Introduction

I'm Jeffrey Nordin and over the past year I made this game, The Logomancer. I've always wanted to make video games, so I finally decided to do it. I quit my job and moved to Seattle after completing the game in the hopes that it can be used as a resume to get me a job in game development. The Logomancer ended up being very a personal story and a lot of my own neuroses, insecurities, hopes, and philosophies are in the game. Write what you know, as they say.

The game should take around 10 hours to complete.

Game Overview and Plot Outline

The Logomancer is a JRPG without killing. Conflicts are resolved through argumentation, logical discourse and persuasive speech. Mastering the elements of rhetoric will allow you to make your point to even the most stubborn audience. The people you meet are your 'weapons' and the skills they teach your 'magic'. Why not befriend an old editor and learn about the power of Proofreading? Or assist a schizophasic blacksmith to learn how to Doublespeak?

In the world of the Logomancer, everyone is connected to a communal dreamworld known as the Mindscape. During sleep, everyone interacts together inside this strange mental world. The mind is a powerful tool in the world of dreams and the few exceptional individuals with the ability to build dreamworlds for others to participate in are called Logomancers.

Ardus Sheridan and his apprentice John Marrow are negotiators for the dream commodities company Powell-Mercer and have been sent to the seaside city of Ordolus in order to finalize a contract with the region's most recently discovered logomancer, Glenton Dahl. The story starts there as the duo reaches the city limits. What is the nature of the dreamworld that everyone is connected to? What is the true nature of logomancy? Is the emotion felt for a fictional character different from the emotion felt for a real person? Did the ancient peoples of Callosum like slow-roasted brisket? Play the game to find out the answers!

Using the classical elements of persuasion, social interactions become rhetorical battles. A 'boss fight' could just be trying to convince a store owner to give you a new suit free of charge. This means that stats like 'persuasion', 'confidence', and 'elocution' are much more important than 'strength', 'dexterity', or 'magic attack'. If you've ever wanted to play a Final Fantasy 6-styled JRPG wherein you could improve your characters' Perspicacity, then this game is probably for you.

Influences

The Logomancer draws inspiration from the following sources, so if any of these pique your interest, there's a good chance there's something for you in this game: The Lost Room, Inception, Dark Souls, Final Fantasy 6, Persona 4, House of Leaves, Silent Hill 2, and the music of two DTs - Dream Theater and Dark Tranquillity.

I played this for a bit. it's quite impressive, probably one the most unique rm games I've ever played. when I get deeper into it, I'll probably give more feeback.
Just looking at the description makes me feel the need to link to this game I played recently.
Great concept and interesting style. The dialogue and general flow of the game is organic and doesn't feel forced.

It's probably the most sophisticated game I've played and will definitely appeal to a more mature audience. Keep that in mind when evaluating feedback on forums like Greenlight.

I played that a few days ago.really good flash game.
This looks really exceptional. I'll try to review it on here if I end up liking it.
Great game, I nominated it for many Misaos. I like how the characters, the tone, the world and the gameplay blend so well.

It reminded me I had fun with Phylomortis. Hopefully your game won't be attacked like Phylomortis was. I feel your level of language and style of humor deserve their time in the spotlight.

Help! Help! Help!
I'm stuck, I have some problems completing it.

I'm stuck : how to get the Eye of Despair (after 1st ending)
is there a bug in these (mindscape from Epherus's guest bed) :
I can't open the 3 knocks door, even if I use a saved file without rules broken
I can't reset the broken rules counter
I can't go to the red water room coz there's no door to break a rule on
nothing special on east beach ?
No way to go further in "Aspect of Imprisonment : Escape" (shadows don't re-spawn if I touch them)

loose ends :
1) the 2 chests in the water cave (the practice one with picture, and the 4-digits one)
2) combination for Oppangelsk's, the hatmaker, house
3) chest seen in Sindarin du Vide's (the editor) house in the Mindscape
4) I've got 9 x salt, but nothing happens with fountains (didn't find a rainstorm)
5) the girl stuck up the cliff in the city
6) something left of the stair descending to Nikolai's spot (before Comfortable Routine)
7) I had silver coins when fighting the Soldier with the cursed book. He got angrier seeing them. If I didn't have any would it change anything?
8) I sold Gammin his watch back. Tim, the son of the merchant, was looking for one later. Did I miss much?
9) In Final Horizon's mindscape, left of screen there's a rock "with indentation"

I still wish the town colors was less hurting on the eyes...
Hi!!
It seems to be an excelent game!!
But how could I download it?

Thanks!!

I'm glad you liked the game! And thanks for the nominations too!

On to the first block of spoiler text:

There's no glitch here. After completing Epherus' side quest, Cynthia and John's solo areas are no longer accessible, but that's okay because there's nothing you need down there.

Although it's true you can't break the knocking or running rule after returning to the Comfortable Routine there was a third rule if you'll recall about candles.

(I hope I didn't accidentally delete the text that mentions that.)

Breaking the candle rule will allow you to get into the Red Water Room again. You're on the right track to get the Eye of Despair, don't give up!

I don't know what you mean by the last statement about not being able to get any further in the Aspect of Imprisonment: Escape, can you elaborate (the shadows are supposed to disappear if you touch them, by the way)?

And now to address the loose ends:

1) This is a very hard puzzle. Good luck with it! To give you an idea, it was inspired by a puzzle in Riven (the sequel to Myst).
2) Another puzzle! Hooray, deduction!
3) Tantalizing, isn't it?
4) Like you said, you didn't find a rainstorm (but you still can!).
5) You can actually talk to her by standing near her and looking in her direction.
6) Don't know exactly what you meant here, but maybe it was the purple background showing through?
7) Yes!
8) You didn't miss anything, but noticing that Tim was looking for a watch is a subtle clue to his back story (which isn't necessary to know, but you can draw some conclusions based on evidence from the quest).
9) There sure is! Weird, right?

To andreroberto:

The download link is at the top of the page!
EdoAnimus, I'm still stuck. Are there private messages here in case you want to keep your mysteries intact?
Talk about a funny contradiction :
to get the Eye of Despair, don't give up!

So I went back to the Aspect of Blood with your kind reply in mind. This is still after the 1st ending. Don't worry, you mention clearly in the game that the rules changed. I got the Left Eye of Greed by stepping on candles and being almost drown in red water a few times. Then I'm totally lost as for the Right Eye of Despair. In my first post, I was listing many things I tried, and posibilities I saw so that you could give me the best hint. Or the clearest solution. It prevents me from moving on in the main quest.

possibilities that I tried, but didn't work :
there's the spot where "there was something here before"
the door with the curtain won't open (even with 0 mistakes)
many mistakes / many near drownings in red water / many waiting in time room
the beach is quiet

It's just one more possility in my desperate search for the Eye of Despair. I'm such a good spy that the Shadows never got me the first time. I didn't get to notice they disappeared before.

And now to address the loose ends:

Thanks, I'll keep trying your top puzzles
1) the 2 chests in the water cave (the practice one with picture, and the 4-digits one)
2) combination for Oppangelsk's, the hatmaker, house

6) Don't know exactly what you meant here, but maybe it was the purple background showing through?
here :

7) Yes!
Awesome! Is there a way of getting rid of the silver coins?
I miss the time when it was possible to get these answers with a free game editor

8) You didn't miss anything, but noticing that Tim was looking for a watch is a subtle clue to his back story (which isn't necessary to know, but you can draw some conclusions based on evidence from the quest).
I could get anybody in court with what I have, but I have an idea.

5) You can actually talk to her by standing near her and looking in her direction.
but she says she is still stuck up there ...

As for the rest, (items 3, 4, 9) and I'll keep my eyes open as I move along the story.
I'll enjoy their tantalizingness to its fullest!
To Karkwa:

I had a brain fart about the Eye of Despair, sorry. The Eye of Greed is what you get from the Comfortable Routine. The Eye of Despair is elsewhere. If you work on some of the other loose ends you mentioned you'll probably come across it!

5) She says she's stuck but there's nothing more to it. She's just an NPC with amusing dialog.

6) That is just part of the background, there's no way over there and if you did get over there it wouldn't do anything. The background at the long staircase is supposed to be a bit stranger the deeper down you go.

Good luck finding the true ending and let me know what you think when you finally get there!

To anyone else wondering what's inside the spoiler text: It's some tips for locating items near the end of the game, so if you're not interested to know just yet, don't click!

I think that's an error with DirectX, so make sure you have the latest version of that from Microsoft.
Thanks!!

I am playing the game and it seems
excellent since the begining!
I liked the musica and atmosphere!

With Touhou - Wandering Souls, I mentionned your work of art in the 2013 "OFFICIAL" MISAO PREDICTIONS AND DISCUSSION THREAD.
ThatBennyGuy said : Thanks Karkwa! Those games definitely went under the radar. Added them to the list.
I wish you well and many more players for your game!
I've just started playing this, and since I've committed to turning in a review of it for Reviewrim, you're pretty much guaranteed to get a review out of me in a matter of days.

I'm a bit confused by the content in one of the puzzles though, and I'm afraid I may have inadvertently engaged in a bit of sequence breaking. I decided to explore the area a bit before talking to Glenton, and picked up the Louder Than Words quest. After checking around town, I went to the Water Spine Cavern, and investigated the puzzle there. I figured from the content of the drawings that Udumo must be behind them, but I also assumed that given that all the information necessary to solve the puzzle was inside the cave, it couldn't hurt to solve it now even if I didn't have the background information to know why it was there. I was able to open the safe (really interesting puzzle, by the way,) but when I did so, Ardus said something about Udumo's journal which... I don't think I've actually investigated the context for yet. And my Quest Log now marks "Ask Glenton about Udumo" and a few subsequent objectives as completed, even though I never did so.

Also, while I was able to successfully complete the puzzle, so I think that I understand it, one of the hints in the dreamscape seems to me to be incorrect. The note with what's supposed to be a drawing of 1098 appears to actually depict 13,300 in base 5, or 1075. The way I figure, 1098 ought to look like this.

The sequence breaking was planned for! The way the quest system works, it awards you the other objectives even if you jump into the middle of that quest by exploring on your own. There is even slightly different dialog with Udumo et al. depending on if you found the journal first without talking to him or Glenton about it, so no worries. You are right to assume that the information to solve the puzzle is found in the Water Spine Cavern alone.

As for the picture you posted...I really wish I had more testers. You are correct in that the sample picture is missing the left branch. Crap. We'll chalk that one up to Udumo's forgetfulness.
Took me quite a while to get around to it, but I've played for about an hour and so far the game is stunning. The writing is the standout element I think, but there are fantastic things going on with the music, gameplay and the art. I'm detecting some broad influences (everything from literature to prog rock) which makes a serious difference.

Also, for the record, I couldn't believe some of what people were saying on Greenlight, since I think the art is pretty great.

I'm planning on expanding this into a full review later, but the only problems so far:

--Might have been a good idea to add an idle pose for Ardus when he's standing still, rather than the stepping pose.
--Also not sure the synopsis does the game justice. I think you might be able to expand on the interesting elements of the world while condensing the description of the game's background and using a more palatable description of the combat mechanics. (It really interested me, but the Greenlight comments in particular made me feel like the current one doesn't work... some people seem to be taking it as suggesting there's no actual battle system.)

Anyway, this game is pretty inspiring so far and I'm really hoping it gets more attention soon.
Hey guys, looks like I got stuck in the same place as Karkwa.

I'm near the end of the game (all quests finished but the main quest and Udumu, with the story opening up really nicely), but stuck getting the eye of Despair.

I'm assuming the eye of Despair shows up in the Udumu quest, but I just can't figure out the chest puzzle. Does anyone have any more substantial tips to give?

...Or, alternatively, I'd have no problem with the actual number for the combination, haha.

Edit--Finished thanks to a very kind PM from Desertopa, and the end was really great. I already find myself wanting to see more from the world, since I think you've got something really excellent going on here.
I'm having some trouble with the same thing most people seem to be. There's only about three loose ends that I'm aware of that I totally can't figure out, and one of them is the Eye of Despair, which I'm totally lost on.

I've finished every quest except, for some reason, finding all thirteen chests in the Plantation. Glancing at my completion score seems to suggest that there's one chest left on floor 1 that I seriously can't find, and I'm pretty sure I've scoured that place top to bottom. It's baffling me because nobody else seemed to be having trouble with that part. On a related note, does the prismatic claw have any use at all once you've got it?

Secondly, the map of Hornberg lists a Secret Library and three points labelled 1, 2, and 3. Those points don't seem to do anything or react in any way, though, and I haven't found any hint of how to mess with this library, if it's supposed to exist.

Finally... yeah, the other eye. Someone want to point me in the right direction? Because I'm totally lost, heh. If it's as hidden as the mask was (which I think I only found through pure luck and from spending hours looking for that last dang chest) I doubt I'll ever find it under my own power.

EDIT: Wouldn't you know it, I found the other eye. Entirely unrelated to any of those things. For future reference, if anyone else stumbles on this neat game and has trouble with it later...

It's in the water spine cavern. Go to the cavern, then to the mindscape version thereof. Go all the way to the end, in the room with the lantern and the test-chest, then to the bottom left corner. There's a secret tunnel leading to a chest with it.
i want to try this game out badly but good lord

how is this game 400mb? did you accidentally include an episode of friends in the exe package?
