The rope winds from the clouds like the long-dried trail of a giant's tear. It whips in the arid wind, down the birdless sky, and into the open mouth of the ravine that splits the dead land. Down and down it goes, the sky darkening to a pinpoint of light above it. This is the sky that Ivy knows.

Ivy and her sister, Mint, peer further into the ravine. It has been one day since their father stopped moving. A dandelion sprouts from the parched earth like hands clasped together in prayer. It is the only living thing they've seen in this dead world. A growl echoes off the cliff walls. Maybe not the only thing.

Sometimes Ivy dreams of a sky that covers everything. When she awakes, she hates herself for still having the dreams of a child. She's fourteen, now, her sister twelve. The rope stretches up above them, up, up, up, further than young eyes can see.

Major Update

I've been hinting here and there about wanting to update A Very Long Rope, and I finally got off my ass and did it. I made quite a few changes, and I'll list them below, but I want to talk about the most major one in depth. When I made A Very Long Rope, my goal was to make a game with a strong story, and a lot of the other aspects got brushed aside. This was going to be my way to segue into the community and hopefully find some other people interested in working together. Since then, I've shifted my perspective and focused more on things like design and aesthetics, which this game doesn't really care much about, unfortunately.

So, the update. The chief annoyance I've been hearing about A Very Long Rope is the dungeon design--mainly, levels are way too big, and the random encounters serve to make things worse. So, this update adds an item to your inventory that toggles enemy encounters. This item was available in the game before, but the only way to get it was to beat the game (players who have done this know I'm talking about the saecelium shield). Now, this item is given to the player at the very beginning, meaning you don't have to fight a single random encounter anymore.

Of course, since bosses exist, you'll still need to gain experience. In order to incentivize getting a good amount of experience before each boss, I've made several treasure chests need a currency called "victory points" in order to open them. Basically, you get a single victory point for every enemy you defeat in a battle (other than bosses). Victory points are dependent based on the dungeon, so the ones you earn in the first dungeon will only work in that dungeon. The cost of opening chests is higher depending on what's inside the chest, so you might need to spend between 2-6 points in order to open each of these special chests.

I've also doubled the experience, gold, and item drops from monsters. The net effect here is that if you open every single locked chest, you'll end up fighting about half of the encounters that you would have if you just left random encounters on. I did a full playthrough and felt that these locked chests provided short-term goals that kept me more interested while exploring; I hope they do that for you, too!

Here's the full list of changes:

-Reduced crit damage from triple to double
-Stat cap increased to 9999 (will mainly affect buff stacking)
-Berserk no longer sucks
-One-touch Sprint
-First agricultural upgrade requires three people instead of five.
-Escape rate now a flat 60%
-Added a way to get out of the Goddess Tower if you don't have a portable transceiver
-Fixed a few typos/graphical glitches/small things I don't remember
-Rare drop rates have been increased significantly
-Gold/XP/Drop Rates doubled
-Findable equipment that could be used in recipes is now sold as recipes in your town along with the regular recipes.
-Saecelium Shield now added at the beginning of the game. Players can use their old data and find a Saeclium Shield in a number of places within a blue chest (such as the entrance to your town, on the world map, or next to the save point in Old Town); the blue chests will disappear upon opening one.
-Most chests are now "locked." Gain Victory Points from defeating random mobs in a dungeon to open locked chests. Victory Points are specific to each dungeon.
-Locked chests are weighted based on how good the item is. 2 VP is a potion, 3 VP is gold, a good potion, or monster mats, 4 VP are great potions and large sums of gold, 5 VP are stat-boosting items or rare monster mats, 6 VP are equipment.
-Chests that aren't near easy grinding spots (e.g. chests in certain puzzles, chests in towns) will never be locked. Several other random chests in dungeons will also not be locked.
-Arena fights now give experience
-Can now use saecelium shield during soul tear scenes
-Only need to find the wolf four times instead of nine (what was I thinking?!) in Marina's soul tear scene.

That's it! Oh, and make sure to subscribe to my new project: Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass.

That took me forever! Wish I could give specific advice but I don't quite remember how I did it. All I can say is "try everything."
I'm pretty sure it has something to do with getting the block on leif's end in the middle so you can push it in any direction while Ivy's is near those statues, but I can't figure it out for beans! x.x

THANK YOU! TvT This puzzle most certainly did create quite a roadblock! :P
No prob! I wanted to put a big fat trial there because the reward you get after completing it is pretty SWEET.
Ok I finished the game, and have to say was probably 1 of the hardest rpgs i've played, but thoroughly enjoyed it.I'm not one to replay games normally but went back to tie up a few loose ends. I still missed a few thngs I cant work out though ......
1. I collected and played 12 soul tears but think there must be another 4 maybe 5
somewhere, they are obviously for completing quests so I know 1 I missed, which is I never found a Chimera for the girl in the cabin.
2 I found 43 people for the town of Sanctuary but have 1 empty residence and 1 empty mansion, also could not find enough farmers to open the new area there(I was 2 short)
3. Only found 4 rare crystals for Rochfort.
4. Could not find N,E, and W keys for town Solomons Furrow.
5 still have Sylvia with me but don't know if its possible to get back from where her husband is, if she has a tear.
I also found a character I could not work out if he was recruitable, namely :-Spitz, and Julian
I got all 4 characters to lvl 74, and my veiw of the game is that its very good, but also VERY challenging with some of the puzzles and also not having many clues as to where to go,sometimes. All in all I give it 9/10 well done and thanks Kasey (Housekeping)
Glad you enjoyed it! Some of your questions are going to be hard to answer without some more information, but I'll do my best:

1. The Chimera was the first boss in the game, so if you go back there, you can fight a tougher version of him (you'll destroy him at this point in the game, haha). More specifically, he's in the cave by Ivy's house; go up at the fork instead of left into the mine. I don't know what other soul tears you're missing, so you'll probably need to give me some specifics, but people tend to miss Cyril's (you can find his soul tear to the north of Alluvia--follow the edge of the continent), Brunhilde's (you have to beat her husband's fourth challenge course), and maybe Lucas's (he's in Mossvine--people tend to forget to see him after they do Nox's trial).
2. One of the two farmers you're missing is Marina, who you can get after you do her soul tear. I'm not sure who else you're missing--have you gotten Clovis and Seamus?
3. There are a lot of rare crystals out there. I'll give a list after this spoiler so more people will see it.
4. One key is in Avishun dungeon (check the pile of bones). You can get it earlier if you fight Lorenzo before you see Rose when you're children. You get one key for beating the fire arena in Terranoire (it's not a listed prize, but a boss drops it). The final key is in a tower in the Ruins of Old Avishun (your "old key" will open that door).
5. You can teleport back to Ubiquity at any time from your town.
6. If a character has a face portrait, they're recruitable. Julian and Spitz can be recruited after you get your third agricultural area.

Here's a list of the rare crystal locations for those who are interested (I wouldn't look at this until after you've beaten the game--don't look if you don't want spoilers):
1. Talk with Solomon after either getting Sylvia or deactivating her--you may have to ask him about the "other" Sylvia.
2. Under the bridge at the beginning of the abandoned station on Logos-3.
3. In the saecelium mines, after heading to the end of the "four lever" mine cart puzzle, walk back onto the tracks.
4. Beat Rank B of the expert arena in Terranoire. To gain access to the expert arena, you have to beat all the other arenas and make it to Ubiquity.
5. Beat Rank A of the Quiz Bowl in the Pig Arena in Alluvia.
6. Hop off the right area at the top of the Tower of the Mother in the Temple of the Elder Gods. To unlock that area, you have to complete every Reflecting Pond scene.
7. In the basement of Nightmare Castle. To get Nightmare Castle, you have to recruit Brunhilde, and to unlock the basement, you have to finish all of the Nightmare Dimension challenges at Phobos in Silver Spring.
8. Beat the second Nightmare Dimension course.
9. In the Ruins of Old Avishun, head north from C-Lock, then head down the staircase. Push the chifferobe to the right and go into the secret room.
10. Let Gretchen dig up the park twice. The second measure for this will appear in the town hall after visiting Ubiquity.
11. Follow the directions to Treasure Map 5 in the snow field.
12. Walker will give you one after tracking him down. I'll put Walker's locations in the next spoiler...

Here's Walker's locations:
-Snowfield (follow Odd Thing Map 3).
-Blocked entrance to the mine on the surface.
-Entrance to Attis (the village on Logos-3).
-Inside the lake temple on Avishun--he's in the area with the cultist who can talk (not Mag).
-Beside the teleporter in Solomon's Furrow.
-In your town.
thanks I will go and try a few of those I reckon, till I find a new rpg to play
I just started this, looks interesting. (Those VX RTP tiles, though. Ick.)

Are Mint and Ivy based on Katniss and Primrose from The Hunger Games by any chance? They remind me of them a lot.
No, they're not based on those characters. I'm actually one of the five people on the planet who hasn't read/seen The Hunger Games, but the strong older sibling and weaker younger sibling is something that comes up a lot in media, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were some similarities.
I'm playing through this right now. It's incredibly good so far. I'm having trouble with the darkness puzzle in Path of the Gods; I know it's optional, but I want those chests, dammit! :)

Anyway, that's not why I'm commenting here; I don't know if you can do anything about it, but running the game under Wine on either Mac OS X or Linux works fine except that the background music is completely gone. All the files are present, and I can play them manually, but the game refuses to play any of your beautiful soundtrack; it just plays the short SFX.
Well, I'm a white bread Windows kind of guy, so I don't know if I can help there. I would think that the issue might have something to do with MIDI playback, though, since the music is all MIDI whereas sound effects are .ogg. This is just from a quick Google search, so I don't know if this will help or not:

http://wiki.winehq.org/MIDI

Hope you get it working!
Thanks! I seem to have found a candidate for the problem:
author=Wine Wiki
DirectMusic support is incomplete in Wine. Several apps have been reported to work fine with native versions of the 5 dlls that belong to DirectMusic.

Unfortunately, I've already tried replacing the DLLs in question, so I know that doesn't work in this case. :(

Regardless, sorry to bother you!
Sorry I couldn't be more help. If you really want to listen to the music, though, if you cover air fair and pay a reasonable service fee, I will stand behind you and hum the tracks as you play.

Really? All the way to California? :D

In all seriousness, though, this kind of response, even when made in jest, is what makes us all love you, Housekeeping. :)
Housekeeping,
Spoiler Alert!
Why Mint have to die?
