Highschool of the Dead + Pokemon = AWESOME

I've never felt attracted by the zombie genre. Movies, games, doesn't matter, I find a boring and repetitive genre that has been seen a hell of times and has nothing new to offer. The only exception being the one of the title of this review. And I think I found the second excepetion.
Pokemon Dusk is a great game, with a really fun gameplay, great storyline with quite memorable characters, fantastic music, it just does it all great.

Before reading you must know that I'm not a native english speaker so I apologise for any possible mistake you might find.

Story

Let's start by the story. The main character of this story is Ethan, a pokemon trainer travelling all over Johto in order to beat all the gyms and become a Pokemon Master. It's pretty much the story of the original Pokemon games, Pokemon Gold/Silver until Ethan gets to Goldenrod City. You know, that city in the original game that had the radio tower, the train station, the giant mall, and had fucking whitney with her fucking miltank.

When Ethan gets there he finds out that the pokemon center is closed and the town is uninhabited. Then, a zombie girl attacks our Hero with no chance to react(actually he had the chance, he was just stupid). Luckily, Ethan is saved by a young man called Dave, who shot the zombie with his gun. This is the first impact the game has to offer since you have all the old cute and charming pokemon graphics from a game from the previous century and all of a sudden a girl gets shot, the games gets way darker, there's 8 bit blood, and we are talking about death, pain, fear, you know, basic stuff.

After Ethan is saved by Dave, he passes out and wakes up in a haven. Now, he's forced to forget about his dreams, and live in a world where he's constantly fighting to survive. Especially because Etahn is the only one who has the pokemon and is the only in condition to fight against the zombies. Also, he's the main character so it's predictable that he's going to be the one who does everything.

Never forget that brave zombie bellsprout. Never forget him.

In a city like Goldenrod City you can imagine how much potental it has to offer. And takes advantage of that. The idea of showing survivors in an apocalyptic world isn't anything fresh or new but it's well implemented.

Maybe because, unlike many other similar stories, the characters a well developed. They are interested, they have their own personality that differs them from the rest, they have their own story(even if it's very short). You care about the characters because the game gives you reasons to care. When a character is angry you can see and feel him angry. When he's repentant you notice he's genuinely repentant.

Also, the rhythm of the game is perfect. It's neither too rushed nor too slow.
You are always wondering what's going to happen next and you always want to know some answers. And since pokemon has such a big world it makes wonder what's happening in other parts of the world while we are trapped in this city. It really leaves it open to make a sequel because the pokemon setting can afford that. And even with that, there are things that were not detailed yet and leaves it open for a sequel.

It's a great and memorable story mixed in a pokemon world which makes it feel way more unique than it actually is. It's not a master piece or anything but It just does things in a right way.

Even team rocket makes an appearance.

Visuals and Audio

Well, how much can you say about the game when it comes to the visual aspect? It's nothing that new really. The graphics are the same of the original Pokemon Gold/Silver, so in the end it's the same shit, right? Actually no, the game manages to make it look completely different. Sure, the graphics are the same, so the sprites, but the atmosphere it's completely different. It's dark, it's surpisingly violent, it leaves a claustrophobic feeling and(somehow) completely adapts to the charming pokemon graphics.

It's strange to play a pokemon game with such violent graphics and audio. Blood, screams, bodies all over the place, it really is an apocalyptic world in the pokemon setting. I've never tried to do it myself but I doubt that's as easy to make as it looks.

Yup, it's hilarious.

Also, the music is great too. It perfectly synchronizes to what's happening and helps to make the game way more Survival Horror. Also, it's hilarious because it mixes really violent and terrifying tracks with the old and classic pokemon music we are all accustomed to. For example, there's a scene when we fight with Whitney's Miltank. Instead of all the dark and horror songs we had been hearing until then, for the boss fight we hear the classic pokemon battle song.
Obviously, most of the scenes uses survival horror themes according to the scene.

No...NO!...You just don't use "Not Tomorrow" in a pokemon Game. You can't do that! *snif

Gameplay

Pokemon, that classic Role playing game. You catch pokemon, train them, fight turn based battles, pokemon centers and shops, towns and...what? Oh, forget about all that. Here is just you and a monster desesperated to kill you. Forget about every rule pokemon had. You can't rely on that in this world.

Instead of having the classic pokemon combat, Pokemon Dusk opts for an action game. Ethan has only one pokemon, Quilava. And that's all you have. You can heal your pokemon a limited amount of times so you need to be extremely careful and thrifty. Nurse Joy is one of the survivors but due to the low amount of supplies she can only restore Quilava's health 5 times in the entire game. You do have some potions and berries but if you can't beat the game with that well...you basically lost and have to restart the game. I actually find that really interesting and challenging, especially at the beggining when you are getting used to the fighting mechanics.

The fighting is pretty simple. Quilava can use two attacks. Scrath and ember. Scratch is a realtively good attack that forces enemies to move back but you have to be extremely precise to hit them and(since it's a melee attack) if you miss you will take damage almost 100% sure. Ember is a range fire attack, and it's the attack you use 80% of the time. It is simple but incredibly addicting. You can find other ways to fight them as well. Since zombies are pretty stupid, you can always trick them or dodge them depending on the scenario.

However these are not the classic slow zombies from Plants VS Zombies, noooo, there are pokemon zombies as well. And that means they can use different attack as well. That's such a cool idea, since there are so many different pokemon you can have so many different zombies to fight with and you never know what's coming so you gotta be ready for anything. And the game offers plenty of variety for the pokemon zombies. There's grass pokemon who throw leaves, there's poisonous pokemon who can well, poison you, there are even pokemon who roll(increasing their movement speed a LOT) and many more.

It doesn't matter what pokemon game is it, Miltank is always a detestable opponent.

Speaking of Miltank, I found a bug. When miltank starts rolling you can just open up the menu. The game pauses so Miltank stops moving, however after a few seconds she stops rolling as well. Which means that you can open the menu every time Miltank attacks, wait until she doesn't roll anymore, and hit her. It's cheating but since I freaking hate Miltank I don't feel bad about it.

So, to sum up the gameplay mechanics are great. It's simple but it's incredibly fun and addictive to play and since there's so much variety and some awesome boss battles(Miltank isn't that list) you don't get bored of it.

Conclusion

In conclusion this is a great game. I absolutely love it and it's highly replayable, since it has three different ending, so I'm going for it. It is infact one of my favourite RPG Maker games even though I like the RPG genre more than the Action genre. I still highly recommend it to anyone who likes Pokemon or Survival Horrors. And if you like both (like me) this is a must.
My most sincere congratulations.

What pokemon is that by the way? Seriously, da fuck is it?

Why not? If you didn't like the game that's your opinion.

It's not the game, it's the review. It's full of grammatical/spelling errors and is kind of lacking a professional tone. Take this sentence, for instance:
You know, that city in the original game that had the radio tower, the train station, the giant mall, and had fucking whitney with her fucking miltank.

You need to capitalize names. You did it with Ethan, so why not Whitney and Miltank? Also I generally disapprove of coarse words in reviews, because again, it sounds unprofessional and it adds nothing to this review.

I know English isn't your second language, but you still could have done better in polishing this review.

I thought it was decent enough. There are pros and cons and I think he gets his point across.
It's abit sloppy but no worse than some reviews out there where the reviewer is a native english speaker.

I do agree though, cursing wasn't needed.

I guess you are right, I did commit some spelling mistakes and cursing was unnecessary but I honestly wrote this the best I could. I coulnd't have polished this review better because my english knowledge is limited.
I apologise if you felt offended.
