STORY SUMMARY:

Soul Sunder is the story of Zero, a young woman whose life was shattered when she unintentionally sets in motion events in her childhood that left her village destroyed, her brother dead, and her best friend crippled for life. Nine years later, Zero receives a letter from an unknown sender calling her to the depths of Purgatory, a mysterious dungeon that had risen from the ground. Many adventurers enter it's depths, but few return. It is in this place, the letter claimed, she could confront the truth of what happened in her past. Guide Zero as she forges into the nightmarish halls of Purgatory and tries to come to terms with the past she once tried to leave behind.

Soul Sunder is a dungeon crawling RPG with a unique twist: An emphasis on survival rather than grinding. While you can fight enemies to gain experience and level up, the focus of the game is using a combination of items you find in the dungeon and different equipment loadouts to navigate through Purgatory. Health items are limited, enemies are brutal, and there is no one coming to help you. Will you uncover the truth? Or will Purgatory claim you and your companions?

Features:

- A powerful, character-driven plot.
- Survival horror-like setting.
- Decide your approach to combat by choosing from an array of skill-granting weapons and items.
- 3 difficulty modes to suit your playstyle.
- Very challenging, survival-based gameplay.
- High replay value to try out different combinations of items and equipment.
- 2 different endings NOT based on static choices.
- A simple crafting system.
- Around 5-8 hours of gameplay.

Heaven or Hell

The downloads have been updated to version 2.0 in response to feedback from the last couple of reviews. I'm really sorry it took so long to do so!

So what's new in this version? Well, the biggest addition is a new difficulty setting: Heaven or Hell Mode. This is essentially Survivor mode but with a twist:

No item shop in Haven.

Yep, your only means of survival will come from what you can find in the ground. No loading up with healing items now. You still have the Blacksmiths, so spend your money on armor instead.

Heaven or Hell mode makes your actions in the Childhood Arc a bit more meaningful. By completing optional objectives and finding secrets, you're granted a few goodies to make the Adult Arc a bit easier to get into. This version adds a small, but hopefully appreciated new one: if you can find the secret candy stash in Orias, you're given a First Aid Kit upon starting the Adult Arc. And since each First Aid Kit can be used three times, that should make the lack of an Apothecary a bit easier to get over.

Anyway, Heaven or Hell Mode is for those that have already beaten the game once and want a real challenge. It's tough, but it can be done. I want to do something cool for anyone who beats that mode, but my mind's drawing a blank. If you want, I can make a page for a list of names of anyone who wants to be immortalized for completing the game in this mode!

Outside of Heaven or Hell, there have been a few changes as well. You'll see the nitty-gritty ones by checking the Version Changes document in the game's folder, but they're mostly balance fixes. To prevent you from drowning in healing items, the prices of all restorative items in the Apothecary have jumped up a decent amount. Which means, if you want to load up on healing items, you'll probably have to sell a few more attack items or equipment. Hope you're cool with that! Hee hee hee. But, as this would be incredibly unfair to those just starting out, the Apothecary will give you a discount while you're in Haven for the first time equal to the original price of those items. The idea of the game was to be hard, but fair, and unreasonable prices before you even have a chance to buy anything just isn't fair.

Since I didn't mess with the properties of the items themselves or add/remove new ones, anyone who wants to continue their save file should be able to just transfer them over. Word of advice: Rotate your save files.

... I'm making this sound really evil. And while it's true that every once in a while I have a glass of Saint's Blood with my dinner, this update was more to address some game-breaking issues than the result of a sudden sadistic streak as well as provide a challenge for those that found the game too easy the first time. I ran through the game on Heaven or Hell mode, and I saw a LOT of things I would have done differently if I could go back and do it all again. If I wasn't already fully submerged into Prayer of the Faithless, I might have actually remade the whole thing from the ground up.

Run when you need to, don't forget to check enemy properties before using an item, and don't forget to guard when enemies charge up. If you need help, check the hints and tips tab on the game page or ask a question here and I'll help you. You'll be fine. I believe in you!

So here you go. A more sadistic, evil version of Soul Sunder.

Looks promising, you could work on the game cover, it's a bit monochrome. I would recommend shortening your description to include just what you think is cool about the plot. I'd rather read plot description to catch my interest then learn how the game is played when I'm playing it. If you'd like me to test you game or write a review and offer my opinion, please send me a message!

I really appreciate the feedback. As for the title screen, I am such a noob when it comes to GIMP that I wasn't trying to bite off more than I could chew. I went with a more simplistic look because I wanted to do something smaller and better, than try to create beautiful art and failing at it.

For the description, I most certainly will work on that. Since this is my first game I have here, I wasn't sure how to create pages and other stuff, so I wanted to be detailed and clear about the game. But I will take your suggestions to heart and be a little more organized in the future.

Thank you all so much for commenting! Expect more frequent updates in the future!

Yep. That's exactly what she did. She wanted to start a new life, and that would begin with a new name.

I'm liking the game so far, but even on casual mode, I can't seem to get by the demon that you fight in the cave.

I'm glad you're enjoying it! As for the boss, make sure Arya is well stocked on Candy. There are a couple of spots in the previous room where you can get some. Heal her up, then challenge the boss. Remember to use her Superguard skill often, as it negates all damage that turn. Alex's secret weapon does pierce damage, which the boss is also weak against. Hope that helps!

I'm a little late to the party, but the latest blog is under the What's Written section of the front page!
I took forever posting because I wasn't sure how to react to this without being too self-indulgent, so I'm just posting here.

I don't know who put that blog on the front page, but thank you!

I saw! :D Congrats!
I'm stuck after I beat the first boss. I don't know where to go. There's a room to the right that takes me to a room that has a save point and nothing else. There's a passage but when I enter Alex says: "That's where I came from. When we're done here, we can go back that way". So what do I do? I'll give you my thoughts of the game after I finish the demo.

I'd simply like to see Arya not die in her first fight. I was able to do this with Throw Stone Rocks, but it seemed oddly wrong to do that. Though, buying Candy from the merchant before getting to that dungeon was probably a lot more important than I thought!

I... probably should have saved that comment for when I was ready to post the rest of my feedback, huh?

Yeah, this game is pretty hardcore with the survivalist mindset; you really feel like weak, helpless children in that first fight.

Go up. There's a big gap that you can walk through. It'll warn you that there's no turning back and ask if you're ready.

No, it's not wrong to throw rocks. That's exactly what you are supposed to do with her.
Ayra wasn't meant to be an attacker. Keep defending with her to save up stamina to use her Superguard Drive. Don't have that? That means you didn't find the Plank equipment for her. There's one right after you fall down the cliff with Alex, and another right before you fall down alone in the Forbidden Ruins.

Ready, I'll leave you some notes:

- The story is the best aspect of the game so far. It keeps you interested, the dialogue is effective and has a great rhythm. The demo leaves you wanting more and has a lot of potential. The characters are nothing special but all we saw was a childhood arc, so it's okay. It's what you would expect from some kids. Judging by the talent you have for the dialogue I expect great characters. They are quite memorable though.

- I think there's no need to say it but I will say it eitherway. The mapping is plain and boring. It lacks details, it's very simple, it feels empty, some parts are repetitive and, since it's RTP, we have seen this many times. I have nothing against RTP if it's well implemented but this game simply doesn't.
However you at least use diferent lighting effects, many games that fail in the visual aspect don't play too much with that. It's something.

- I like the multiple choices you have and the fact that it's for really relevant things in the game. It's not just "find an old man, kill him or not?". Your choice decides really important matters for the main plot. I didn't play it twice to see what changes depending on the answer chosen but I definitely want to. I hope it doesn't have the "Mass Effect 3 syndrome" and our choices matter. I guess the result in the end will be the same though.

- Hidden items are cool when you can guess there might be something or at least you are curious to see what's in a certain place. But when items are hidden and there's nothing that shows you that there's something there it's bad. I'm not talking about the special weapons or armours I'm talking about the items. The rocks and most of the candy is impossible to find unless you interact with every single tile in the screen. Candy is easier to find I guess but rocks are a pain in the ass. They could be anywhere. There should be at least a tiny little light to show that there's something there. I can't guess otherwise. Infact, if I hadn't read in one of your advices about the existance of the rock item I wouldn't even had realised that there was an item called rock. Maybe I don't pay attention I don't know.

- Great music, it fits the game so well and it makes me want to steal it(hehe).

- The combat, oh boy. I get that the point was to make us feel weak and useless like children. That's okay. I think this will improve a lot in the adulthood arc. Otherwise the game will fail hard on this.
I'll make some sub-points to cover combat:

-- Arya is too weak. I know she's meant to be weak but until you get rocks she literally can't do anything outside of guarding. She's like a bad tank. You went overboard I think.
-- While rats are okay bats are completely overpowered. Rats hit by 5-10 points and bats from 15-25. And they heal for that amount too! And they have more hp than the rats. If you fight a bat without items you either die or you are lucky and almost die.
-- Rocks and Candy are extremely useful and make Arya a great fighter, even better than the brother. The little problem is that you forgot to mention that we can equip those. I had no idea. It was a luck that I found out that. You should give us a tutorial or something.
-- The first boss is too much. If you don't have rocks and candy don't even try. Arya can't even survive against the boss until Alex arrives unless she uses candy. It's a bit frustrating that the game tells me "guard every turn until Alex arrives" I do that and get killed before he arrives. Should have said "guard and heal up with candy" or something like that.
-- Is it just me or enemies follow you until oblivion? 'Cause sometimes I wanted to flee from an insane bat and was chased like 30 tiles. Maybe I'm exaggerating a bit but that's how it felt.
-- Why does the basic attack consume mp? I know it's supposed to be stamina and the kids get tired but at least give more stamina. The fact that I kill 2 rats and I'm almost out of stamina it's ridiculous. Besides, the idea of limiting the amount of basic attacks(something that is known in RPGs because it's illimited) it's just plain bad. In my opinion at least. Attacking a few turns and forcing me to guard to recover stamina is boring and unnecessary.
-- I found a place where you could recover HP but lose stamina. That made me rage because I was almost full HP and cost me a lot of stamina. You could have warned me at least what was going to happen. I know Arya said "this water doesn't look tasty" or something like that but that doesn't warn me about the effects it will have in the gameplay.

I think I said everything I wanted to. Even though I complained a lot I really enjoyed the demo. The strong points of the game are the interesting and well developed story, the great dialogue and the music. The mapping and the combat needs to improve a lot. Especially the battle. The only reason I put up with it is because I wanted to know what was going to happen. You managed to make me care about what would happen to the kids.

I think the game will get even better in the adult arc. I will be supporting you. Good luck man ^^

I knew this was coming. I have all the aesthetic sense of a monkey, and for a game that could benefit with good map design, that is bad. But I've been working hard on that for the Adult Arc, so hopefully there will be better maps.

Items were supposed to be hard to find. I tried to make certain tiles stand out. That was sorta the purpose of barebones maps, so you would be drawn to irregularities and find items. I wanted to avoid lights because I wanted the player to feel proud that they found something, rather than paint a big sign that said, "LOOK HERE!" Though I guess I overdid it, huh?

Yes. It most certainly will get easier in the Adult Arc. Not less challenging, but the characters will all be able to do more than just guard.

If Alex used his Drive that he acquired from his extra weapons, that should have prevented the bats from draining HP. But I probably should lessen the health on the bats.

On Casual mode, there was an explanation of equipping and how that worked. For Survivor mode, I wanted to have as little hand-holding as possible to the player, so that they don't feel like babies. But I guess there is a difference between hand-holding and not explaining how to actually play the game. Alright, that's something I'll fix.

Oh boy, I knew this was going to be a topic of (heated)discussion later, and I was dumb to not warn players ahead of time. I guess now's a good time to explain myself as any:

I wanted stamina to deplete because I wanted the player to learn to pace himself (Or herself). I wanted the player to learn that blowing all the kid's stamina to fight every battle was wasteful. I wanted to challenge conventional means of RPG playing and forcing the player to pick their battles, and run away more often than one would in other RPGs. I also wanted the SP cost to encourage the player to use more items, as that doesn't cost any stamina at all. Also, many enemies in the Adult Arc have special skills that require a turn to charge, so the player could use that charge time to put up their guard, to regain some stamina as well as reduce incoming damage. To emphasize my point, I should probably have some of those skills in the Childhood Arc.

Guarding was meant to be more of a strategical choice than a chore. I have some ideas on how to fix this, though.

I hope you didn't rage too hard. There was a spring after Arya got separated that fully heals her Stamina on Survivor, and all HP and SP on Casual.

Alright. I've got a good handle on what didn't work for the battle system. Considering how relatively old this demo is in internet terms, perhaps a patch for the Childhood Arc would do very little to help out those that have tried and gave up on the game. But I do want to fix these issues soon, so I'll probably patch it anyways. I'm glad you enjoyed it, man! And you're right, it will be so much better in the Adult Arc.

What would you think about a walkthrough. For those that are really troubled by this game, I would be glad to make a walkthrough for you all to highlight all the items and stuff that could be missed. Is that something you (and anyone else reading this) would like to have?
Thanks for playing!

Progress is going... eh. The reason why is, about 3 days ago, I may have gotten a concussion. When I was at my job, the back of my head got double-tapped by the sharp corner of a table (I'll let your imaginations run wild with that one.)

What does that have to do with this? Well, every time I sit down to write a scene, my brain just gets scrambled. Normally I'm sharp as a knife when it comes to writing (I mean that I am focused. I'm not trying to say my writing is awesome because that would be arrogant.), but when I sit down to work, my mind just fizzles out. I've been working on updating the art and battle scenes, but that won't do anything is there's no scene to play out those battles, etc.

The point of this post is that I may or may not have it ready on March 20th when I said I would. I'll still try to shoot for it, but don't be surprised when the 20th comes around and I don't have it ready. Sorry in advance!
