A Demo About Painting and Story

This is a demo review.
This is a review for the file which is downloaded on April 24, 2017. My playtime: 03:59:47.

Before you start the demo, you might want to replace Map144.rvdata2 file in Data folder.

Intro
Canvas is an action puzzle game about a story revolving around a canvas. You can fight your enemies in real time and sometimes, you need the enemies to solve some puzzles.

Graphics
Most (if not all) of the graphics are using default graphics. The mapping looks decent and i love the variety in the dungeon.

Music
I love the music, especially the one played in the main menu. The game mostly has relaxing music in it.

Story
The game's story is quite unique because it comes off of a story from a mom to her kid. There's no way of knowing whether the story itself is true, but it'll be interesting if it is. I like how the kid points out something reasonable only to be countered by her mom's arguments by the next second.

The game
You can see the enemies. You can hit them on four dimensional squares. However, you walk very slowly and the game seems to be "laggy" which makes me too lazy to re-explore everything. Your reaction time will be very slow because a small tap on the arrow key will make your character face a certain position (which is also somehow not working when you want it; probably because i was in the rush when i did it). You can't sprint although there is an ability to jump- I jumped whenever i can because it's faster than walking normally. I find a hard time to turn around when i did that though and you can't jump all the time.

The enemies will drop an item on the ground (and you're supposed to reach the floor to pick it up). Most of the time, it'll contain some money although there's a chance that you can get some items from it (which i have no idea what to use for, probably crafting or something).

Speaking of crafting, you can craft. I never did the crafting though because i had a hard time to know how to mine (will be explained later). You can obtain some recipes which contains some powerful items.

Aside from crafting, there are a lot of minigames in the game. Some can be done in the main storyline although some is more like a side quest. You can fish, mine, or even... pickpocket people (because you play as thieves). There is even a rank in pickpocketing people. I haven't got the chance to max my level (mostly because i can't find another target to pickpocket) although i always want to try to pickpocket the mayor in the town. As for mining, the instruction is quite confusing that i'm having a hard time in understanding it. You need to think a little to complete it though.

Um.. what? Pickpocket?

The game also offers some puzzles. The dungeon mostly consists of several types of puzzles that you have to solve. While i think that it's interesting, some of them are hard enough that i have to resort to read a walkthrough for it (it's included with the game files). However, i love the puzzles in Ruins of Resolve very much. You'll have to think hard to solve the puzzles and it's not that hard to begin with (although it's not that easy either).

Speaking of puzzles, there are some items/skills that you can use to solve the puzzles. There is one skill that's only available for the specific party member although there are also some shared ones. However, even with all of those, i still can't figure out how to reach some items which seems to be impossible to reach.

Tell me. How can i get the chest?

There are four main dungeons in the demo, with each has their own bosses. The bosses are easy to kill because you have 2 people which equals to two health bar and the bosses only take a few hits to kill. I even can kill it without looking at my HP bar.

The dungeon itself has their own map which consists of which room we're in and the save point location. It's quite useful to keep track on your progress. However, once you finished the dungeon, you have to walk back to the entrance. I wish there is a portal or something which can warp you through one another, but that doesn't seem to be the case. There is a similar item which functions like that near the end of the demo though.

There is also some stealth like aspect in the game where you have to prevent some knight monster from looking at you. Sure, you can kill them, but you have to do it before they notice you- or even, just run after you kill them.

Lastly, the game crashes like around 3 times+ when i played it.

Pros:
- Tons of puzzles
- 2 playable characters
- Tons of minigames

Cons:
- Slow character
- Mine minigame instruction is confusing
- No portal to the beginning of a dungeon
- "Impossible to reach" items

Conclusion
This is a puzzle game which focused on puzzle and minigames.

Final rating: 2.5/5
Although this game is good, the slow walking character beats the game. You need to fix it asap.

--
Some bugs(?):
- Regrouping (using Breadcumbs) in the dark area will cause the map to turn dark.

I don't have a growth mindset...yet.

Thank you very much for the thorough review. I enjoyed reading it. If it helps to ease your curiosity, there are treasures throughout the demo that aren't attainable until you get other tools/gadgets. I put them there to entice players to come back for the full version (coming very soon), and I apologize if they frustrate some players.

The character is set to the default normal speed, and I know some players will consider it too slow, but I am reserving the ability to dash for later for puzzle solving purposes.

The only dungeon of the 4 that you would potentially have to walk back through is the third one. You can use the item you get after that boss to "teleport" right out though. The other 3 you exit right from the boss room.

There are two types of levers - one that stays flipped and one that flips back after some amount of time.

Hope this clears some of the issues up. Thank you again for taking the time to play Canvas and post a review!

ah, so that's why. well, i don't really mind to re-explore, as long as i can do it fast. but the slow movement speed and the "laggy" screen makes me have to take a long time just to do that.

i don't recall that there's that item. i must have missed that one.

thanks for the clarification for the both parts. i'll remove the lever thing from the bug list. :)
