It's the day before Halloween, and little Roberta is excited for her first ever Halloween party at school. She simply can't wait to get home and have her mother help her make a costume. However, an unfortunate event halts her plans, sending her on a journey in a world she never once imaged existed. She joins Dee and Eddy on their journey to save the world from a malevolent force known as Teenage Rebellion.

An All Hallows' Event 2013 entry for the themes Ghost Stories and Halloween Comedy.

This game takes place in the same world as Halloween Flop, but you do not need to play that game first to understand this one.

Balanced Version Posted

So four days later, here is what the contest entry was supposed to be. I've run through the game dozens of times now, and I'm fairly happy with the balancing of the battles and I think I've finally quashed every strange bug that would randomly appear.

There are a couple minor things I'd like to fix eventually, but nothing worth delaying the release. (In case you're curious, I want to play with the battle transition so that it is actually visible on the mostly black maps and trim the opening dialogue...somehow.)

I touched on this in a comment in the previous blog, but here are some of the changes you can expect:
-A battle log which is visible by pressing a "cancel" button when selecting moves. This log also states what newly inflicted states do.
-The ability to "quit" a battle with a single press of the F9 key. No longer will you be stuck in a losing battle just waiting for the rest of your party to die.
-A preview of what skills can be learnt in the menu. This makes the choice of who to use the training manual on a little less blind.
-In the contest version, stat upgrades were just randomly handed out for beating the three "boss" monsters. Now you find a total of 15 by exploring the maps! There's one in most rooms.
-Changed Roberta's last skill to something a bit more useful.
-Battles that have days spent on them instead of a couple hours! What a concept! I'd say about a quarter of the skills in the contest version didn't even do what they were supposed to! Battles are generally more difficult now. Because I did not have the time to properly balance them, I had erred on the side of mind-numbingly easy because I'd rather the player be bored with them than frustrated.
-Replaced some of the old music that was thrown in temporarily just for the sake of not having silent battles.
-Some more animation and artwork to the first and final cutscenes.

Enough talk! Go download it if you were holding out before. We didn't get anyone besides ourselves to test it, so let us know if you find any issues that need to be addressed.

It’s funny how as soon as I review the first one then a second one “magically” pops out of nowhere. (Seriously, it was like the gamepage just got submitted as soon as I was posting the review up!)

Since I enjoyed playing Halloween Flop the other day, I’ll probably wait until you release the full version after testing everything to make sure that everything works just fine before playing it. Kudos on managing to get this released (sort of) before the deadline. ^^
I actually originally missed your review because of the flood of notices from the last day of the event and the rush to (sort of) finish this on time. We really didn't want to fail the same contest two years in a row. :x

It's probably too late to incorporate some of your suggestions from the HF review, but I am going to at least add a battle log so you can catch what you miss. It has always bugged me how fast the messages disappear, but at the same time, I don't want to waste the player's time too much.

Hey, it’s okay, I knew that you guys were pretty busy with the contest and stuff.

And thanks for adding the battle log and listening to some of my half-asked crazy suggestions; I know that you can only do what you can do at this point.

- Still looking forward to the full release! :)
(Don't disappoint me.)
I managed to get through all the basic "AI" stuff and tested about a third of the battles at work today. I don't think we'll have it finished up for today like I was hoping, but I think I'll have the large majority of tomorrow to work on it.
holy shit, how did I miss this? I am all about this entire graphical style, and it looks super well executed. if this wasn't listed, I'd have trouble telling it was made in rpg maker.

which sounds like faint praise, but really it's not! honest! shaking the whole default rpg maker tone and style of presentation is super difficult but has a huge payoff, and at least as far as first impressions go it seems like you've managed it quite nicely.

ugh it's like two in the morning but YES WILL PLAY THIS etc.
Does this game run without RTP? I'm guessing not, since it's a 4.9MB download. :(
In fact, it's just that efficient a download. It would be silly to use RTP when the game is 98% custom art. The fact that the entire thing only uses 6 colours and midis is a large reason for that. It would actually be under a meg if not for the stupid font you have to include with all Ace games.
Good to know! Will play it, and probably review it soon!
Excellent game! So much fun!

I have nothing but good thoughts about Halloween Flop, so playing this addition to the universe was a no-brainer. I wasn't at all disappointed, even though I typically don't like prequels.

I'm not going to gush about it just yet. I don't want to lose steam. Hopefully I'll be able to pop up a review with all of my <3's and lulz.

Great work, everyone!
This game deserves a bit of a Halloween bump! If you're in the mood for a holiday game today, play this one!
This is one of my favorite games, for the record. Flop too! I want like whole series-es of games about these characters. Just replaying, so I thought I'd comment.
Thanks! We're both still very proud of these two games, so it's great to hear that!
