My mind is whirling

I'm been doing some brainstoming on how to make skills more unique.

On Okiku's end, I think she's going to retain Ray, First Aid, and Concentration. I still want her to have two STR-based skills, and I'm figuring one can be a stun-skill whose duration improve over it's evolutions. The other could be a skill-sealer whose duration also improve over it's evolutions.

For her last ability, I'm considering a debuff that reduces more stats as it evolves. I'm thinking duration might actually REDUCE over the skill's evolutions, to balance things out.

With creatures, I have to be careful. The fact that players only ever have Okiku in the party means that actions that prevent action altogether are no-nos.

However, since DON'T ACT can't be a thing, we can still play with conditions that can be removed via item use.

Such as skill-sealing, and poison. Maybe "MP posion"? Perhaps enemies can debuff Okiku?

I don't want to get too overboard, though. This is supposed to be a light-hearted game, and frustrations should really be kept to a minimum.

Call me crazy, but I want SOME skill Okiku has to do damage to MP.

Though, that might be a tad redundant if a skill already has "Mute", or similar effect on it.

I know I can't do both on one skill. Well, maybe I could, but it would make more sense for it to be a "spell" rather than a "technique".

I suppose I could get rid of the straight-up damage that is Ray, and it's evolutions, but, I dunno. That doesn't seem right at all!

Maybe I should just go with the plan I had before, in respect to Okiku?

I'm slowly beginning to realize that I probably have to re-do monsters to make whatever abilities I'm going to give players worth the player's while to actually use.

There has GOT to be a better solution than making everything a virtual boss fight! I just haven't come up with it yet.

Nessessary reference

I still need to do tests on maps that are not Ryoko's Lab, but, I think we might, just might...

...have the kind of Wand of Blasting I was looking for from the beginning!

*Edit:
Awwwww Yeaaaaaah!

Er, I mean...

...that's one problem down! Now...

...about these critters.

I'm not totally sure these skills on either side of the table are balanced yet. However...

...I'm going to go ahead and make the next dungeon anyway.

Oh. Right. That means new creatures. I knew that.

I think I'm about ready to playtest this beast!

I have a few lingering misgivings, though, that I will share.

First off, I don't like the speed at which these skills evolve. It seems a bit too fast for the game's own good. This is fairly easily alterable, so I'll wait to see what kind of feedback (if any) I get on that when I make a new demo release. I'm also REALLY unsure about Okiku having Leak (an MP attack that drains MP over time), and it's evolutions. It doesn't seem terribly useful for anything outside boss fights. I suppose I could replace it with Ray, but it seems to me that players would only use Ray, First Aid, and Concentration, maybe the debuff (Apprehension) for bosses, and not mess with the techniques because, well, Okiku's STR is crap.

I dunno. I've been surprised by reading posts about people using status abilities in other games I've made. Games where they exist, but I never used them in my own playtestings (duh-urrrrrrp?).

Bah! I'm probably worrying too much again! We'll just see how this comes out!

How long was this game planning to be? If it's a short game, like 3-4 hours, then I think the evolution progress is just fine.
And I think Leak is pointless as long as you still have Concentration. However, if enemies have skills that use MP, then Leak becomes VERY useful.

It's the Pokemon syndrome. Why would you ever use status-inflicting moves when you can just do damage and kill enemies sooner? Whether or not you want them here is up to you, though.

Total game-time is probably not going to be over the five-hour mark. Four hours might be about right.

The thing that quirks my eyebrow is how fast skills are learned in relation to how fast Okiku levels-up!

I'm used to handing out skills at fairly regular intervals. Usually, this interval is ten, but there are a few exceptions to this. Though, there is also the point that the "levels" I'm setting these monsters at are on the low side.

So, maybe it'll balance out anyway? That would be pretty cool!

Uh, I think you might be a bit confused about how Leak functions! Anyway...

...I confess that the orcs and trolls on the mountain pass don't use skills at all. Mute and Leak aren't going to do a heck of a lot to 'em.

However, pretty much every other enemy will use skills. So Leak's MP damage and "MP poison" should be effective against them!
