Return of the Last Era

So I have been informed via Discord summoning that people still know I exist. Great!

Let's get to the interesting parts; A lot's happened. Well, sort of. Personally no, I'm just chugging along with life; no major changes there! I'm in a good place, so my disappearance was just happenstance, and not dramatic nor intentional.

As far as The Last Era, well, a good bit has actually changed. On a large note, nothing about the project's direction in a meta sense has really changed; the description you can read about it on the main page is still current, and so are the characters, general premise, and atmosphere.

So what's changed? Firstly, the graphical production has changed gears in a big way; as you last remember, I was working on graphical assets with the help of JosephSeraph. He's a wonderful artist and even a better person, but unfortunately he had other projects to commit to. Which is fine of course. Jo, if you're reading this, I love you man!

But this left me in a bind; now what do I do? Well, I could use the work he already did as a base, so over the course of a few months (and even now) I practiced my pixel art skills, fundamentals, and aimed to see if I could fill in the gaps where he left off. I've been editing on and off for years already, so I'm managing to catch on quickly. See if any of you can catch any of my anonymous submissions to Pixel Dailies on Twitter!

But then came the matter of Engine. You guys may already know that I moved on from RPG Maker to GameMaker. I messed around with it but a little bit, but on a whim I found out that Unity is what I want The Last Era to shine on. Not only is C# a widely used language unlike GML which is GameMaker specific (meaning I can learn C# on its own for any other reason and it can carry on to Unity, and vice versa. Looks good on a resume!), but it's just more powerful.

Not that I need Unity to make a sprite based game that this project is on. GameMaker would work, and the Last Era still isn't bigger or especially more ambitious than it ever was.

But unlike GML, C# is infinitely easier for me to learn (trust me, I put in the time in both), and unlike RPG Maker, unity is powerful, I mean god damn, and I can do exactly what I want to do. You can make even simple shit look, feel, and play good and undeniably unique and exactly what you want it to be.

So yeah, that's where we're at; I still actively work on the Last Era and no its not dead. I'd be lying if I made some blood oath to finish it in classic RMN fashion, but it is what I've wanted to do and make for like, ever.

Right now, I'm putting together all the bits and pieces, but soon, I'll have something to show for it. Thanks for reading!

NOTHING IS FINAL. In the meantime, enjoy this HD portrait and message box!

I couldn't think of a witty blog title except that one.

WIP of our text boxes and portraits, courtesy of JosephSeraph of course! Stay tuned, more's to come!

Going all custom with the graphics was one of the best decisions to make with Chronology. Here's some progress.

We're in the 'a lot of things going on behind the scenes progress but still progress' part, but here's some progress. Thanks and credit to JosephSeraph!

Been a while. Here's a taste of what's cooking.

Very WIP, but take a look, graphical mock courtesy of JosephSeraph showcasing what's possible in GM. More to come.

BIG BIG changes coming soon! In the meantime, here's a slime.

Some pretty big changes and news coming with Chronology soon. Stay tuned.

The new Callox is looking quite handsome!

Old Callox

New Callox

I think he looks very dashing! There's a few tweaks I have to do in regards of translating his sprite perfectly to RM Ace, but for the most part it's as intended.

While I've always had a love affair with the FFVI styled sprites, and that old RM face was handy, a move in a totally original direction will do wonders for not only the characters, but the game as a whole. Now, instead of approximating what Callox and the others look like and their visual appearance based on other works, I can totally inject my own direction! Callox's complete set of battle poses is done as well, but those will make their special debut in a future update.

While it's not a giant step in production in terms of raw workload, it is a pretty big step, and a very important symbolic one. But stay tuned, future updates will be even bigger.

Thanks to JosephSeraph for the fantastic work, of course!

Getting To The Next Level: Is Patreon a good idea to consider moving forward?

Well, Chronology has been going on for a while, but recently as you guys may have followed, I decided to take it to a more polished level by phasing out borrowed/ripped assets in favor for custom ones, carefully curated to meet the aesthetic, spirit, and style of RPG that I want Chronology to be. The most notable examples of this would be the facesets and battle characters you've seen so far, courtesy of JosephSeraph

The eventual goal with this is to turn Chronology of the Last Era into a polished, quality RPG on the RM Ace engine that's good enough where I can hopefully put it on Steam for everyone to enjoy and maybe even turn a profit. As someone who has created this great beast of mine for fun with no real aspirations in game creation, that idea excites me fantastically.

However, it also costs money.

I am able to afford the great talent that Chronology has been blessed to have so far. But as development goes on, things will cost more and more money, because well, some things you gotta pay for if you want quality. I can be creative, cut costs, and even learn a few skills myself to save a few $$$, but there's no real way around spending money on Chronology. I don't mind doing this, but if I were able to find a way to help fund Chronology, that would free up my pockets, accelerate development (considerably), and ultimately result in a better product.

The question is, is this viable? A good idea? Is Patreon something that would work with Chronology and what it wants to be?

Face Your Fate

Just a 'minor' update (but anything new from JosephSeraph is anything but minor to me), just wanted to show off some new facesets, courtesy of JosephSeraph, and to let you know that I'm still alive. Taking this game to 'the next level' in terms of original graphics/assets and potentially a commercial endeavour can be slow and arduous at times, but it's still going!

Once the battle/field map sprites are hot off the presses (coming soon!), and I get the new direction for tiles down, we'll really be cooking. Until then, here's some faces! These are major NPCs (the main party members are more or less done), just some of the important figures that you'll meet in your journey.

Oh, of course, be sure to show the creator of all of this art for Chronology, JosephSeraph some love!

Paramount Hilde Langner

Democratically elected leader of the Rosevelt Alliance, Hilde is a skilled politician, attaining her position in the midst of the last Great War against the Empire, and thus quickly had to learn (and learned) the difficulties of balancing the interests of each member state of the Alliance into a cohesive nation.

Julian Ames Foucalt

One of the four Kingpins of the Consortium criminal organization. Compared to some of the other Kingpins, like the overly violent Crassius and the chillingly brutal Red Queen, Foucalt prefers to advance his organizations interests via his charismatic personality and ability to move goods and money.

Aurelius

Talented mage and tactician, and acts as a mysterious go between for a powerful, equally mysterious political force. Devoted to the cause, and is pragmatic with a cruel streak.

Commander Luiz Bullock

Determined, serious veteran of the Great War, and leader of the Arondight Mercenaries that lends a helping hand to Callox. Competent fighter, strategist, and leader, and mentor of his troops.

Hope you enjoy! Next up hopefully is a major update! Stay tuned!

Element Properties in Enemy Attack Skill Names?

So lately I've been thinking about some random battle stuff, and recently I was wondering if it would be a good idea.

So you know how in RPGs the game displays the name of the enemy attack in some fashion, like so;

I've noticed that a lot of games, not all of them, but a lot of them neglect to tell you the properties of enemy attacks in battle. I think this is not very intuitive, for a number of reasons;

1. Almost all RPGs have preparation in the form of protection against some property as part of the strategy. If you don't know the properties you're dealing with, how can you effectively strategize?

2. Not all enemies have obvious properties that the player can guess such as Ice Dragons or Fire Djinns and whatnot; a lot of enemies seem ambigious in terms of properties, like a magic knight or some kind of oddball looking enemy. Ditto this sentiment for unusual looking or named attacks

In many games, they supply a Bestiary helps out immensely if that resource lists out an enemies attacks, with the elemental properties attached. But the problem with that is that it doesn't help in the midst of battle when you're deciding what elemental shield to through up, whether to beef up your magical or physical defense.

So I'm thinking of putting up icons on the enemy attack names to signify enemy attacks as physical or magical, and the element, if applicable. I'll have to mess around with making it hang around longer on the screen, amongst other fixes, but you guys think it's a good idea?
