Hey guys: So...how do I Tumblr? (and other stuff)

Game developers ahead of the curve know that when it comes to getting your game out there, known, and for people to follow and eventually play it, social media is where its at. I'm big into effective marketing of cool stuff, so my game already has a Twitter and a Tumblr.

I feel pretty confident in my Twitter foothold so far, but how do I Tumblr? Many game developers are doing very well on Tumblr, but I'm finding it hard to get a foothold on my numbers in terms of interaction and activity. To those who are deep in the Tumblrsphere, do you guys have any advice?

General advice for all social media outreach is appreciated as well!

The thing to know is that Twitter and Tumblr is that they're very different environments. I've been promoting my games on both sites and it seems like Twitter has been an easier venture when it comes to straight-forward RPGs made in RPG Maker. It seems to me like many twitter users are a bit older and find classic RPGs more appealing.

My success on tumblr has been very limited, as the userbase is generally much younger and the RPG Maker community there heavily favors RM Horror over other genres, thanks to the Yume Nikki/IB boom. The scope there is definitely more focused and it's a much tougher nut to crack.
You may have to learn how to reddit to master thimb blur. There are rpgmaker and indie dev subreddits... I would upload some kinetically interesting game gifs and images to tumblr with some written info interspersed, kinda like your blogs here. Then link those to the aftermentioned reddits... and BAM!! The people who follow those subreddits are now keeping up with your tumblr updates. I think there are jrpg and chrono trigger subreddits who'd eat this game up too. basically the secret to getting a tumblr following is to link to the post on other social media sites.
I was going to ask about this xD!. Because I just recently opened a Tumblr, and numbers are so stale that the zero-notes was making me to ditch that sheetpickle and never return again (cause you know, it's time you could spend in gam mak! ;_;).

Anyway, I'll take note of everything. Me want success thing (?).

(Also Feld, you spam me, I spam you, we cover our backs ;D).

EDIT: Just realized the words Twitter and Tumblr at the blog post were links! "orz

it would help to establish yourself before pawning your game off on people, mog/orochii. i got a few hundred tumblr followers and some wide-spread posts just by posting screenshots of memorable moments in shows, anime, and games. i eventually left, though, for something that you should be warned of: the complete lack of moderation that Tumblr has. have you ever received a bunch of hate mail, being called a racist, for not agreeing with a fictional alien race in mass effect? because i have. have you ever received a bunch of hate mail for posting screenshots of a niche anime that was a few weeks old, because a few people had already watched those episodes and didn't want to see them again? yeah. tumblr can go fuck itself. tumblr and imgur are probably the worst public places i know of on the internet, simply due to a lack of moderation.

so good luck

Is the necessity of this specific to Tumblr, though? My Chronology Twitter account has quite a few (almost 100, and growing) followers just from people interested in my game, with no establishment beforehand. Also, I know quite a few Tumblr accounts with indie games, RPG Maker games included, that are just dedicated Tumblr accounts for that game in particular.

As a consumer on the other end of the equation, while shout outs to stuff someone is working on in the side is fine, I'd rather just follow a game specific page for that thing, than for a page I like to suddenly switch it up from 'cool stuff they talk about' to the product they're trying to market.
I re-opened Tumblr and started pumping my Twitter and Facebook page to get some attention before my next game demo release, so I've been focusing on uploading content about it. I sometimes reblog ""funny things"" (you know the Machamp called HomoMatsuri?), but I try to limit what I reblog instead of reblogging all I like, cause if not all my things will get buried under all the stuff. Or so I think.

I think kind of like Feld in that aspect, mostly I'm not very inclined to deviate my Twitter/Tumblr from its purpose, but I know that if no one reblogs, no one will.

We know how defensive are people when it is about anime, or COD. Or Mass Erect.

twitter seems easier to spread simply because the site wants you to go see so much stuff. the sidebars and the top of the screen and basically the whole design of twitter is GO LOOK AT WHAT YOUR FRIENDS ARE LOOKING AT AND ALSO HERE ARE SOME RELATED THINGS TO WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING AT etc. it's easy to connect anybody on twitter with very few degrees of separation.

tumblr is extremely insular, with reblogs being the primary way to see other people's stuff, if you're following the person who is reblogging that other person. idk, it just doesn't seem terribly viable to me even though there are some people who use it well.
