like, 3+ years since the Steam version's released... I guess this one isn't gonna be updated to that better version??

This version isn't bad, it's just that there's better.

Also, killed Malebaldur's shadow before Malebaldur, and the game crashed. Well, learned not to do that now...

----

Nevermind, this stuff was added in the Steam version:

Plus, I don't think Eventide is immune to Self-Loathing... I managed to stun-lock her with it...

And, I can't find the White Raven student, but I've finished Bazaar Encounter...
I wouldn't say the combat is quite "regular RPG" fare, it's a lot more reliant on buffs, debuffs, and status effects (including some unorthodox ones) than most RPGs, and tends to demand more tactical investment even for relatively low level battles. But it's true that the differences are more of style than of kind.
Unfortunately it is essentially a regular RPG with a different coat of paint. Taken on its own merits I think it's very good, but if you were expecting something more original you will definitely be disappointed.

If you're looking for a true dialogue-based game, might I suggest Exeunt Omnes?
I'm not sure but first battle look like paper, stone, scissors - this is something different than i thought. It isnt suppose to be like - dialogue decisions during batle - not just rename - paper, stone, scissors mechanics ?

eww! auto skipping text sucks!

when giants get to close to you you cannot move you need to hope they move far enough away

the seaside bazaar seriously sucks...probably the worst area of the game...these doucebag npcs for interact with you. they even have a bit of a leeway on interaction distance...ask you to buy something...if you say no you get into a fight...but...they don't disappear...so good luck getting away after the battle >.>
even worse! if you say yes... theres no fight but the same problem...you cant run...thus your screwed...

Final horizon = Overpowered as hell! and only 250 exp for him to! should be way more!

i take back what i thought was the worst. the haunted bell maze is the worst. so much so i had to give up...

General Did not finish 5H 30% completion
its hard to say how i feel about this game. it was amusing at first but i think too much content was thrown in and what was fun at first became quite dull.
especially in my case when you get the considerable text dumps of information that i would soon forget anyway. and this is multiple times even.

i liked how the battles had strategy to them but it would of been less tedious if it was limited to only significant battles and less focus on the gear and custom stat building.
it felt like the game aimed to far in too many directions.
especially with the puzzles...a few of them were astounding headaches.

the characters were pretty meh other then the lead which i grew tired of at some point.
i could not finish it.had no inspiration to.

Overall
as the developer put a lot of work into this and it shows...i don't want to say i don't recommend this.but i would suggest playing this more for the sake of having something time consuming over anything else.

unable to do

Was unable to figure out the hat shop puzzle in mind scape

Was unable to figure out the water cavern puzzles (something about a diamond and 4 digits)

Was unable to escape the haunting memories quest bell maze with cynthia
@BlueOctober

It will be fixed! The problem was that the input scripts were interpreting the Keyboard commands and Xbox controller commands in a weird way (for instance, the X button and A button were getting confused). Until the update is available, you should be able to get through the Haunted Memories Aspect of Blood map by using only keyboard controls.
I had to stop playing because the quest "Haunted Memories" (I think that's what it was called) was too broken to even play. I would go to open a door or read a note and it would teleport me to the punishment room but the text would still appear as if I were at the previous location. When I tried to knock 3 times on the door with the yellow curtain (and yes, I made sure no rules were broken) it would just send me to the punishment room without any explanation. Does anyone know if this will be fixed?

I can't remember that very well, but I think the number of times you're told to knock conflicts with the rules about knocking on doors? Try all the options for knocking on it.

I've tried every conmbination of 1 knocks, 2 knocks and 3 knocks. The only thing i can think is maybe I need to break the rules and then try knocking.

So I saw this on Tvtropes and I've got a couple of questions.

Haunted Memories seems buggy. In the first part with Artus, I've got one of the eyes of greed, and I found the diary with and the place where you can enter the dream with the beach and tower. It says, you need to knock 3 times on the door with the curtains, and I've found that door. It also says you need to pass through the red water to get forgiveness before doing that, which I've also done. So when I knock three times on the door, nothing happens. Actually it teleports me to the holding room and then askes how many times I want to knock. So, it seems like I'm missing something, but I've gone through these steps multiple times, and I don't see a way past.

OH HEY, so turns out I can't read bloody area names very well.

Look, just pretend I was never here, yes?
So, approaching the ending... Got a question.

I've gone through GlitchTopia in the Forgotten Plantation, which is one of the more horrifying things I've had to do this month. XD (Long story short - video game glitches are one of my biggest phobias/nightmare fuel/ARRRRGH things, to the point where it's not any fun) But I'm DETERMINED to get through this awesome game so my sufferings be damned. That one area where everything changed every 5 seconds literally made me physically ill.

Anyway, now I'm at a bed and a hole in the ground. It's giving me a paragraph sin and numbers and somesuch, then asking me to input four digits. ...Huh? Am I missing something here? The other puzzles I worked out fair enough, but this one... doesn't seem to have anything IN it. How do I find this bloody number?

And please, PLEASE, for the love of everything holy and wonderful, don't tell me I have to back to that bloody glitch room. :P Or at least, if you're GOING to tell me that, don't be cryptic because if I have to go back I don't want to be in there long. ><

...It's going to be the bloody glitch room, isn't it? ...Goddammit. ><
This is an absolutely thrilling game. I've never played an RPG this detailed and rich before. The dialogue is immersive and very good, and what you've done with the battle system, the whole argumentation theory thing, is ingenious. I've played an hour and a half into it and I'm loving it so far, despite being stuck in some areas (due to my own stupidity of course) and being completely lost in the city and forgetting about the map. I am currently doing a Lets Play series of Logomancer on my Youtube channel, which I hope will be an amazing experience for the viewer and I.

I hope this game gets the exposure it deserves, its really great and deserves a huge load of recognition. Good work!
This is... No words could describe how unique, amazing and sophiscated this game is.

Real review coming soon...
Talk to the NPC by the northwestern pond in Ordolus for a hint, then look around the Mindscape. It'll be very obvious when you're in the right area. I forget if the note next to the weather totem has a hint for the proper area, but you should probably look at that if you haven't already.

Hat puzzle.

I don't get it, though. I solved the hat puzzle, then got the Weather Totem. Then what do I do? Am I supposed to cast the rain to summon Eve? If so, how do I go about doing that?

When you say you beat the bonus boss, which one do you mean? Eve Angelus, I presume? There's another one. If you beat Eve Angelus you have what you need to get past the boulder.
Oh, haha oops, I mistook Eve Angelus for Eventide the lady shopkeeper ~ ~. I actually beat the Final Horizon. So, erm...Where's Eve Angelus, then?
I thought there would be a new map when I entered New Cadence. But turns out that is the ending...

Ha, me too! Maybe in a future story...

And the "golden ending" mentioned on TV Tropes is just the true ending. If you beat the final boss you've seen it.
Oh well, the bonus boss was just too easy even without the ultimate skills...But it's been fun :)

Now, the only secrets I haven't checked yet or are not so sure of that I've read in TVtropes are:

1) Secret shop after beating Eventide and Final Horizon
2) Golden ending (I'll probably look into that another time)
3) The Composer's lessons (I didn't know the Composer gives lessons until now. So, how do I meet the Composer to get his lessons?)
4) Indentation in the boulder (not sure what is the indentation I'm supposed to be looking for ~ ~)

Otherwise, it's been a fun game. I just wish the game could have been more in depth. Initially, I thought there would be a new map when I entered New Cadence. But turns out that is the ending...
