September 6th, 2020:
Version 2.091
-changed positions of Dragons in final dungeon to spread them out and no longer required to manually skip the Dragons to continue on
-minor mapping and animation changes, and audio adjustments

Legends Of Illarion 2 is the long awaited prequel to the 2009 RM2K3 game Legends Of Illarion. The prequel takes place in ancient Illarion at the dawn of time, many centuries before the events of the first game. I consider this game mostly to be an old school JRPG.

You don't need to play LOI before playing LOI2. You can play either game before the other and there won't be too much spoilers involved. The first LOI contains a larger more diverse world with more interrelated story elements and characters, while LOI2 is a little easier, smaller, and more straight forward than the first game. I actually recommend you play this game first.

"We are but mortals who cannot fathom the true nature of the gods. Whether they are kind and benevolent, or vengeful and angry, I cannot say. The only thing that is certain, is that their power is real, and we must always be wary..."

The world of Illarion is at its infancy, having been created by the gods for only mere centuries. An Entity appears, born from the evil growing in the very hearts of mortals, bringing destruction and chaos to the realms. The gods await worthy heroes to appear and defeat the Entity. However, as time passes by, none step forth to save Illarion.

In desperation, one goddess intervenes in mortal affairs, using deception to cause a group of mortals to begin a journey to defeat the Entity. But do they truly fight to save Illarion, or do they fight to fulfill their own selfish motives? As they squabble amongst themselves and get ever closer to the promised end of their journey, the gods play their cruel hand and begin to reveal their true intentions...

Hey, glad to hear that you've picked this back up again. Thanks for playing! I'm curious though, are you still playing the same version from when you stopped a few months ago?

Yeah, you really should, but because your version is so old, it would be best if you send me a copy of your save file first so that I can check/fix it for compatibility.

Otherwise, if you want to just try it yourself, I think it'll still work, but you need to reset everyone's SP first before copying your save over.

The biggest difference gameplaywise, is that magic users can use all their skills now, no matter which weapon they equip.

Just to let you know though, I'm about to release a "MP3" soundtrack version by like, tomorrow.
Ok, I finished it over the weekend, its long! I didn't upgrade.

The end game was quite easy (but fairly balanced) when I had my party strategy decisively defined. This is in huge contrast to what I said in the early game, where you have very little wiggle room against that chimera which makes it very hard. Speaking of wiggling, this game is filled with gimmick bosses that require very specific strategies with little flexibility. I'm thinking in particular of the hydra in the forest. He does this tsunami that deals 99999 to everyone which is clearly unavoidable. Apparently only 2 skills in the entire game would work on him. How you know this without a strategy guide (beyond those 2 characters vaguely mentioning it) is beyond me. You'd have to fiddle in the menu resetting SP several times to find where these skills are. I'd probably give up by then because at that point I forgot or didnt know that you need to learn all the skills in one tier to unlock the next tier of spells. This is also kinda annoying because some skills are pretty useless but you must expend SP to learn them anyway.

Another thing. If you have a habit of keeping current party members over new ones, abandon that idea. In this game later characters are massively OP compared to early characters. In fact some bosses WILL require them to be used. Also the fact that you get a level 40 old guy while everyone else is in their 30's. Probably means I'm underleveled, but I got this far so no need to grind. Besides, some characters sport some of the most OP spells in the game. Like with all long RPG's I'll share my strats here too.

My strats
Massive turtling. 3 healers and 2 fighters. The fighters are the elf (who has 2 very useful free passives) and the old guy (hits hard). Replaced old guy with blue hair who is even more ridiculous, doing 3-4k+ easy with TP skills. Blue also has status steal which is obviously OP since the 4 entities love to use buffs. The 3 healers are synergistic with each other and are impossible to defeat unless all of them die at the same time. One revives everyone else at 100% (srsly, how OP is that), one can revive only 1 at a time but has a strong single target heal that also gives HP and MP regen (best spell in the game IMO), and the other healer has AOE group heal and damage reduction shield, both of which are massively useful. With these wonder healers it was pretty much impossible to loose unless I didn't get the correct passives, because if the boss cant kill them all at once, they all come back the next turn. Massive LOL's.

I never used the crafting, it looked simple but craft materials looked like they were mostly limited.

Hey bicfarmer, thanks for playing all the way through and finishing the game! I've changed the skill system in the newest versions so that you no longer have to learn all skills to unlock the ones that you want to use. Yeah, it sounds like you were under leveled, so the newer characters seemed way better. But yeah, it general I did want to make the later characters seem more appealing to use. Anyways, thanks for the feedback!
i can't seem to find the key in the potted plant in deserted castle. i inspected all of the potted plant in the eastern garden but it's all says nothing. did i miss something?

EDIT: nevermind. i'm actually missing the key from the art gallery.

I'm quite enjoying this game, much more than I thought I would. I'm about three hours in now and I'm definitely going to continue.

The dialogue can be very unnatural and direct at times, which I generally dislike however it does mean the games pace is incredibly fast, and that's probably it's greatest strength. There's plenty of character customisation, and exploration is rewarded well. Game play wise, it's enjoyable and there's enough content to sink your teeth into.

Still, I wish I liked the story and characters a little more, there's glimpses of personality but I almost feel like you're not bothered whether we like the characters or not sometimes. I also wish towns where a little more fleshed out, you can't go into any buildings apart from shops which is a minor shame.

Hey LWG thanks for playing and for the feedback!

Yeah, the dialogue can sound a bit stiff at times, especially with the first few characters being generally more serious. At first, I was kind of supposed go with a more high fantasy/formal type of speech, but the game ended up more JRPG in every other aspect, so the dialogue sort of ended up somewhere in between, in a bit of no man's land.

As for their personalities, well... it's a complex issue but... let's just say I wouldn't be surprised if you don't sympathize with some actions of the main chars =)

Or if you just mean that their personality isn't fleshed out enough, then yeah it would've been more ideal if I could've spend a little more time with that too. I will say though that some more of their personalities can be seen through some flavor texts in talking with some NPCs.

I think it could be a combination of both honestly. As I said, the game has a really good flow to it, you're never in one area for too long and you're never stuck in some overly long cutscene - both good things!

I just think some of the character motivations, possible conflicts and interesting dynamic between personalities are sacrificed in that process. I was expecting that Moshran and Petranor were going to become rivals/enemies because when you look at their base ideals they shouldn't get along - it was really hard to see why they were friends in the first place. For all I know, maybe that does happen, as I'm only about 5 hours in now I think. At the moment everyone is sort of skipping along happily hoping for immortality (which if you've played a game like Lost Odyssey is actually a really scary and sad lifestyle).

I have spoken to a few NPCs, but after I realised NPCs with quests have an arrow on there head AND you can't go inside buildings I think my interest of exploring towns sort of vanished. Anyway, please don't take any of this to heart - as someone who briefly played the original Legends of Illarion, you have improved leaps and bounds and you should be proud of yourself for making and finishing this game.

Oh no worries, it's good to hear some of your thoughts and analysis. Some of the personalities and dynamics between characters can be a bit subtle at times, maybe too subtle...

By the way, how are you finding the difficulty level? If it seems too low, I actually just updated the download to a newer version 2.078 where it's tweaked up a little. Your current saves are fully compatible and can be copied over. It sounds like you're playing at a fast pace so I dunno if maybe it's not an issue for you, but lately I've been watching some players who are "fight everything / do everything" type of players, who got really strong, so the fights seemed to end up being a bit too easy for them.

I think the best way to answer your question is to say that it's not hard. It's certainly not too easy, but it has sort of a fake difficulty in that enemies (especially bosses) have a lot of HP. I haven't yet encountered a game over, and I've only used a handful of revival items. It's a pleasurable kind of difficulty, but I wouldn't mind it scaled up a little.

I do think Mages that have spells that damage all foes outweigh any other physical based character though. You also don't really mix up the troops very well, as in battles will only have one enemy copy pasted three times so there isn't much choice on who you focus on.

Out of curiosity, did you use Elara's Elemental Exchange or Sirani's Water Weaponry buffs for some of the fire based boss fights? Or Elara's skills that consume a Mana Potion, or Adron throwing Yellow Potions (he gets damage bonus)? It does make a big difference in damage output with all of that.

That is true about mage AOE spells being a bit too strong. I have been occasionally considering about mixing up the monster groupings too. I think I just might go and do that now...

EDIT: Done! I've reshuffled different types of enemies into various groups in the newest version.
Hi Dylck, I surrended I can not beat the hydra, my team is at Level 41, the 1rst turn, I used MalachinĀ“s spell supposed to drain the mp, then Moshram spell to down hydras INT, Aldron to level up the ESS for all the party, and 1st time for hydra, its dray a part of the party mp, 2nd turn parry all my party and hydra kill them all with liquidification 99999 who is going to survive to that hit?. which level must I supposed to have?, I am frustrated I also tried changing party members (keeping Moshram and Malachin) without luck helpppppp please
Dyluck
For thousands of years, I laid dormant. Who has disturbed my slumber?

You need to lower the Hydra's Mp on the turns after he drinks a mana potion. You can do this with Malachins sword skill or Oldras decay spell. He drinks mana potion every 4 turns so you might have to repeat those attacks.

Edit: Just to clarify, Malachin's sword skill is the one that lowers MAX MP, called Minimize Magic
Hi Dyluck that is what I did, the 1rst turn, I used MalachinĀ“s spell Mage Macher but it does no take to much MP from hydra (when is the 1st turn of hydra he takes the same amount of mana from Malachin ) now going to try instead of use Resolute Ruth wit Odra I am going to use Decay I will let you know if it function now. Thanks in advance
Dyluck
For thousands of years, I laid dormant. Who has disturbed my slumber?
5184
Mage Masher is the wrong skill. It doesn't lower enemy MP.

You need to use Malachin's MINIMIZE MAGIC on turn #2, NOT turn #1, because that is after the Hydra drinks the Mana Potion at the end of turn #1.
Great yesssssssssssssssss I killed it, I change the maze to Malachim for the sword, and use decay OMG today I a going to sleep happy whahahaha. Thankssssssssssss
