Not the best of news...

Okay, so I'll lay it straight out for everyone: We probably won't make the deadline of 31st this year.

Why? Frankly, because I've received only two houses so far and while I don't mind making lots of the filler content to boost up the map count/adventure, the fact that this is supposed to be a collaborative effort begs for more collaboration.

Now, I'm not blaming anyone. Part of it is my own fault for not pimping the game enough and getting more people involved. We have a very large event running at the moment and most people are doing that instead - thus we've a lot less people doing maps than in previous years.

It's understandable - a lot of people are building their own projects and are focussing on getting them done before the deadline. I've recieved a few PMs asking for a bit more time and that's fine: I don't mind giving it. Of course, this means that the deadline is also set back a bit more.

Thus, I have this news and an idea: We probably won't make the deadline. That's currently a given, especially if we want a game to be proud of and not a quick mish-mash of maps and stories.

Hence, I think we should push for a mid-November map deadline. I say mid-November, because my life is going to get a little complicated at the start of the month, dealing with some medical issues and I might not have much time for RMing (which is one of the reasons I really wanted to finish it before the 1st).

This gives everyone more time, I'll try to pimp up the project in the mean-time so that we get some more mappers and by the time I get back there should be enough maps to make something glorious.

I hope you guys don't mind too much. I know that this means we don't get the participation MS/badge for the Halloween event, but again, I'll ask about getting everyone something as compensation (your own special badges and maybe a little MS).

So, that's where we currently stand. Any questions? Suggestions? Thoughts?

I dunno, maybe improving the communication between all of us (or at least between us mappers and you the lead developer) would help things run more smoothly. If you knew what we're planning to do with our maps before we sent them to you, it would be easier for you to come up with an overarching, cohesive story to link all maps together... It could even make eventing easier if after that you gave us instructions like: "there needs to be a key in your map" or "you need to reference this other event/person" etc.

As for how am I doing, I have the map and the story, but I'm not sure how I'm going to make it all "scary". I'd like to make poses and lighting effects, etc. but time is short. Plus I still have one scene left to draw... If this were a matter of just plug-and-play I could make it before the deadline, but to make a game "to be proud of" I'm not sure if you guys can count with me. x_X
To tell the truth, the main story is usually inspired by the maps you guys throw into the mix. I have an idea or two set up as an overlay, but the maps created give a better feel and flow to the story altogether. I find links between them and expand on them - like with Thanoy and Wetts.
For example, I knew with WETTS that it would be set in a forest. I knew Emi was looking for her father, but I left everything else dependant on the maps - the feel of the forest, the exploration and direction of everything was inspired by what you guys put in.
It's the same with THaNoY. I had a general idea - Emi in a haunted mansion looking for something - and all your maps filled in the gaps and helped to create the layout of the mansion. I had no idea of what rooms would be where in the mansion until I got the maps and fit them all together.
I like that, creating order from chaos, sewing different stories into a larger one, but with small ones still within. I'll edit some parts to make them fit - like add an item here and there to promote exploration, but leave the main parts alone so that people can do as they will.

But you are right about communication. I would love to hear from anyone about what they're doing or if they need help with ideas and such. And don't worry about scary if you don't think you can do it. Maybe focus on mystery instead - there were two key-words~ ^.^

And no-one dare think their maps aren't good enough! I'm here to help, but I trust that you all can map well enough to create a house. And we can talk it out if you need be, too.

Anyway, if anyone wants to discuss their doings, PM me any time. I'll get back to you ASAP. I like surprises so I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's maps!

I hope those "issues" are not too serious (worries) and can be taken care of with the appropriate professional help ... With that in mind, I don't think anybody will mind that this doesn't get done in time and should gladly accept the new deadline.

I think this is a really good idea; we're down, but not out. Frankly with all the chaos going on right now- water in the basement & a last-minute move to my parents' house for 3 weeks- it was getting stressful. This way we can continue more clay (Though November get busy at work..) However, I was wondering what exactly when know about Emi and her father.; might there be room for relatives in Hearthfoam or would this be a problem? Also for those interested in the Goddess angle I'll gladly share, though I think I've started to go in a new direction with mine; a direction of true horror.
Quite simply, during antebellum times, Heartfoam's main industry wasn't fishing; it was slavery. The wharf (for it is a seaside town) saw many slave ships come and go and many people, including the mayor's ancestors, had slaves of their own. Such a past left its mark on the town...
(My own sub-plot involves a "Romeo-and Juliet" type love between members of two different social classes.)

Now I'm wondering if I might be able to make another submission to this, thanks to the extended deadline? Gears are turning!
Yeah the extension definitely gives me more relief and less panicking. The creative juices are flowing better at least ;w;
@edchuy: They're more medical than anything. It's not a huge deal but there's going to be a lot of travelling involved, so I won't be home as much. ^.^; It's actually a good thing, all up. :D

@BT: Ah, I like the ideas that you've put forth but the one thing I keep control of is Emi and her family... there are reasons for this, one of them being that you guys should have surprises in store too~ I will say that I have plans for her family and in the hidden area I'll post some info about her/them.

First let me point out that Emi will be aging through the series, though it will probably be subtle to start with.
She was born with a very powerful ability to see the world beyond ours - that of the dead - and she has been able to interact with those beings ever since she was small.
Her mother died not long after giving birth to her, so it is her father who has raised her and her older brother. Said father is a well-known Exorcist, though his power is just enough to help spirits pass on. He's not strong enough to remove them from their ties to the world, but Emi's ability can, so she is often sent into the spirit realm first to interact with the spirits. By doing so her latent abilities pull them away from the ties that bind them, especially when she finds the truth behind their deaths or helps them resolve an issue that plagued them after dying.
Her older brother, Michel, is currently travelling, though he has not been in touch for a few years. He is not gifted with any spiritual power, which is why he left - because he felt he needed to distance himself from the family that he doesn't fit in. She's not worried about him, though, as she and her father travel extensively, so not hearing from him is the norm. (The letters take time to catch up to them and it's hard to call when neither have cell phones - which are relatively new to the gross market.)

Hope that gives you a bit of insight. She has no uncles or aunts on her fathers side, and one aunt on her mother's. Unfortunately, her mothers' family blames her father for her mothers' death, so they don't meet often. They also disagree with his travelling the country with her and using her in his work, but such is Emi's latent power that it doesn't matter where she goes - she connects and slips into the spirit world by accident from time to time.
That said, the spirit world is (almost) completely safe for mortal beings as only spirits are effected and trapped there. There are a few times when there's danger - say when a vengeful spirit uses the power of an innocent to try to resurrect the anti-Christ or when a unicorn traps souls in it's forest - but nothing can physically hurt her (mentally, emotionally and entrapment are a whole other ball game, though).

@Marrend: Go for it~ If you've the time and ideas are flowing I'm happy to see more entries. Double-ups are allowed. ^.^

@Nessy~: :D I look forward to the suffering you'll put your household through~ >:D

That would be a good way of turning lemons into lemonade ...

I'm glad that's nothing major then. A lot of travelling, you don't mean travelling abroad to some place, I don't know, like the South Pole ...

The reason I asked about family was that when I bounced my ideas off others someone suggested the two might be visiting Aunt Martha or something. Either way, Fiona, the woman who lives in my house, will probably dote on her; she'll also give her some insight into the past. By forcing the townspeople to confront and accept the past they've tried to hide, Emi can heal their spirits.
After all, not all ghosts are literal.

BTW, I've collected a few tunes from the Charas project I think might be of use; shall i share them as packet for others to peruse? Elements in common would help connect things. I thought this one by Benosalnkelly might be good for the title screen... http://rpgmaker.net/media/content/users/8106/locker/Dreams_and_Stars_benosalankelley.mid
Sorry about those aforementioned medical issues,Lib. I'm not going to pry about the details but I wish you good health and a swift recovery!
I might make another map now if I figure out the other tilesets! That's not likely though, I'm pretty content with what I got done.

Good luck to Libby with that medical stuff! I wish you the best~
